Be sure to ask about how it felt after each repetition, and if they had pain, where the pain was located.
Test Procedure:
- Take bilateral grip measurements in standard position
- Re-take bilateral measurements in stressed position:
- Tennis elbow-shoulder flexed to 90° with elbow extended, and forearm pronated
- Golfer’s elbow-shoulder flexed to 90° with elbow extended, and forearm supinated
- Therapist should not support the weight of the dynamometer; use hydraulic dynamometer
- Dial of the dynamometer should be by the client’s thumb in all positions
Positive results:
- More pain and less strength in stressed position vs. standard position. (Weakness and pain in standard grip position is a sign of more severe tennis/golfer’s elbow. Weakness and pain only in stressed grip position is a sign of mild-moderate tennis/golfer’s elbow.)
Negative Results:
- No weakness, no pain in stressed position; pain in extensor muscle bellies indicates Radial tunnel
Implications of positive test result:
- Tennis or golfer’s elbow (depending on which position)
