Great video. How about camphor? Is it ever used in the cooking? I was in China in 2017, making a documentary about Taoist body cultivation practices in Shanghainese parks and was amazed by the deep spiritual connection people have with camphor trees. I am unsure as to whether it is used in the cooking however.

1, I think Chinese are quite satisfied with their current government, mostly for economic growth.The majority of Chinese were in extreme poverty during centuries, but now their living standards have been raised to an unprecedented level. They don’t just obey the government passively but support it.(I don’t like the idea that we could decouple the government and people with a clear line because they live in a same political ecosystem.) 2, There were some bloody conflicts between Han Chinese and Muslim communities of China in history. The frequent terrorist attacks,ethnical conflicts and the islamphobic sentiment poured from European medias due to migrant crisis fuel a fear against Muslims. So the sympathy of many Chinese for Muslims are very limited. Only leftists who hold their old egalitarian belief are concerning about the Muslim minorities. 3, CCP govt isn’t that oppressive, it’s more like a centralized bureaucratic govt as acient China instead of a communist or nazi totalitarian regime. It’s full of corruption, stupidity,rigidness and rudeness, but not so oppressive as you think.Many informations about China are exaggerated and many are rumors.From my perspective , the massacre,forced marriage ,rewriting of Quran, demolishing of masjds or eliminating of Uyghur culture seems not very possible. But there may still be discrimination, mass detention, forced education or forced labor.The administration style of Xingjiang local governments are doubtful ( Recently they seemed to lock some people who came to Xingjiang from other provinces into awful condition for quarantine) 5,This is merely my observation, can’t be very credible for I live by the coast, far far away from Xingjiang. I only contacted with some Uyghur students in my university and they seemed fine and free(my school has mass enrollment plan towards Xingjiang and a halal canteen). Xingjiang residents or someone who study this topic will know more than me,the issue there is quite complex. Personally I think the ethnic policy of China and the ethnic mindset of Chinese are problematic,I hope the public can discuss it openly and reasonably, instead of ignoring it or poisoning it with awful sentiment, but I’m pessimistic about this.

Hi Emily. It's a very "hospitable" street. Should you make it to Wuhan, I suggest you go to Hubu Alley early (before 11:00AM), before the lunch crowds set in. Also, unless you have the ability to pay with a QR code enabled phone, bring cash, as credit cards are not too popular there.
