i’ve got really bad imposter syndrome right now… see, theres a videographer job at work, and i’ve been a graphic designer for so long (14 years now jeez). I’ve been shooting a bunch of video in my spare time, i’ve volunteered and shot a few events for work, and i know i’d do pretty well at it… but its so scary leaving something so comfortable and moving into the unknown, theres goona be people applying who are doing video as their full time gig and i just feel like i’m not quite ready. I know the worst they can say is no, and its even more crazy because i’ll still have my job even if i don’t get the new role, and all i need to do just get my shit together and put together some work for a portfolio. i think this is what i needed to hear, action leads to motivation

This vid is just about bang on to my experience of my photography journey. Have been interested in photography for about 5 years, just wanting to improve from your usual snap shot shooting. Followed some talented people on here, which helps with inspiration but also highlighting how far I still have to go. Nearly all these Tubers say the same thing, get out and practice. It's so easy to make excuses, "I'm tired"," it's raining","it's too cold"," there's nothing interesting local to me","the weather looks better tomorrow". The list is endless! The message to me from this vid is dead simple. Get off your arse and practice, practice, practice. In a years time I'm determined to see an improvement in myself. Thanks Rick for a timely reminder 👍🏻

What an absolutely spot on video for me . I am an epic procrastinator and you hit a great deal of nails squarely on the head. Thank you for lighting the proverbial under my butt. I hit subscribe a second after you said it. Very selfless since as you pointed out it will have a negative impact on your channel and all the other shutter bugs I follow. I will still watch too many but if I have a great moment, I plan on including all my influences in the thank you and with a special mention to you andvthis inspiring piece . Thank you, genuine gratitude for what I hope will be the catalyst I desperately needed right now.

I live less than two hours from the beauty of Yosemite and the surrounding Sierra mountains. You made me realize that I spend way too much of my time planning, overlearning or in your words consuming, instead of traveling and enjoying my hobby of photography. It’s so easy to sit down in front of a computer and watch everyone else explore and create, finding excuses not to step out my front door because I might not have the skills or equipment that others have. This video has been a wakeup call. I’m now hearing the mountains calling out again and will be heading out next week to make up for lost time. Thanks again Rick for your thoughtful videos.

It's been amazing watching your channel grow. Congrats! I feel like I'm living the dream - traveling in our van, creating videos, and incorporating photographs into those videos. This has been a huge motivation to use my camera almost every day. I find that I like to learn one thing at a time, like playing with shutter speed. I'll watch a video or 2 and then go out and focus on playing with that one skill. I like your style - get your camera and get out there. That's where the magic happens. P.S. If you ever want to come to Colorado, we'd be happy to share the stunning landscapes of the Rocky Mountains.

Just stepped into your channel, maybe thanks to KZbin's algorithms and I immediately appreciated the courage with wich You tackle certain personal and intimate issues. I'm stuck in this situation that You described very well right now. This makes You more genuine than 90% of KZbinrs and "content creators" or fake "influencers" out there, most of them clones of clones of other clones without a soul. And most of them are only there just to impress or show off their expensive toys, only feeding their personal ego instead of creating true value to make the world a better place, bringing only empty messages with no real content, basically sterile. Subscription done and congrats again for the strength You had and that You put into trying to change Your life and at the same time make this fake world a better place to be thank to Your advices and intellectual honesty. Thanks

Thank you so much for this comment. I think it can be pretty hard battling against that side of things - a lot of the stuff I have spoken about recently isn't as clickable as other videos which is unfortunate, but it does seem to be reaching the right people now so I can't complain about the algorithm too much!!

Great video mate. Just a word of caution from someone who's been down this road many times 4:48 . If you get too focused on replacing one habit with a new one, you might end up extremely frustrated when the new habit isn't as "comfortable" or "fun" as the old one right away. Long term habits we carry can be our comfort zone, and trying to directly replace that with another habit immediately can be a turn off. If you've played video games for 8 hours a day for years and then try to replace that time with learning an instrument, you'll find your brain chemistry will never allow that to happen. I've found more success in allowing myself the freedom to be "bored" as long as I am not participating in the old habits. Then, at the peak of boredom, the new habit feels MUCH more fun than staring at the wall. Hope that helps someone that's where I was. Success is not participating in the old habit, not necessarily immediately picking up the new one. Give yourself the space to just exist.

I leave this morning for the first and during some downtiime I’m going to cull my KZbin subscriptions (don’t worry, not yours or Nigel’s) and schedule more time photographing around my home. Again, Thank You so much for this inspirational talk. Keep it up. By the way, I really like your photos.

All of this is true for me personally. With photography, writing, drawing, anything really. Even coming across this video was me mindlessly looking for more information on "learning" photography techniques. Thanks for expressing clearly a philosophy for artistic growth. We are overpowered at times with options for distractions these days, deluged with info and video. It can lead to feelings of inferiority. I’ve been fighting that. In response to your video, I grounded off the TV, loaded some monochrome film, and walked my neighborhood. Thanks for your thoughts!

Wise words Rick. I watched this, turned my laptop off, and went to pack my bag ready for my early morning swim tomorrow, whilst wondering what I could do cretaively. I got the bulb from our oven (which blew at lunchtime) and set about doing some macro shots of the broken filaments lit with an LED panel, sheer joy😇. Now I'm going to reduce my KZbin chanel subscriptions (not yours obvioulsy), and reduce the number of things/people that I follow elsewhere. Thank you for pointing this out, I hadn't realised just how much of my time is taken up just sitting watching and listening to social media.👍👍👍

This is the first video of yours that I've seen, and, well, what a start, great stuff! I'm actually in the middle of doing exactly this, over consuming! If asked I say I'm in to wildlife photography but I tend to do everything other than go out and take photos,( read about it, watch videos about it, research the kit etc). So here's my public declaration that I'm going to put the effort in and document the Roe deer on my local patch, wish me luck! all the best, Ian

I would not look at it as a wasted decade. It was simply the time it took for you to get where you needed to get. If you had stopped after 9 years and 11 months, THAT would have been time wasted 🙂 As for just starting and seeing where it goes, I took some specific action earlier this week. I like to hike and take photos. Sometimes solo. Sometimes with buddies. So, I called up a couple good friends and chatted about picking a dedicated time each week to go on a hike together. They were both excited about the idea, and we start this coming Wednesday. This way, I can get in a hike with my 2 good friends, and still take my solo hikes as well. Consumption has its place, but you are right - at some point you need to find the right balance between consuming and doing. And that will be different for each of us, at different points on our path. We just need to figure out that balance, and videos like yours are a big help. Thanks.
@RickBebbingtonКүн бұрын
Very true. So easier to think of it like that though! That sounds great, hope the hike is fruitful. Thanks 👍🏻

I will watch a couple more today while I take up a hem on a skirt I am to wear at a wedding in March then I will pop out with my camera and see if I can find the beautiful Bellbird that has been visiting our neighbourhood recently here in NZ. Really enjoyed your message. I myself found myself in a funk last year. I may still be in it. But after some reflection, I am hoping to shift my perspective and MY needs. I started prioritizing more intentional photography last year. One of the hard parts is a work in construction, so I am more afraid of the dust issues, but also the recklessness involved in my industry. From others, but also myself. So instead of beating myself up for not having a ‘professional dslr’, I have just lean in hard with my iPhone. Yes, I am missing the creative functionality of a dslr, but I am still capturing and training my eye in the industry that I am find very fascinating. Prioritizing just this small part, has made me want to even more intentional with my film making. Maybe there will be a time, where I don’t need to be a construction worker, but can document what is happening. But I’m not getting there, if I don’t start. Thanks for this reminder in your message.

This is the first of your videos that I’ve seen and boy did it strike some chords. I see so much of what you said in my experience. I spend so much time on KZbin (mind you without my excessive use the algorithm probably wouldn’t have sent your channel my way) and several Facebook Fuji groups. I recognise the need to consume less and as an old boss of mine once said “JFDI”. My GAS is now under control and I’m determined to get out more this year. Thanks, you have a new subscriber. I did a 5 month trip to SE Asia , didn't take a camera as I travelled with carry on only , 7kg max, I photographed the whole trip on a pixel 3 phone, not even a camera, not even a great mobile for photography but looking back at the shots I came to the realization that it was a good enough 'camera' to take the photos I wanted and just so convenient, it was always with me, charged, and ready to go, I didn't have to think about settings or composing a shot or anything, just take out of pocket and shoot. Honestly I'm struggling going back to a camera and deciding what kit to take on my next trip, what lenses etc and I finally just said , stuff it, just taking my Samsung camera with 1 lens 18-55 and that's all anything else just weighs you down in weight and mental effort to decide what lens etc to use in a shot....

F8 and be there. This is something people often forget. The: be there, part is sometimes the hardest. For people like myself, I'm 32M I like educating myself and using it 1 to 1 from KZbin video to action asap. Treat life like a game, like a mission. You want something, okay let's read the mission for level one (YT Videos) and then do this mission (Take Action). After that do a journal, I do mine usually before bed. After each month, look back and see for yourself the progress you've made. I function the best with set rules and clean guidelines. Step 1,2,3,4 and so on, small habits chained together with routines. What shocked me is how fast you can learn, adapt and feel better about yourself. So much that I do now freelance photography and editing as freelance. Remember: F8 and BE THERE!

Same with gear, I just need one more camera bag, I just need the right light meter. I just need one more wrist strap. I think next I'm heading first to the bathroom and then to bed since it has been long day, wake up at 5:38, then to a guided birding trip that started 7:30 and ended little before 18:00. Quite a lot sitting in a bus and walking around select locations between that. Some potential to be creative, but weather didn't quite cooperate (especially in the morning when it was raining) and it is bit hard to do creative photography when you are part of 40+ person group and the primary objective to observe interesting birds. But it was still pretty nice to hang around with fellow birders and at least I didn't get stuck on the chair in front of the computer monitors at home, which tends to quite frequent thing...

Thanks for the video. I think a weekly challenge maybe a good idea for me, but rather than start on Monday, I'll start tomorrow (Sunday) so it happens and doesn't just get forgotten about. Writing this comment should help as well, the act of writing something down always makes a difference. I think a photo a day with my new phone to learn about new features could be a good start. A weekly challenge could be a good option rather than a month, as a monthly challenge can be quite a lot of one thing, hopefully a weekly challenge can keep it fresh, maybe the next challenge will be a photo using my camera each day for a week. I just came across your channel Rick, so far so (very) good.

I’m going to drive down to the Potomac River 45 min from here and see if I can get a picture of a Cardinal.

Excellent!! Even if you don't get it, I'm sure you'll still get something from it 👍🏻

Today I actually finished a roll that I started on 12/10/24. there were only six frames.... SIX. I just couldn't seem to get out and take pictures. I went to a friends house. When I left there, I drove to the near by park. It was easy once I was up and out. So, now I will have to decide on the next camera to load. You might say I'm on a roll!.... sorry. I started carrying a camera anytime I leave the house about five months ago. Often, it was just baggage. I will start taking a picture every time I am out.

You even have contacts in China! Haha! Well, what I’m gonna do, is going back home and take a shower after a run at the gym watching your video. 😂

It’s just too easy to look out the window see the crap weather, then decide to watch KZbin videos instead and pretend it’s part of our photography education!

Nice video, but the title should be changed a little bit more. It is too similar to Sam William's video title.

Over thinking, over consumption maybe that is a fear of failing. I have learned in 10 years that the many failures of photos and video’s that are crap are part of the learning process. Accept the failures with the successes. Take the experience of working with Nigel means you can do it. Nigel is a perfectionist and will be your best teacher and mentor to give you the strength to move forward. When I have finished watching this I will be editing the Thurlestone beach photos I took this afternoon as an unexpected outing with the camera and the dog.
