I was 16 when I first played FFVII on the PS1 back when it first came out. There were NO warnings. No indicators. It was swift, sudden, and violent. I was so sad, and I was so angry. I hated Sephiroth in that moment. ... Then the game creators just dig it deeper by having you fight a boss while Aerith's music continues to play. Never and never afterwards have I ever fought a boss while crying. I vowed bloody retribution right then and there.

It's a shame this scene is spoiled everywhere now and it's pretty hard to not get spoil, I wasn't on the internet back then, so this was completly blind and discovering it make it much more impactfull and it's pretty brutal, also like the fact that after the boss fight there is no dialogue, just like the characters you can only deal with it and painfully accept it.

When I was a kid and I watched this scene for the first time, i was in tears bro. I knew for a fact that Aeris was partially my favorite girl and I wanted to ship her with Cloud. But then there was an important ship that my dad discovered and thats with Tifa. Aeris dying is like a real heart stab for reals. The fact that Aeris died like that was so dramatic that I felt Cloud's rage. Both my hands were on my mouth and i couldnt speak, like man what an entrance to this scene. I love how it trends to it though because I knew something bad was gonna happen when Cloud was looking at her knelt down like that, all vulnerable.

They're no longer bound to exactly what happened in the original, so while Aerith might survive this time around, we might lose one or more of the others.

This was the moment were fans were outrage and demanded to make a new version to keep Aerith back when it was released, at least in Japan I think. But like real life, the dead can't be brought back to life. Hironobu Sakaguchi's mom tragically died and he made this moment to remind players that important people in your life can suddenly be gone when you don't want them to.

Well that was the goal here for the devs. Few of the devs hate the idea of how someone sacrifice for the good of others or someone getting a power up from it. So the goals here was a genuine death, where the player would feel an actual loss.

I was so heartbroken I didn't pick it up again for months and even then I just wanted to finish it so I could get over it. Even now, after 15 years this scene still hurts like hell. I'd say that there's a more iconic and impactful death scene in video games. The death of Crono from Chrono Trigger. To me it's more meaningful because you play as him and the game kills off someone who isn't just A main character, but THE main character

Im 37, and ive been an avid gamer most of my life. When I played on ff7 on my ps back in my teens, this scene truly shocked me to the core. Games weren't like this back then. This scene really hit deep. Dark unbridled violence on such sweet innocence and purity. And right when cloud finally found aerith too. Was totally unexpected I cried like a bitch lol

I think it would be pretty messed up if Aerith’s death scene went like this in the remake: Sephiroth uses Hell’s Gate like usual but Aerith dodges the attack and lives. A fight begins between Sephiroth, Cloud, and Aerith. Sephiroth gets defeated but starts freaking out on the floor then it’s revealed that he was just an illusion and you actually fought JENOVA instead. The second Cloud realizes this he turns towards Aerith who is frozen with terror on her face as she ascends up being lifted into the air with Sephiroth’s sword through her and Sephiroth smirking saying something like “some fates cannot be saved Cloud.”I think that would be even more messed up.

Okay, the thing I hate about the editing here is that probably the most emotional moment of this whole scene is when Aerith's theme starts playing as the White Materia bounces down the stairs into the water. And it keeps cutting of just before her theme plays.

Seeing the PS1 version of this is just so sad. Even eye watering. Thinking about how this will look on the Remake is scary. I hope they have the option that allows you to skip without consequences. Kind of like they did on Modern Warfare. I don't think too many people can handle it.
