Strength is more cohesive. It is about efficiency. It's about how a particular weight can be moved from pt A to pt B most efficiently. Which means the body will have to function cohesively as one unit. Bodybuilding, OTOH, is trying to deliberately introduce inefficiency so that the target muscles only/mainly do the movement in order for that muscle(s) to hypertrophy... Which is why strength training is more 'functional' for most people, and bodybuilding is mostly focused on aesthetics...There is a considerable overlap, however, all in all, strength training has a larger neural component than bodybuilding style training. And, lastly, one can be built like a Greek God and yet not be as strong as the looks might suggest, while, one may look weak/thin but may be really strong. However, a discussion of absolute vs./and relative strength can be had on some other occasion... 😀

I just barely started a strength training program for a while to change it up, 5x5 program. Takes nearly 2 hours 😅 because of the rest time between sets.
@Fitand50Formula

It takes more time to recover from those heavy compound lifts. I try to keep my rest times between 1:30 and 2 minutes when doing the same exercise, but then I rest extra long before starting the next exercise.

Im glad he said 6 to 20 rep range e. I neen training 30 years and that is now my working rep range. With prob 10 to 15 being most used.
@Fitand50Formula
@Fitand50Formula Жыл бұрын
That's a good range. I still use a broad spectrum of repetitions, favouring 5 to 15 reps.

Strength training is more of a priority because of losing type 1 muscle fibers as we get older. Type 2 loss is for those who do not do anything but just exist. Type 1 has gone, and type 2 atrophy is rapidly taking place.

For sure, protecting our muscle as we age is one of the keys to living a long, active life.

Nicely done! In my experience those who focus more on strength rarely lift to failure in training…closer to a 7 or 8 RPE, but do several sets of 3’s or 5’s or sometimes less and don’t chase fatigue, not that the workouts aren’t hard. Jim Wendlers 5/3/1 is a great variant of that. As one ages I think that training for strength is more important than the bodybuilding side, but either will give you great benefits.

I find not a lot of people are trying to get big, but we still like to improve our aesthetics along with our strength. Strength is what’s going to keep our quality of life high right into our 80’s and 90’s.

I am 56 and I can't deny, I am slowly getting the feeling that I am getting older. Recently (the second time) I experienced during standing biceps curl, some so far unknown pain which I now need to observe very carefully, because it smells somehow like the beginning of a rupture of the abdominal wall or inguinal hernia. According to my information, this will not heal without a surgical operation, which will lead to a (minimum) 3 month's pause (?). In my opinion, this topic should be treated somehow. Think I need to consult my doctor, hope he can tell me something different than "Stop lifting heavy weights!"

If it’s a hernia, you should get it fixed. It’ll be better in the long run.

Why do you want to be physically strong..? Is your car door difficult to open, or is your home door so heavy that you need a lot of strength to open it...? Or are the buttons on your mobile so difficult to press that you need more muscle power..??? Have you thought about why you train and what your goals are..??? Is it really a mental problem..? your imaginations..? Your complexes..? Or is it honest health, and yes, everyone wants to look a little nicer, whether it's clothes, hair hairstyle, or being slim, yes or just being polite to other people..?

I have to admit, at first, I found your post confusing, Hendrik then I laughed. I’ve never thought about the strength I need to open a car door or the one to my home. I live in Canada, and when it snows, I go out and shovel my walk and the neighbours on either side. If my car gets a flat, I fix it. When my house needed a new roof, I stripped off the old shingles and applied the new ones. I don’t think about the strength those tasks need either because I don’t have to.

Men in particular need to be strong. It's important to be a person to be counted on in an emergency, and not useless or even worse: someone needing rescue because they're not as strong as they could be. You hope to never need to be in that position - but we're responsible all the same. Also, knowing that you're strong and fit adds a lot to your mental and emotional well-being.
