Comparison Video of Street Fighter II': Champion Edition / ストリートファイターIIダッシュ CHAMPION EDITION (Capcom 1992) featuring gameplay of the following versions:
0:00 Arcade (1992)
1:11 Genesis (1993)
2:11 PC Engine (1993)
3:03 Sharp X68000 (1993)
4:22 Master System (1997)
5:57 Sega Saturn (1998)
6:59 PlayStation (1998)
8:11 J2ME (2006)
9:35 BONUS: Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting (Normal Mode) (1993)
10:39 BONUS: Game Boy (1995)
You can watch our Versions Comparison video of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior here:
• Street Fighter II: The...
Street Fighter II': Champion Edition is the second version of the successful Street Fighter II saga, that features the 4 bosses of the original as a playable fighters from the beggining, resulting in 12 playable characters instead of the 8 of the first version.
BONUS: Released in Super Nintendo, Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting featured a "Normal Mode" based on Champion Edition Rules, so considering is not exactly the same game we've added it as a Bonus. The same goes with Game Boy version, although it has more similarities with Champion Edition than World Warrior, does'nt have its exact name, so we've added it as a bonus as well.
After many efforts, we've found impossible to obtain an official flash version released for free when Street Fighter IV was released. This version was developed by DotEmu, and featured the complete arcade game playable in a browser window.
Which port did you play? Which one do you think is the best?

The PSOne and Saturn versions were advertised as being direct 1:1 Arcade perfect ports. The only difference is the PSOne version preloaded the BGMs onto the system's memory while the Saturn didn't, which is why the Saturn version has a slight delay for the music in some transitions. Other than that, yeah they're pretty much 1:1. The Sharp X68000 looked very similar to the Arcade version too, but that's because the Arcade version was coded on the Sharp X68000. The main difference in the home version was in the Audio. Since the Arcade boards had a separate sound processor dedicated to the Audio and the X68000 didn't, the sound on the retail port wasn't as good.

The Saturn and PS1 versions had the HUD made smaller and the score repositioned. It annoyed me though some would find it meaningless. Capcom always did things like this. I suspected they didn't want to give people a perfect port. However, I think it may have been because of the Saturn's lower resolution of 352 x 224 compared to CPS1's 384 x 224. There's no real excuse for PS1 because I think it can do a resolution very close to CPS1. I prefer the Sharp X68000 version.

My favorite port is the Mega Drive / Genesis one (shame about the croaking voices), but I find the SNES and PC-Engine ones very very good too (in that order). For those with doubts about it, Special Champion Edition (MD) and Turbo/Hyper Fighting (SNES) are the same, but if you select "normal mode" in the options, you play standard Champion Edition (best SF2 in my opinion, better than Super SF2)

Yeah, emulator is either misconfigured or broken since drums apparently aren't being sent properly to MIDI channel 10. Then again, how exactly do those early 4-channel "polyphonic" MIDI phones define drums anyway (since they have no channel 10), just hardcoded to another MIDI channel or something fancier? ...or, thinking about it, perhaps the game thinks it's running on a 4-channel device (perhaps coded specifically for those?) but the emulator is emulating a newer fully 16-channel GM capable phone?

Although other versions, like PS, Saturn and of course Arcade look and sound much better, I still stick with the "rough" Mega Drive / Genesis version. Somehow, I like the darker look and the raw voice samples. I think it suits better to a fighting game than clean voices, but that´s just my opinion. Propably because I grew up with it. It is my most favourite version of the entire franchise until today ! It was fun watching the GameBoy version, because it triggered special feelings about my childhood - my best friend back then was the better Street Fighter 2 player than me, especially World Warrior and most times, I had no real chance beating him, because he had a Super Nintendo and he played it all the time. I only had a GameBoy in these days. But then, the Street Fighter 2 GameBoy version appeared and I was able to train :D ! My friend had a Super GameBoy, so we were able to play the GameBoy version on the TV ; and I won almost every single match, because he wasn´t able to adapt :D . He disliked that version forever, I think :D !

The Mega Drive (Genesis) version is more akin to Hyper Fighting than it is to Champion Edition. In any cases, it's easily the best 4th gen ("16-bit") console version of Street Fighter II even though it was the last one that I acquired (back then I had the SNES versions then more recently I got the PC Engine version and even more recently I got the Mega Drive version). It's a bit of a shame that it underuses the hardware in some ways (most notably resolution and sound) but it's still a blast, a timeless game that plays like a dream with the Mega Drive 6 button controllers!
@EnigPartyhaus

That's because Capcom's MD port was just a wonky port of the SNES release of Hyper Fighting with a few improvements, a port they made after screwing over another developer that was working on an arguably superior port. @davezanko9051 2 жыл бұрын
@@EnigPartyhaus I wouldn't call being unhappy with the work "screwing over". Contract work is contract work. If you don't please to client, the contract gets cancelled. That said, I don't know if I agree with their decision back then. From everything I've seen if it, the prototype was pretty good. They probably overreacted to the Japanese press's criticism of the black bar (the decision to delay and restart development was made by Capcom Japan which would have seen that criticism up close; Capcom USA was eager to get the game out to beat Mortal Kombat to market). And if they really did feel the need to fix the black bar issue, well, if the theory is correct that the "ST II Turbo" bootleg is in fact the final build of the prototype with the title screen altered, then they had succeeded with that. Capcom totally could have released the game in June 1993 like they originally intended (and like the PC Engine version was) and made a mint. Sega might not have been all that happy that the Super NES Turbo would come out only a few months later, but those months would have been a nice exclusive window to grab some key console sales. Instead they got the same thing at the same time, and both were trounced by the marketing juggernaut of Mortal Kombat.

Never did like the mega drive /genesis port of street fighter probably because I had the snes version back in the day. I remember the TV adverts showing some child playing pong whilst waiting for the cartridge to hit the shops in the UK, whilst I had an import American cartridge & a converter, I'd been playing it for a few months before the large retailers had it on their shelves. God bless the small independent computer game shops where real customer service still went on. Got to hand it to the guys who ported it to the Mighty Master System, late to the party but did a good job & the Sega saturn version (from this video anyway) seamed very close to the arcade. Still have an original SNES with a copy of this on an American cartridge, & it still puts a smile on my face to this day.

The Genesis port is basically the same game as the SNES one, with the main differences being that it features the original arcade opening sequence, "Group Battle" as an extra game mode, and having certain features directly available without the need for cheat codes. The change in title responds to two things: a) It was originally intended to be a straight port of Champion Edition, just as the PCE version. However, as the content from Turbo was added to make it comparable to the SNES release, name changes had to be made in order to reflect this. b) More importantly, there was an exclusivity contract between Capcom and Nintendo over the rights to the "Turbo" branding on home consoles.
@davezanko9051
@davezanko9051 2 жыл бұрын
It's an interesting story about the Genesis version. After Nintendo got the Super NES version of the original SFII as an exclusive, Sega (and NEC) both managed to convince Capcom to release versions of Champion Edition for their machines, which didn't technically fall under the exclusivity deal. The Genesis version, after a few months of rumors, was formally announced in March 1993 at a big joint press conference at a hotel near Sega of America's HQ in California. To the surprise of many the planned release was only three months away in June 1993, and there were pretty advanced playable prototypes present, estimated to be about 75-80% complete. The reaction to the prototype was good, though the Japanese press made a pretty big deal about the life bars being above the play field in a black area. Apparently Capcom had farmed out the conversion to a developer with Genesis experience, allowing for its relatively quick diversion to such an rather compete state, though who exactly that was remains unrevealed (the most likely candidate appears to be a company called Opera House which handled Genesis ports of some Data East arcade games). The PC Engine version was developed in-house by Capcom, however, mostly by adapting material from the Super NES version of the original. It was also announced for a June 1993 release, and was published on schedule by NEC. (All PCE third-party games were actually licensed to NEC for publishing; note how the PCE version says "licensed to NEC", not "licensed by NEC".) Meanwhile, the arcade version of Champion Edition had received the official Turbo upgrade in response to bootleg upgrades coming out of Taiwan (most famously the "Rainbow Edition"). Looking to re-counter Sega and NEC's landing of the Champion Edition, Nintendo convinced Capcom to do an SNES port of SFII Turbo, which was announced at the June 1993 Summer Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and due out in the fall. Looked like Sega's coup had been foiled. Except that apparently Capcom's Japanese brass wasn't happy with the Genesis version so far shown (probably largely as a result of the Japanese press's criticism of the prototype, but also finding it a nightmare to debug) and delayed the game for a total overhaul done in-house, resulting in the Genesis version being released as the "Special Champion Edition" around the same time as the Super NES Turbo release, allowing it to have the exact same Turbo enhancements. Meaning the two were pretty much the same game despite the titles, just with the sort of differences one found between versions of any title that appeared on both platforms. Thing is, Capcom USA was against the idea of delaying the game, because they knew that a delay meant lost sales to a certain other fighting game due out in fall 1993. But Mortal Kombat has never been as popular in Japan and Capcom Japan overruled releasing the game in June. Capcom USAwas right, as Mortal Kombat outsold the Genesis version of SFII and the Super NES Turbo (though the latter's sales were also depressed by there being a lot of people who already had the first SNES version and didn't feel the need for an upgraded version). Most recently, in July 2020, a couple of EPROMs showing the cancelled prototype Genesis version surfaced, one dated from March 1993 (and therefore probably the same build shown at the original press conference), and another dated July 1993, after the decision to can that version was already made, strangely enough. In looking at them, it's become apparent that a bootleg that's been floating around since 1994 is in fact the last build of that prototype, and it addressed the black bar issue. Capcom USA was right that they totally could have released that version for its original announced date and would have made plenty of sales, the extra few months clearly giving the Genesis version both a leg up on the Super NES Turbo and Mortal Kombat.

And the X68k version, like most x68k games, has multiple options for sound output, this is possibly the built in audio I guess but add-in MIDI cards were common on that machine, I've seen videos before where the sound has been a perfect match to the arcade - not surprising considering, as the legend goes, the game was developed on the x68k in the first place. Love watching anything to do with SF2 though, how many days did my lunch money go in this machine when I was at high school, I'm glad I will never know :)

@@mattpowell8369 The PCE version has black bars to the sides of the lifebars and at the top where the score is located. Perhaps you misremember it? And the X68K (as well as the FMT) was a monster back then. [Near] arcade perfect ports (many with extra modes or features) plus the possibility to change MIDI modules = instant win.

tecnicly the sharp x68000 version was the origingal in some way. the story goes that Capcom used the x68000 as a development system for the cps1 arcade board, so a near perfect port to that system was a no brainer, even leaving aside the system's reputation as a breeding ground for arcade perfect ports.

I grew up on the Super Nintendo version, which was one of the first games i ever played, so it's my favorite version by default. I also like to give an honorable mention to the PC-Engine version, which is a truly phenomenal port, for a console that is not truly 16 bit. It plays well and has all the essential stuff that you expect from this version of Street Fighter 2.

Arcade: Hands down the best Revision. Ask some guy in his forties/fifties, and they'll say "I was badass in SFII" Genesis: Does things quite right, even has a "three button layout" for the Activator controllers. Needed a tweak in voice samples, though. PC Engine: Never knew about this port until the Hi Score Girl anime. The best portable option! If only this were released in Turbografx-16... Sharp X68000: This comes really close to the Arcade. Sadly was a Japan only release. Master System: Tectoy had Balls of Steel doing this from scratch. I respect that. Needed more responsive controls, like the GB. Sega Saturn: It's ok, but not scaling graphics kinda throws me off. PlayStation: Also based on the SS, and these two had loading screens. J2ME: NEXT! Super Nintendo: Never have been a fan of HF, so this was a warm welcome. Other that does things right. Gameboy: Yes, this is more CE despite using SSF2 portraits, using the super Gameboy adds an special border of the stage, that's cool.

"The best portable option!" I'm not sure about what you mean here. when playing with a PC engine GT? because if so, then it's actually a major annoyance due to the limited 2 button layout of the system if you want to play on the go then the sega nomad and its 6 button layout offers a far better experience and the mega drive port of the game also happens to be the best of the 4th gen consoles!

@TanookiSuit
@TanookiSuit 3 жыл бұрын
I think it was the large sprites, not something GB was entirely happy with and the small cart size for the assets which is also why it lacked some characters like Dhalsim that needed more due to being stretchy. If you look at what Takara did for primarily SNK on the GB, they did the cute SD or chibi style art for Samurai Shodown 1 (3 in Japan too), KOF 95 and 96, World Heroes 2 Jet, and a couple Fatal Fury games you'd be surprised. The characters are highly detailed but short and cute (chibi) yet they have a ton of animation frames compared to SF2 and it runs entirely fluid and smooth. Every character, stage, move all retained other than dropping to the 2 button setup. Each game even had hidden characters included as well, such as SS1 having the refree and Amakuza(boss) as playable. Capcom went for visuals over gameplay smoothness and complete game roster. It's a great game, but could have been astoundingly excellent with more effort. Also not shown, the SuperGB borders and color schemes.

Because SF2 Champion Edition never made it to the Turbo Grafx 16 in the West as it was a Japan-only release for the PC Engine
@davezanko9051
@davezanko9051 2 жыл бұрын
The PC Engine was a significant player in the Japanese market with many more games (and significant exclusives found on no other consoles) that was the first console to the generation, outsold the Mega Drive, and remained a solid #2 throughout the generation even after the release of the Super Famicom. Meanwhile the TurboGrafx-16 was a market afterthought that failed to have any significant impact and was discontinued by the end of 1993, years before the PC Engjne was discontinued. Its North American sales were weak from the start, leading them to dump the European PAL Edison (after selling off the few units actually built to two distributors and then never manufacturing more). They never even got a version of Mortal Kombat (something even the Sega Master System did) which tells you all you need to know about it's lack of western market significance. So when discussing the platform, the Japanese version is much more relevant to pretty much any discussion, as that's the market which games were intended for. Especially for games that were never released in the west.

The Gameboy Version ISNT a port of champion edition: Some characters have their SSF2T Moves, not all characters are in it (Claw, Dhalsm, E. honda) They didn't add any of the New Challengers or these these 3 cause of Memory Limitations. And it has a 2 button set up to do 2 attacks each Tap for Light and Hold for a few seconds for heavy. I consider SF2 on the Gameboy to be its own Version like SF4 3ds Edition

In Brazil, yes. TecToy, Sega's longtime distributor in that country continued local production to sell it as a budget system for like a decade and a half after it was discontinued elsewhere, and it continued to sell because it was so cheap, which is pretty appealing in an emerging market. It helps that converting Game Gear games for it was also pretty simple, being they're near-identical hardware.
