Street Photography With Cats - Alan Schaller in Oman

I've been photographing cats for years and I love them as subjects despite them being very tricky to work with! On this adventure in Oman, you will learn some of the techniques and concepts that I use to get the shots of our feline friends. Enjoy!

Great video. My wife and I have made calenders the last two years of cat images we take on our travels. The 2024 calendar was Andalucian cats (Granada , Cordoba, Sevilla) and our current calendar was images from Sicily (Fall of 2024). It's a way we can remember our trip and get to interact sometimes with very loving kitties 😸! Not sure what we will do for our 2026 calendar as we have no trips to Europe planned. Istanbul sounds like it may be of interest though!!

It’s very impressive that you can zone focus with the aperture wide open with a shallow depth of field. Any additional advice to maximize the focus accuracy in this context?

Manual focus lenses make it easy by simply reading the depth of field distances .

Perfect, got the link from a friend. Tons of cat pictures. Usefull and fun, but Im quite good in cat photography. Hate to shot people, have a fluffy friends at home for decades. Easy choice in photography. Vintage lens plus modern camera is the key to art photography.

I'm feline good after watching that. I was in Sidi Ifni, Morocco, recently and there were plenty of friendly feral cats there with great light and textures. Unfortunately, I had the flu for most of the trip.

The best way to take pix of cats is to take a great camera and lens, point it at a cat, compose a great shot, and press the shutter release button. Voila, you have a great shot if you have the talent. If you don't you won't. Unless you've been lucky. And you get luckier the more you do it. Simples.

I really enjoyed that you didn't say you wished the M11M had a "flip screen" while crouching down to photograph the cats. How much motion can the M11M endure with the electronic shutter before distorting?

I know what the camera is doing without needing a flip out screen so I’ve never worried about them! It’s best to photograph stationary subjects with electronic shutters.
