Always appreciated how you focus on the importance of strength training. I've met too many coaches who think runners don't need it, and it's sad!

Great video Jason! I have been running for 3 years with little to no activity before this. I have built up to running 30 miles per week on a great week. Most typically 20-25 miles. I had to take a week off due to COVID. This was back in early Jan. Now I’m finding that my fitness is really impaired. Doing a 5 mile run seems like an all out effort. I even have to walk in between. Prior to this a 10 mile long run was fun. Is it possible that I’m regressing with 1 week off? It’s been a little depressing to say the least. Any thoughts you can share are most welcomed.

It's gonna get better trust me. I got covid too and the few weeks after were TOUGH! I went from 50 miles a week to not being able to run 4 mile without feeling like I'm gonna die. But you eventually end up getting your fitness back. Just be patient and don't put too much pressure on yourself, it is almost impossible to lose all your fitness in only one week.

I had covid 4 weeks ago. Started running towards the end of my 8 day isolation and I will say that my endurance has reduced drastically. My V02 max dropped from 65 to 49 which correlates to my reduced endurance and greater cardio effort to sustain what would have been a relatively easy effort. Even today, I would estimate my breathing efficiency to be around 70-75% which again correlates to my run effort and V02 max. All I can say is that it will take time, building up mileage and allowing your body to recover over time. Lastly, listen to what your body is saying and train from there.

@@CCFebruary Thank you for the reply. It is reassuring to hear from experienced runners. It has been a challenge.

Like the others who have replied, I also had covid (no vaccine at all), over Christmas and am building myself back up. It certainly affects everyone differently….I didn’t run a step for 10 days….then for 2 weeks it was maybe 3 miles every other day. Because I needed to climb out of the VO2 max hole and i was easing back in, I hit the strength training harder. Now I am about 6 weeks from recovery, and things are progressing well. Just keep doing what you are doing….those small, daily, incremental gains will pay dividends down the road.

I am 15 year old (boy) .Since my childhood I was really very weak.Since 6 - 7 months I have been doing strength training. But some people said that strength training reduces our speed....is it true..? If not, can I improve my strength and speed simultaneously..?
