To solve his problems with split bores, inventive Kiwi Paul Burnet built himself a Billet 202 Holden Six. It makes almost 400rwhp naturally aspirated.

I had an XU-1 in 1970 - 1973. 188 HP at the rear wheels. Twelve Port Head, three 45 mm Webbers, Barry Seaton Dyno tuned Extractors, Bored and Stroked. I had to sell to pay my mortgage. They have learned a lot about Engines in fifty years.

Back around 89 i took my 73 LJ XU-1 out the other side of Northam and opened her out for about ten miles with my foot jammed to the floor. It ran triple CD 175 Strombos and bigger valves with cutouts in the block and a bit of portwork. It wound the speedo off the clock in less than a mile and the tacho was sitting on 6800 the whole time. Had a 3.08 Bango in her so the speed woulldve been around 240. It sat on the road beautifully. In fact under 100 kph it was a bit of a pig to steer on the road. It used to jump around a bit. Above that she would find her wings and fly. To this day she is still the best handling car iv ever driven. They glue themselves to the road like a gocart does and are very very predictable. You can drive them on the throttle around sweepers at 200 clicks and not have a worry in the world. One time in the wet at 80 kph I chucked it sideways in a straight line and drove on full lock for near a mile just by blipping the throttle. I still have her but she is in need of a full resto. Cancer got the better of her. Just before i took it off the road i slipped a hot 253 in her, big cam n head work, four barrel. Itd rev over seven grand, but split the oil pick up pipe and she starved of oil while i was breaking hard. The split was just below the oil level and she rattled for a couple of seconds, lifter rattle, then regained oil pressure. I got hold of a 308 block and gave it the full treatment, Quality brand pistons, rings bearings, rods, fully balanced, lightened flywheel , solid lifter cam that started to pull hard around four three, big, big, big valves and a lot of head work. Only ever ran the same four barrel carby that i ran on the 253 though but it shoulve been fine anyway. Then along came a wife and a child and everything got put on the backburner. I ended up slipping the 308 into a one tonne and it went pretty darn well. Looked nice too, HQ Prem front end, gold 9-14 inch Hotwires on the back with 295s. and 8s on the front with 265s. Was washing machine white and had a shortened polished alli tray on it. It was a diff muncher though, four Salisburys couldnt handle the grunt and each time i put a new one in her id promise myself to take it easier. But the temptation was always too much to overcome. Specially when someone in a GT Falcon rocks up next to ya at the traffic lights and starts blipping their accelerator. I still own that old girl too and she is still getting rebuilt after being off the road for nearly twenty years. Two kids and a couple of horses and a couple of cats n dogs and a dollar hungary Mrs make sure i dont get to spend money on cars any more. The fever never ever dies though and seeing a video of this just increases the temp by a couple of degrees. What a beautifull Torrie you own mate. Im green with jealousy. Anyone who has driven a properly set up for race condition XU-1 (not a GTR). but an XU-1 will know what i mean . Brocky loved his 72 Bathurst Torana and i remember him once saying if they were able to run the 308 in one it would have been THE ULTIMATE Torana of them all. Even the A9X as the LJs were a LOT lighter. According to the VIN plates, mine was an ex SA police car. Tangerine with a brown interior, not black. I later had it redone in black. God i wish i could turn back time. The best days of my life.

Congratulations, mate, that is one incredible LJ. With that much horsepower and that super sweet sound, i can forgive its colour and love it just like it is. Would love to see this on the circuit. I used to drive an LJ with 320 flywheel hp, and that was outstanding. Give me your 400 rwhp odd, and i don't think i would ever get out of the driver's seat. Well done, friend, great video. Toranas were built to fly, and they did somewhat. Yours would be hard to keep on the ground.

400rw hp is crazy for a NA Holden 6 as a circuit car motor. I suppose though with the billet block you could modify the cam so you could have a huge base circle and set it up as a roller like a LS.
