What Shi Heng Yi says in this video reminds me of a quote by Frank Herbert from one of the Dune novels: All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible. Such people have a tendency to become drunk on violence, a condition to which they are quickly addicted.

Pathocracy is sadly possible under any political-economic system, but it happens consistently under all types of extremism. Maoist-Stalinists, Fascist versions of Corporatism, XR types, the aggressively nasty embarrassments to vegans, and AnCaps, the most hilariously selfish of all

That's actually a trick to get you to elect people like Herbert to office, I say this as a Herbert lover who even read his son's continuation. You want to avoid warlike people and elect wise, shaman-like men, yes? Because you're a smart, modern, new person and not one of those old fuddy-duddies, right? As a person who wants power and probably has a pathological personality let me just tell you that thought was set up for you by one of us to remove you from our competition and force you to vote for a pathological power-seeker without knowing it. Whoever you think is a non-pathological personality will turn out to be the most pathological personality, because it's "sword point" is facing you, you are seeing it from it's attack angle where it is hardest to actually look at. Anyway it's like 93% people like you who screw up society when they think they've found the non-pathological personality when really they just found a sociopath. Everyone you've ever felt good voting for was a sociopath, that is the normie condition, that is how anything got like this at all.

@@Suiseisexy wow that is one big strawman you just made, why don’t you take it to the desert and make a festival out of it? You know one of the major points of Herbert’s novels is to not put your trust in anyone in a position of power right?

The ironey of "stoic" is that every experienced person knows that threw this method nothing peaceful or paths to positive enlightment will be brought about because this practice makes a person cold and less human! These are large problems with false teachings making others feel this is how you gain strength! It's very dangerous! People are designed to be as they are for a reason! To much synthetic imagery! God bless and believe what makes your life better so the parts for mine and others will fit naturaly without conflict
@JelleKube
@JelleKube 2 жыл бұрын
@@nathanmciver6496 This is not stoicism. Stoicism does not tell you to discard your feelings. Stoicism and the word "stoic" is misunderstood by many. Many books and commentaries speak on this point such as "The Practicing Stoic" by Farnsworth.
@Jameslawz
@Jameslawz 2 жыл бұрын
@@nathanmciver6496 Stoicism doesn't disregard feelings, it's an observation on how the mind and body works. By having this understanding you can manage your emotions and feelings better but you don't show extreme set of emotions in high stress situations i.e. an argument or a heated debate, you show a relaxed mind and a thoughtful due process. Yes it is perfectly natural to act angry in that situation but stoicism promotes you to think about a better outcome. In a way it is fighting your natural instincts and almost becoming more robotic but it's a balance, the reason you need to be self-aware is because it gives you the cleanest decisions and you'll end up winning most of your encounters in life because of your thoughtfulness. This mental edge is an advantage to have over those who have ZERO control over their mind and emotions, having it is a plus but being too stoic does impede your judgement because human emotion is apart of human life but to be objectively truthful, stoicism is the way.

Power is more likely to lead to corruption if it was not gained through a natural progression. This often happens when the power is simply inherited, where the inheritor did not experience consequences. You see this in civilizations where one generation worked hard to achieve power, but then this power corrupts the following generations who simply inherited it. It also happens with poor people who win the lottery, because the power was not gained in a progression, which is necessary to understand how to use your power, the poor lottery winner loses his wealth pretty fast. I think whether power corrupts or not, depends on, at least partly, how you gained it.

No disrespect to the Master Shi but knowledge is ignorance. In reality there is no time to formulate your answers. Life is spontaneous, if you have to think about it it merely implies that the idea you have of yourself is getting in the way of the flow of life. A stream will flow nicely until you created a conflict by stepping in it. Formulating your answers suggests your are trying to conduct or shape the reality. In reality there is nobody who lives a life, there is only life

This is such a fresh air, always agreed with the saying of to be in monk mode, you have to be in a monk like environment, is among other monks. This is parallel with Laotzu who said, just to listen to wickedness is already the beginning of wickedness, this is synonymous with king David and Solomon, whom said he who is among fools will be the fool, he who is among the wise will become wise, who they did not tolerate wickedness around them. Jim rhon, said a lot of our habits, ethics and principles must be maintained, it’s like a garden, once you let the weeds take over you will lose the garden. One of my biggest problems is I have to accept where I am and solidify my self, I am not where I am suppose to be, and am falling off course, have to give it the Zig ziglar approach and grade my self, not just credential wise, but emotionally, and spiritually, I can’t keep conning my self, I have to be blunt and truthful that I’m not okay. And then make the proper steps to get a grip on my reality. It was fascinating how he used Star Wars as philosophical and analogies, I made a mistake also by getting away from anything modern, and only dipping into the books of stoicism, Marcus Aurelius meditations, Gautama Buddha’s Dhammapada is super helpful and the Bible’s proverbs and psalms is my go to. But I cannot fade into just the mere words of these scriptures, suttas and verses, but also like he said about our time, which is modern that needs it’s up keep, like he said, testing, which means truly acknowledging it. I…must acknowledge my priorities and shortcomings and not be delusional that I’m doing small steps and fine with being in grief, agony, sorrow and woes, but instead fully engaging it, to the fullest extant to where instead of being complacent, idle and letting my thoughts slip, I can grasp onto my bearings of mind boy and spirit. Like he said, we know it’s just a plastic statue, but it is apart of the discipline, everything effects everything else, to slack in one devotion, will seep into another discipline, this is why I must keep the practice of each hood habit in check. Thank you brethren. Namaste 🙏

This exactly why in classical 8-limbed yoga the first two limbs (yama and niyama) form the moral and ethical basis for the practice. The ancient yogis recognized that the highly trained mind is extremely powerful and so they wanted people to develop good character before gaining access to such power, otherwise the teachings of yoga could result in great suffering and destruction while their aim is to reduce suffering.

I think this is a huge issue which took root as the norm in our interaction - the perceived need to keep the convo going and even a second of pause being perceived as 'out of the norm'. As someone with a mild stutter it gave me a perspective on it I wouldn't have otherwise. Even stopping for half a second or a second to compose myself and get the word out will have people auto-completing my sentence, rolling eyes, slightly building up nervousness etc. Also pause and slower speech, and speaking less but making each word count shifts the weight of the topic and this is uncomfortable for most people, I found. While not every chit-chat has to be profound and serious, I think we would greatly benefit from ocassionally behaving as such, even in personal interactions, not just academic, philosophical and whatnot 'official' ones. tl;dr we could all profit from being more chill :)

As a 52 yr old man - father of 2 husband, small businessman the topics you are addressing are so Timely So Important and so Needed! As a former martial artist - someone that struggles to make ends meet consistently- who knows and knew that there was and is more to life than the idea of Dog Eat Dog mentality - BUT rather a new and better way - that is NOT weak, or weakness , but rather quite the opposite- It’s so funny in a way that Shi-[ Shaolin master - Europe] brings in the Jedi! It could be thought of as silly! BUT even now as an older man the ideals where good triumphs of evil - whether it’s Clint Eastwood in all his westerns - whether it’s Bruce Lee- whether it’s Bob Marley 2 of my favorites- the themes are usually the same. Use the power for good! For “ RIGHT” While that’s one aspect - What you guys are doing is so much deeper- - For My 12 year old and myself and for all people- Regardless of the perceived circumstances whether teasing at school/ perceived slight at school , peers / fitting in / the sooner we can teach our Children and ourselves to NOT only trust the rational and the head solutions but that the INTENTion Behind an action and a self awareness, along with a deep trust of the “Universe” NOT only the head the integration of intuition / confidence trust - And something I heard Calle Steph sacred 7 which I bet are in some format also in the Shaolin teachings - that’s say YOU ARE ALL THESE ATTRIBUTES- always remember YOU ARE JOY YOU ARE PEACE YOU ARE STRENGTH YOU ARE COURAGE YOU ARE GRATITUDE YOU ARE HUMILITY YOU ARE LOVE As each of us at any and all ages hopefully sooner than later take on the importance of our purpose the facts that we all learn differently that just because the masses do something and it’s the customary way does NOt mean it’s your way! If there is any way for me to help spread your messages / mission it seems very much aligned with my internal way! I never really thought of myself as intellectual nor a student and in the last several years I have with the listening ability to books podcasts you content for example I’ve “ read “ more then in my entire 48yrs prior and what’s funny is that no mater what the philosophy the practice is- they often sound so much the same and thus solidifies the belief I hold that WE are ALL way Lee similar than we are different! Marcus Aurelius was a leader whose philosophy was based on good foundations, morals and ethics. He learned philosophy and was trained not for power or privilege but because he displayed attributes which were sound and balanced. It was even ordered that he be adopted by a different family to provide him the correct social status. He was not born into wealth and due to this should never have held the positions he held throughout his life. Becoming emperor was never a position he sought and eventually only agreed to it if he could co-lead. Fascinating history.

Power takes down the restraints that inhibit the expression of a persons base nature. A person can either be better or worse.

So power without purpose and presence of mind corrupts, but power in itself is not a currupting force. It just is, it is your ambition that drives that power to a certain outcome. Knowledge is power but knowledge can be used to heal or hyrt.

Really interesting about the Jedi thing. There’s many in depth videos examining their philosophy, comparing their stoic-like practice against the more Nietzschean Sith.

The words Power,ambition and weakness are seeing as a bad trais ,but it's not so. Power in the hands of a weak leader will bring corruption whislt in the hands of the wise brings forth evolution and the birth of great leaders~ We are all weak in some aspect of our lives, we all have the power to decide what to do with the power God has given to us. Free will + Wisdom are the KEY♡

Frank Herbert said, that power attracts corruptible people. If you set up a throne for a good man, he'll get weary of constantly fighting off all the evil bastards who want it more than he does. They'll constantly stir the pot to turn people against him, until he takes the criticism of people he tried to serve as permission to leave.

If you are suffering with yourself, seek others. This is my current position in life. It was hard to find but it is current. Please listen and take heed. Knowing yourself and knowing that you are not yourself and you actively pursue this notion means you need to change. Change comes in many forms, but the first instinct is You need to change something in your life. Whether it be habits, occupation, people you are around often. YOU HAVE THE POWER. But the actual power is the fact you have a choice how to use it.

True power is the absence of powerlessness Destructive power corrupts probably those with unforgiven traumas, and or a biochemistry of anger.

On the other hand how do I know how corruptible I am if I isolate myself from corruptive influence. For example many people became alcoholics because they weren't exposed to it and when they were later, they lacked control. Some people find out they have to change their surroundings others find out they are strong enough to resist and that's a very important part of knowing oneself in my opinion.

@@jurcik250 You adapt to your environment and social group, it's a pretty simple. If you grow up in a culture that drinks, you will be programmed to think it's ok. You can reprogram, but it will take more effort all your life. Especially if you continue to socialize with people who drink.

In the west they say that money is the root of all evil. But in India they say that there is this kind of person called The Householder. Who has a household and maybe they have power and wealth, but they also have a little bit of every type of person in them, and they spend their power and money and use their house to enable other people to find their bliss.

To correct the adage... "Power [over others] corrupts, absolute power [over others] corrupts absolutely." On the other hand... "Power over oneself purifies, absolute power over oneself glorifies."

"Staying true* with the power that you have, goes hand in hand with not misusing it." - Shi Yeng Hi Staying true is defined as - Admitting when you've made a mistake. - Reflecting on your actions and correcting yourself when you see error. - Cultivating humility and gratitude with concious and routine practice. (He used the example of bowing your head to a statue) That is VASTLY different than "Weakness corrupts." and "STRENGTH OF CHARACTER"
@janfungusamon4926
@janfungusamon4926 Жыл бұрын
When he mentions weakness of character he's referring to one's ability to regulate their behavior. if its weak you'll be corrupted, if it isn't you wont be. This binary is much more simple than reality but it works as a demonstration. the corruption is both from weakness and strength.
