So glad I found this. I just started recording my switch game play. I have no desire to stream, and I got a Vivatar capture card similar to the budget card you showed, and OSB software. Playing Sniper Elite 4, the recorded video looks incredible, couldn't be happier. However, there are times I experienced the delay you speak of. It is not really bad, what it causes is me to run into things as I try to turn a corner, or slightly miss a ladder I am trying to climb. It is enough to cause some frustration. I was going to bite the bullet and get an elgato, but seeing that I can use an hdmi splitter, that would give me the one advantage that the elgato would provide. lots of money saved. Thanks for a great video.

What’s the approximate millisecond lag for the cheaper capture card? I’d hate to think I’d be at a disadvantage against an opponent in a game like smash because I have delay from using a cheaper card versus an elgato
@TeeChu3 жыл бұрын
Even with Elgato / more expensive cards there's definite input lag, more so on the cheaper cards of course! Can't give an approximate on that but it's definitely there - Elgato more bearable but probably explains why I lose on Smash online matches when playing through OBS sometimes ;) For input heavy games I would recommend using an HDMI splitter for cheaper cards, so you can watch the gameplay directly on a TV or second monitor, whilst still capturing everything in OBS Cards like Elgato usually have an HDMI out so avoids the need for an HDMI splitter

Hey! If you see in the video, both cheaper and more expensive cards were used to record the Mario Kart and Smash bros footage - records straight onto PC though - so not sure about recording it onto a separate device then transferring it to a PC - your best bet is a PC, or if it’s a case of portability, then perhaps a laptop. when using a splitter is anyone having problems with not being able to capture audio even after setting up OBS audio input capture source?
@TeeChu2 жыл бұрын
Hmm - do you get any audio signal at all? and does it work without the splitter (e.g. just direct into the capture card?) One thing I noticed about splitters and audio/visual is that sometimes the splitter isn't getting enough power - usually resolved by making sure it's getting power through a USB cable (most splitters have optional USB power) Also - making sure your USB isn't overloaded on your PC - so you may need to try a different USB port (e.g. if you're using the front set of USB, maybe try the back)

Very helpful video as I've been thinking about several options regarding a capture card including the fact I have a friend looking for a great budget capture card for his streams. It's always nice to know there's more than affordable options out there that get the job done. I was going to ask your opinions on some capture cards since I have a bigger budget to work with and there's a lot of sales going on. However I'm trying to find one that fits my needs and perhaps upgrade or get a future proof one in the future. I currently have an elgado hd60s+, however I was only able to use it a handful of times to capture my switch before I started getting the no signal messages no matter how many different ways I tried setting it up. Hence why I am a little hesitant to get the elgado x or the one you equip to your pci. Nonetheless thanks for the info.

Hey! No worries! I've got the same model and a cheap one like this video - the Elgato I would recommend literally unplugging it and replugging it into a different port, and possibly going into OBS --> right clicking the capture card source --> properties and disable/enable. Hey Broeren, No worries, so essentially with your setup, if you want to capture Switch footage and be able to watch the gameplay on the TV you'll need to: - Get a capture card & a splitter OR Get a capture card that has built in HDMI out (though these are more expensive) - You may need some extra HDMI cables possibly and a USB cable to power the splitter Then: - HDMI cable from Switch to splitter - HDMI cable from splitter to TV - HDMI cable from splitter to capture card That way you can still watch the gameplay on your TV , plus capture footage via the capture card :) The alternative is just getting a capture card, but you wouldn't be able to use the TV and would need to play Switch through OBS That way is fine BUT you may get some input lag when watching the gameplay through OBS, so I would always recommend a TV or monitor for watching the gameplay Hope that helps!

@TeeChu Жыл бұрын
It doesn’t really depend on the tv as much, but the console you’re capturing- eg if the console does 1080p max - like switch - the capture card would capture that 1080p signal really Some may try to upscale but to be honest, 1080p max is probably good enough for now! If streaming, most viewers won’t have the super fastest internet and would likely be watching streams on 1080p or less. If you plan to output the capture card to the TV (eg using an HDMI splitter alongside the capture card), the cheaper usb card would work well!

Nice! a cheap $5 capture card should do the job really - personally I wouldn't spend too much on one until you need it!

No worries at all! The cheaper cards work very well :) My partner's been using the same one since 2021 for recording and streaming, still works great :) Tutorial video for setting up: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4GwdoWhhqqgorc With cheaper cards you may notice a little input lag from controller to screen - if you have a TV or second screen available, I would recommend using that to watch gameplay: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqG0pWqKf514mtk Enjoy! Love a good AC stream :)

Can you hdmi capture card while you Nintendo switch is plugged into your tv
@TeeChu2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Yep - so to get this to work: With cheaper cards: So cheaper cards don't have an output to TV, so for these you'll need to get an HDMI splitter as well - and the setup would look like - HDMI cable from Switch to HDMI splitter HDMI cable from Splitter to TV HDMI cable from Splitter to Capture Card With more expensive cards: More expensive cards usually have an HDMI output or TV output built in, so you can output to the TV or second screen without needing a splitter (e.g. the Elgato HD60 or Avermedia cards have this) That way you can play on the TV and still use the capture card to record footage :)

Love for this bro, but couldn't really see a difference 🤔

Thanks! Ya pretty much - the difference is so so so small - colours and very small resolution differences but ya, the cheaper one is the way to go for those starting to stream and you can even get a spare incase it breaks haha!

Zelda for life! So what I would recommend for a TV (or second monitor) setup: - This or similar USB3 capture card - An HDMI 1-in-2 out splitter (something like amzn.to/3hOLWYj) So the console's HDMI does into the splitter, and then outputs (mirrors) to two HDMI outputs - one output will go into the capture card, the other into your TV or second monitor That way you can get a perfect output on your TV whilst still streaming/recording on the capture card :) More expensive cards (like Elgato) have the TV output already built in, but these cheaper ones need a splitter if you want to get it on the TV TV/second screen output is optional but recommended as there is some subtle slowdown if watching the gameplay in OBS!

@@TeeChu the reviews on that second link are extremely sus and are about a bunch of different other random products, and it's claiming it can do 4k for only like $5 more than the first one that says 1080p. I'd stick with that first link

Will the HDMI splitter impact the lag to OBS even more than it already has? I have the capture card and can't play through OBS with the input lag, however I'm hoping it doesnt effect it even more when the splitter is used (still waiting for delivery). Please let me know :)
@TeeChu3 жыл бұрын
Great question Ryan - yep, from what I've seen it shouldn't lag OBS any further - the signal you get split to the TV (or a second monitor) would be full speed Viewers on your streams won't notice really - but in terms of input delay ya, always best to play on a TV/second monitor for zero lag! Don't forget you may need a USB cable for the splitter for extra power as often that's the cause of signal loss too!
