In this video, I interview regular people on the street about car detailing. I ask if they take their car to the car wash, if have they ever got a full interior and exterior detail, and how much they think a full detail costs. Their answers gave us great insight into how our detailing customers think. Hope you enjoy it.

This is absolutely wild. $40 is nuts. What I've understood is the common person really isn't willing to spend more than like $100 on detailing and I think it's mainly because they just aren't educated on what detailing is and what it really entails. To clean absolutely every single area thoroughly. I guess you really just need to be a car person to care enough to get it

I personally charge my buddies 150 just for the exterior depending on condition. They joke around saying I rip them off but I told them to take it to an actual detailing business who is more experienced than I am. To make matters short they told me 150 is a steal for what I do. More of this for sure! The industry is highly unregulated still. It’s our duty to educate the public on the difference between a Professional IDA Certified Detailer, or the like, versus just anyone who buys some all purpose cleaner and some soap, labeling themselves a “detailer”.

That sounds great actually. Seems like you are in a good place. But if you were already doing high-end work, I think you should step it up at the beginning of the year. If yourself a $20 bump. Instead of 180 starting price for that size vehicle, make it $200. Will it be nice to clear 300 a day on the weekends? The real question to ask is, if you deep cleaned your vehicle on the interior, how long would it take you? If you deep cleaned the exterior, how long would it take you? Then explain what you do and the time you put in to detail every part of the vehicle. The next question is, how much would you want someone to pay you to do that work. Then, you will get a true answer to the worth and value. A detail vs a car wash is a huge difference. Understanding the difference is key. I easily spend 3-5 hrs washing and cleaning my truck. I am very pickly and I do so every week or two. So much so, I cant bring myself to hire anyone else to do it because my expectations are not the standard. I would go broke paying someone to detail the way I want it done. Customers like me understand what a true detail is. I would definately pay by the hr. Customers will view it differently if they completely understand what they are receiving.

Your prices should reflect you current market in your area. You cannot base your rates off Danny's unless you are Detailing in the same city. This is sure fire way to fail in the industry and it's been happening to detailers. You have to be competitive to other detailers in YOUR area or metro.

I've been in the industry for over 25yrs now and what I have learned is that most ppl don't really know what a complete Detail entails,most ppl think that a carwash is a Detail. I've had clients that call me abt a detail and when I tell them the price they're like "I just wanted a wash and a good vacuum and wipe down" and then expect to pay a carwash price,so bcuz of that I started to educate ppl that call me abt a "detail" and I started asking them what is that they thought a detail was and they would describe it to me as a carwash so that's when I would explain to them aby the different services and prices,but yeah if you don't explain it to them ppl think that a carwash is a detail...

I dont think it hurts detailers from doing fair business, i think it prevents them from overcharging. I highly doubt the guy charging 40 bucks is breaking even just to compete which shows its economical. Smart choice is get the 40 dollar clean then detail it urself for 30 minutes after plus no one to blame for accidental scratches to your seats doors ect.
@dannys.auto.detailing_
@dannys.auto.detailing_ Жыл бұрын
Can’t think of a name, I think $40 detailers are mostly hurting themselves. I don’t think they value their work very much. Or maybe they just don’t put enough effort into it and care. Now if you got a business a brick and mortar with multiple employees doing $40 car washes at 5 to 10 minutes per car wash now there’s good money there. But when you’re real high-end detailer who is invested in their company And wants to make a good living, then you’re not gonna charge $40. You’re gonna charge what you’re worth. And there are many people out there that I want to pay it

My last detail was an interior only, as a lot are. It was pretty pricey even for myself ($700) but to be fair it was a Toyota Sienna, and it was trashed with dirt, dog hair, food, and spills from the kids. I took 12 hours, giving it my all (as always) making sure that interior was as perfect as possible! She was shocked when I was done and gave me a huge tip on top of that, and wouldn’t let me leave without it! I want all my clients to get the best of the best from me, whether you’re a Mom with a minivan, or Real Estate Broker with a Porsche 🙂 I feel like detailing has blown up this year, even more than last! At least in my area, which there’s plenty of vehicles to go around, but not everyone knows about detailing. I do get calls from time to time where I have to prepare someone before I give them a quote because I know they are expecting it to be $30-$60, certainty under $100 lol and that’s not their fault especially when it’s their first detail! They just don’t know, and why would they? They’re not like us weirdo detailers on KZbin, watching videos of other detailers? So definitely, I think it’s important to inform people about what an actual full detail is, and what it will cost with an experienced detailer. Stumbled upon this video, and it’s great!

You should do another video like this but ask them what their “full detail” persists of. Like do they think a full detail just just a deep clean no wax just a vacuum and wipe down of the inside vs what a detailer thinks of a full detail aka possible paint enhancement/correction and carpet cleaning and getting every spec of dirt out of the interior. As a detailer your thought of a full detail will be different than a ordinary persons. I feel like thats where the main pricing “issues” come from. I always ask specifically what the customer wants done then price accordingly ive even done special thing like a guy just wanted the bugs off the front of his car. Great Video! There is a lot $40 to $100 Chuck's with a truck detailers out there. Many car wash washes offer express detailing for less than $150. Most people think a detail is a wash, wax and tire shine on the outside. Then vacuum, armor all and spot stain removal on inside.

I will always start a new customer on a full detail package which starts around 260 car / 280 midsize suv or 300 trick or large suv. Then if they return within 5weeks they qualify for my maintenance prices which are 120/140/160. All my maintenance packages include sealant and my full details include wax application via polisher. I charge 40$ extra for vehicles with super dirty interiors or super dirty wheels as those are extremely time consuming when done properly.

This was cool to watch. I've thought about doing this myself just to understand customer thought process. As for pricing though, your prices in Cali are way way higher than most places in the middle of the country. I think our prices should be reflective of our currenr area and cist of living in them. For example, a full detail here with one company is $75. It a woman owned business and she is extremely successful with employees, so $400 for a Detaill is half the rent for many people here or a months of groceries. My Interiors are right in the middle of other detailers at $90 no shampoo and $120 if I have to use that extractor. Ive called every detailer that would answer the phone from Google my business for my city. Our highest guy around here charges high but he Details very high end vehicles, like show cars only, but even his rates are below you around $250 for his base rate for an Interior. Cost of living MUST play a role in our rates. So to suggest a $40 or $50 detail on KZbin channel is killing your profession is not true UNLESS it were in YOUR city. But this tells Detailers out here they are to cheap, but the end result is it increases failure for those in the middle of the country. In Kansas I would be done for if I even thought about $350-$400 Interior Details. As a fellow Detailer I would definitely caution against that. Or at least mention it. Even though you didn't show it on video, we're you able to provide an adequate list of what a Detail entails for that $350 rate to those customers? Maybe it would help them to know why it costs more than they expected. Great video. Have a wonderful week. It to cold to detail here right now but my best to you!!

Thanks for the feedback and your valuable perspective. I will definitely keep all this in mind on the future details and I will mention that this is based on my city only. And I am prepared to go deeper down to the mind of each person on the next video. And I will definitely explain to them what they get for such a premium price

@@detailgrandma22 I live in a somewhat rural area. The starting price for my Interior is $250 and my Exterior starts at $350. That does not mean that modeling my path or choices is correct and (personally) definitely not easy. I do not apologize for my pricing any more than I want to change the hearts of many of the viewers. I believe the further you go away from enthusiasts to mainstream, the important your pricing and services have to align with the general demographics of your area. I mention this because I believe something significant for anyone getting into detailing as business was showcased in this video. Detailing at its core has been a luxury and niche service. Its exclusivity has been a combination of (through generations) people not understanding and also often not having the funds for ""high end"" services. With this business being a lower barrier to entry and people who started with a passion for a high level detailing but not sales and marketing skills, it often is a setup for disappointment. We can tell people over and over, not everyone is your customer (etc) but watching this video might help open the eyes of a lot of people who need to take starting a business more seriously. A lot of these people who are trying to offer the best, but are also trying to be reasonably priced for many who begrudgingly give $100 will find themselves realizing they were (much) better off financially working for someone else for $15 - 20 an hour after accessing expenses and paying taxes. Hopefully this video can also encourage or shock new business owners into NOT trying to please everyone.

I wash my car 4-12x a year and go to a coin wash for the pressure washer (~$2-3), when we visit family and I have access to a driveway and hose/etc I detail and iron/clay/spray seal. There’s no way I would pay $300+ to have my car “cleaned”, however, I would pay the big bucks to have my paint corrected, or cloth seats vacuum extracted. How much should a car wash cost? What does that include? How much should a professional seat and/or carpet cleaning and ozone gen. odor removal cost? IMO you aren’t competing with car washes you’re providing solutions beyond the car wash. Things that car washes can’t/don’t do and things the customer doesn’t have time/skill/equipment to do. The “reset” concept is a good one, it separates your service from a car wash.

That's actually a very interesting way to maybe get some more business. Certainly gets a taste for the market you're in as to what people think its worth and educate them on the difference between detailing and just a wash. I'm just getting started doing it as a side hustle right now so I'm charging less than detailers in my immediate area that have their prices listed on their website. I'm in the DFW, TX area. I'm charging $50 for an exterior and $50 for interior for the lowest end package. I did an SUV the other weekend that has had a baby in the backseat and I charged $150 for the deeper clean on the interior. I did a full detail, spot shampoo, claybar, polish, and ceramic coat for a friend for $250, but he bought the ceramic coat separately. Those prices aren't sustainable long term. I'm learning how much time I spend on each car and how much product I go through. Product and machines cost money and time is money. I'm using up all day of my Saturdays to do it while still working full time at my day job, so it doesn't make sense to just get $100 a car for what most people want done to their car. After I get a few more cars in and get reviews I will raise the prices and see if people are willing to pay more.

I used to do interior details for $125 and spend 4-6 hours on them. They would look amazing. I'd almost always get tips. It was good. But after a while it just wasn't worth the time. Sometimes I'd just have time for one a day and get burned out. I had several customers tell me I didn't charge enough. I found it hard after a while to pay for all my products and pay all my bills at that rate. It's just not enough. Especially in a single income family. I charge $180 now for the same detail matching other detail rates around me in my area. It makes more sense for me also materials and cost of living have gone up the last couple years. I have a different clientele now aswell. With 10 years experience and thousands of dollars in tools I just can sell myself short like I used to.

$40 dollars isn’t sustainable so eventually they charge more or quit so I’m not worried about it. Minimally need to charge starting from $60-80 for a good wash and $80-100 for a basic maintenance detail. I believe the price quoted is not a full detail tho. I feel there is a place in the industry for everyone as long as it works for your business model. At the end of the day your clientele will be different. Imo the cheaper you charge the pickier the client and stingier they are. Whereas you charge $80 and get a $20 dollar tip understand this is a luxury service and truly appreciate the work put into their vehicle.

Excellent survey👍🏽I'm a detailer myself, so it was fantastic to see what people think🤔 We deal with clients that love their cars but the average person who sees their vehicles as just getting them from A to B, cleaning their car themselves is a big hassle and takes too much time, but in the same breath, they'll go to the car wash and spend a couple of bucks, but they will not hire a detailer like yourself because they know it will come with a cost 💵 when you ask them how much they say anywhere around $80 to $100 they're smart they know you're a detailer so that's what they would like you to charge😅 that lady who said she paid $40 for her detail, and she was happy is lying😉 and even if she was telling the truth I'm sure she had to search for that guy that would do it for 🥜😅 I guess I'm trying to say some people appreciate their cars because they want their car and brand to represent them you have to find those people👍🏽

I explain that the price could increase up an extra 100, if I need to do more work to meet their expectations once I've seen the car. Once I see the car and give a final price, if they aren't up for the bump in price, I will tell them I can do a 160 dollar detail and then they can decide if they want more done. It would be hard to justify to someone making median income to spend that kind of money. Although I'm not a detailer myself, part of the value proposition is how we value labor. For example, a car mechanic charges about $65/hr but is very technical in terms of knowing how to repair a car. When it comes to detailing, the technical skill may not arise to that level, but does require some level of experience in order to properly detail. I think to help educate the public is being transparent with the pricing. For example, for a detail, how much time does one spend doing the exterior or interior? Is it for a crew of 1 or 2? Is it using chemicals that is readily available on amazon or youtube? or some commercial brand we've never heard of? And what services are included? Is it just wash, wax, dressing and dry? does it include water proofing? With the prevalence of ceramic coatings and ceramic sprays, I think this is a good way to really expand the value proposition. But again, it goes back to how much we value labor. I don't think we value labor enough, not so much So Cal that is. I don't plan on going into the detailing business but I am fascinated with detailing enough to to learn how to be a DIYer.

I haven't found a knowledgeable, trusted and honest mechanic for less than 100$/hr. I don't know, but the mexican neighbor doesn't qualify as a "mechanic".

Moral of the story, open up a car wash. I'm a weekend warrior and do cars for free for friends & relatives and can confirm that none of them would pay $300-$400 for a full detail. There's one Benz and the rest are Acura/Subaru/Etc., max. $200 and that is really stretching it, they all assume $100-$150 for a full detail(4-6hrs worth of work). You really have to find the right clientele $ to be a full-time detailer.

Great points. And that is very true you’ve got to find the right clientele. Julie good work, and friendly. Communicative. But I guess it does depend on where you live. But I know I’m getting Details at 350 400 450 regularly.

With the urban SF area being one of the highest cost-of-living areas in the county, the type of cars and perceived value people had, is not surprising. I would guess these are not your typical customer? I would be very interested in you doing the same thing, in a more suburban, affluent area?

Absolutely. There are many different little sub communities in San Francisco. More affluent ones as well. I’m going to be doing this. I really liked her the video turned out and I feel like it is the tip of the iceberg.

Most people aren't familiar with what a truly professional exterior/interior detail consists of and will do for their vehicle. I'm an enthusiast and I frame my investment in equipment and chemicals as spending a little bit here to potentially add thousands of dollars of resale value to my vehicle if I ever trade it in or sell it privately. Detailers save people time and protect the value of their vehicles.

A good question to go along with this would be how much time you think it would take you if you were to detail your car yourself, to me this would explain pricing a bit more of there understanding of a detail compared to a quick n go.

Yeah a lot of people whose cars I’ve detailed tell me they’ve tried themselves and it takes them a whole day for a serious clean. Being in AZ most people don’t want to do anything in the heat also 😂
