Sweet Anita is one of the UK’s biggest Twitch streamers with 1.9m followers. Anita has Tourette’s syndrome but wasn’t diagnosed until she was 27 years old, after repeatedly being ignored by doctors and family. Anita describes the impact that Tourette’s has had on her life and tells us about the darker side of her online fame.
Extraordinary Lives is a podcast from the team behind LADbible’s Minutes With.
We speak to remarkable people who each have a unique story to tell - spies, terrorists, hackers, gangsters, killers, people with particular conditions, and those who’ve lived unreal experiences. These are the stories that resonated the most with LADbible’s audience when they were originally told on Minutes With.
In this podcast, LADbible’s Ben Powell-Jones sits down with those individuals for a more in-depth conversation, revealing untold tales for the first time.

Hi 👋 I really liked listening to this pod, as you’ll expressed in the end, how great, and amazing Anita is, I really agree with you. I saw the first interview with her here on @LADbibleTV (feels like a long time ago) and I enjoyed this format (not necessarily more) but it went deeper, I guess it was the interaction between the interviewer and the interviewee that made this one so much more interesting, rather than “only” listening to a story being told. (Hopes that makes sense) English isn’t my first language so I apologize in advance for misspellings/grammar mistakes. With kindness and respect to all of you and if possible please tell Anita how much I appreciated her being so forthcoming, and for not only sharing, but really explaining “it all” = the bad, the good, the ugly and everything in between. /GraceG 🩰 #LADbibleTV

Yeah, and Terrence didn't interrupt the interview all the time too, telling everyone her dick is on fire... I don't know if this is correct, but it really seems like she's using CBD oil (or THC itself) to manage her condition ever since she was in the Netherlands and experimented with weed; still love her though with or without the ticks.. even when she threatens to fist my kitten.. whatever she's doing, she's awesome and deserves all our love..

Please can you tell me what that song she is whistling at the beginning is from. I saw it in a movie I watched about 15 years ago now. The song pops into my head every once in a while but I can't remember what damn movie its from. I didn't want to watch the entire video because, well an hour is just a bit much for me and I don't know the exact time stamp of when she does it in case she mentions it. Please let me know if you know it.

@@rusty1748 excuse me? Are you telling me that my experience of having hiccups daily since middle school is not valid or the fact that all the doctors I saw over the years only looked at my hiccups and not the fact that they got worse with my anxiety attacks which meant that they are tics and not hiccups? I’m confused about what you are referring to? Do you know me? If you do then you know that I have hiccups that get extremely annoying and If you don’t know me then why do you feel uncomfortable with my story so much that you need to say something about it? @@rusty1748 you are 💯 correct that anything I share online is about me…. Unless it’s about my kids. I’m an advocate for mental health issues in our Behavioral health kids in Washington state. I’m diagnosed with autism, ADHD, PTSD, BPD, Tourette’s, depression and anxiety. My kids have Autism, PTSD, ADHD, depression and anxiety. By sharing out stories we are actively helping change the stigma about mental health issues. It doesn’t always make it all about being in the center of attention but more about letting people step away from the discomfort that comes with obvious signs of being different. Women my age were overlooked by the health system during our childhood. We did not get the support that came from a diagnosis of ADHD, Autism and Tourette’s. It doesn’t matter if you don’t believe a stranger online but it’s worrying that people sharing a part of their story of Tourette’s on a video about the difficulties getting diagnosed with Tourette’s makes you feel the need to force that stranger back into the shadows where people get forgotten about in the light of society. I have a late diagnosis for Tourette’s…… so please have a good day and enjoy your need to be righteous….

She is possibly the most interesting person I have ever heard speaking to an online audience- but I don’t actually understand why she didn’t keep her craft-supplies business running or pass it on to someone else? And there is such a difference between her British attitude of ‘fuck off if you can’t be nice’ to the new-American ultra-sensitivity that just makes people so much more susceptible to toxic and predatory behaviour...

when streamers foster Para social relationships via twitch chat with viewers it can become dangerous, especially female streamers because theres a lot of mentally unstable people out there. when people donate multiple times a stream just for the streamer to read out their message it can become very warped. Anita isnt like a lot of the other female streamers that thirst trap guys for money which is why this situation is even worse.

I absolutely love her as a person. Watching this video and just watching her speak really puts a lot of things to perspective as well and helps you understand how so many things happen the way they do and why. I have ADHD so while I don't fully understand what she's going through, I partially do and lots of things were kind of relatable. I honestly truly hope for her to get all the good things in life from here on. I love how analytical and open-minded and well spoken she is, her speaking about her life experiences and how she was basically self taught to some extent, somehow, really helps me with getting motivated to do things, which motivation is difficult to get for me so very helpful lol.

Anita is so well spoken and like Ben said, has such a way of explaining things to make it accessible and understandable. My 13 year old son immediately knew who she was - "That's Sweet Anita! She's so cool. She has Tourette's which causes her to say things she doesn't want to. But man, that's okay, because she is cool." Which opened a nice conversation between him and I about Tourette syndrome and what he has learned.

Obviously, you have a great sense of humor, but there is a wonderfully introspective and serious side to you as well. Insightful is probably a better description. Your willingness to discuss TS coupled with your scientific knowledge is fascinating. That said, given your life journey, I think you’d would be an awesome motivational speaker. It is an absolute testament to the quality of your soul that you seem to genuinely like and care for people in spite of the way you were treated in your youth.

WoW!! TY so much Sweet Anita for doing this!! I also have Tourrete's and am also a streamer. I have known of you and watched you for awhile and you really helped me in so many ways feel more comfortable about streaming! It is definitely still a challenge for me, especially when my tics are really bad, but I have learned that being honest with the chat and embracing it instead of hiding it has been the best thing for me! I am still trying to come back to Twitch, after taking a long break, but watching this has inspired me to try harder and keep going! For most of my life I self medicated with drugs to try and hide it, and other mental health related issues, but I have been clean for over 8 years now, and in that time I have opened up about my Tourretes and my addiction, and often talk about it on stream. Love what you do and thank you so much for speaking about it and being so open. You have made it easier for me to talk about and be open about it, and I also decided to go back and see a neurologist and you have a lot to do with that! TY!

I'm a female game developer - 3D Environment Artist, more precisely - graduated in Game Design and I know exactly what she means. Though I haven't experienced anything really weird as a professional, I had loads of it during college, it was wild! A programming professor told me to dropout because I couldn't code (I'm an artist), a male colleague told me I would be more successful if I showed my boobs on Twitch, I was followed by guys on corridors, stared at, receive odd Facebook messages... it was crazy. But the fun fact is, out of a class of 40, 5 were girls, all of them work on the industry right now, more than half of the boys dropped out and the ones that didn't, less than 10 of them got a job in the industry :)

This is so liberating hearing you explaining some of the things you've experienced. For instance, having personally difficult interactions with people, because they don't see your disability. Mine started out that way, and there were many times when I thought, life would be much easier if I didn't have a leg, or something along those lines. That way people can see my disability, and not make me feel like I was lying about my pain and disability-related problems. It's awesome that you're putting this out here like this, but I think you could really go talk to support groups, and really help other people with disabilities.. there are a lot of people that don't involve themselves in KZbin, or Twitch, or other related platforms. Just a thought.. I know you do a lot for people out here, who are dealing with their own disabilities..

She speaks the truth about developing earlier than others being an issue for girls. You get treated like a novel piece of meat or a circus attraction. It feels like nobody can see that there is a person behind the large chest. It is the main reason for getting a chest reduction as a teen - society is cruel enough we are willing to remove physical pieces of ourselves just to feel seen, heard and accepted beyond a characteristic of our appearance.

I can barely begin to imagine the dark phases one might go through during the times she described here as "processing", but I'm glad she seems to have found supportive people, communities, and resources. LADbible's interviews are some great work. Most of the ones I've seen could potentially be very sensational (like the title and clickbait thumbnail for this one), but turn out to be respectful, grounded, informative, and/or thought-provoking.

I was diagnosed with severe tourettes from age 2 till about 12. Somehow I have overcome it and I credit finding a good friend group and mainly skateboarding that saved me. I am 29 now and only deal with OCD. Very thankful and happy that I was able to overcome my tourettes. The power of the mind.

It’s not the power of the mind, it’s development. Tourette’s can become very limited in adulthood or people follow the Tourette’s to OCD developmental trajectory like you. Some people even have it come back later in life, but I hope that doesn’t happen to you.

I am sorry you had/have to deal with that :( I got stuck living with my rapey, abusive, cheating ex for about 4 years cause I literally could not afford to leave. He had me convinced I was a bad gf, no one else would want me, he's the only one who could e.v.e.r love me. It took a lot and about 3 more years to fully separate myself from him. He had 2 failed relationships after me, tried to get me to come back. I ended up just blocking him on all accounts cause he wouldn't leave me be. I have been in a relationship for 5 years now. It does get better. It just takes a lot of work.

It’s an absurd assertion that some places, “like America,” don’t have an awareness of Tourette’s Syndrome. Every high school class has a min. 1-2 kids with it. Our population is so much larger than the UK, so we mix with a much larger number of diverse conditions. When dealing with the airlines, you would fall under the protection of the “ Disabilities Act”, even if you’re not American, so long if you have documentation of your disability.

Anita is an absolute gift to the world! She has so much wisdom to share and articulates it so well. My favorite topic is when she talks about living life structured around ethics-based decision-making. If more people could adopt such a viewpoint, this world would be an such amazing place for everyone to live in.

Anita's a fascinating person. I discovered her through funny compilations of her ticks. It was entertaining so I looked up more. Along the way, there were clips of her just talking about various things, and that is where I really became interested in her content. I could (and have) listen to her share her world views and experiences for hours on end and never get bored. I have even adopted a few of her world views along the way, probably in a higher ratio than I have from anyone else I have come across. Thank you for having her on so even more people can discover this absolute gem of a person.

This gives us a whole lot of insight in regards to online communities that exist. People living with Tourette’s syndrome tend to push themselves to go past their limit, and sometimes it could result to them possibly spiraling out of control. I don’t mean this in a bad way at all, for me, it’s just the reality of things. Life can be unpredictable in ways you wouldn’t expect.

Man, her stalking stories are horrifying. At the beginning of the video I was like "Huh, maybe I ought to give Twitch a try...." as a mulling over thought. At the end of the video, no freakin' way. I really hate that these few bad apples completely change how one views society and how much more guarded it makes one become. I feel like it just takes away from the neutral/happy crowd that actually DOES enjoy watching her content as entertainment. I feel so sorry for any female Twitch streamers. That takes so much strength to even keep going on with streaming after just dealing with a few crazy people.
