For 2nd, your speed matters. I mean if you have enough speed you can go in top gear. But when u have less speed than the speed required by the gear, the engine struggles a lot and consumes a lot of fuel. So, we need to use the gear according to speed.

@@josephjebin.a1903 Yea. Exactly. The speed should not exceed the gear too. I mean you shouldn't reach 30Kmph in 1st gear. It increases the rpm and the mileage drops.

1st also true, when the clutch is engaged it's in static friction and there is no slip between primary and secondary clutch pads so minimal loss but if you hold then it's dynamic friction or slip occurs so heat is generated (wasting some fuel in the form heat in clutch mechanism). Also during in traffic it's better to put transmission in neutral instead of holding clutch fully, because the clutch won't fully disengage, so it'll try to transfer power to drive train. But due the less torque the clutch is transferring the vehicle won't move. So in this disengaged state there is some amount of friction left, it'll produce heat by taking extra bit of fuel. So use neutral if you are going to stand still in traffic.
