Stressful Lake District Roads Towing Caravan 😳Insanely narrow!

I thought I'd share how INSANE driving in the UK can sometimes be... particularly if you take the wrong road in the Lake District while towing a caravan 🤦‍♀️While still on a main road the car navigation said I'd arrived with no campground in sight. I had cars behind me, so carried on trying to find a place to pull over.
A village came up so I decided I'd go in there, lap the block, find a place to stop and look at my map before carrying on. Turns out the roads are extremely narrow in this village! That's the start of the video with me squeezing between two buildings. I manage to find a spot to stop and properly find the campground on the gps.
It takes me down this road that gets narrower and narrower... you'll see what it's like in the video. At one point 5 cars needed to reverse to let me through. The road just went on and on. I eventually arrived and was actually shaking 🤯
Turns out the instructions for this campground are to ignore the gps and follow their directions, which is a MUCH easier drive.
The Borrowdale Caravan Club campground is surrounded by trees and feels very private. You can stroll to this lake from the caravan and I hiked the Great Gable walk with a cute stone bridge and amazing views from the top. It really was worth the stress getting here 💛

Don’t worry about head shakes. They’ll have forgotten about it after 5 minutes. Caravans on narrow roads are an occupational hazard in the UK. You live and learn. Borrowdale is stunning and the lakes are beautiful so all is good.

Enjoying your vlog. Sat Nav is great for finding things locally, truly hopeless for route planning. As a sometimes driver of Articulated lorries, I often meet caravaners on single track roads, it can be very interesting. At least you seem to able to reverse, not something that all caravaners can do. If I am taking a HGV into unknown territory I always plan the route on paper using maps and google earth first. I then have a list of road numbers and town names that I can keep an eye on. Keep up the good work and as the grumpy old man said BUY A MAP. People die every year when the weather turns nasty.

Yikes! I’m sure it’s a challenge with meeting caravans on the narrow roads. I’ve seen caravans pop up from the most unexpected roads since this drive. I’ve started pre-planning more and using google maps and writing down main road. And yes, I should have had a walking map 🤭

Hi Karen. What a nightmare for you and have been in exactly the same situation when I first had my caravan, having never towed before. I now use co-pilot caravan GPS on my phone because it is fully adjustable in regard to the size of rig you have. My dedicated sat nav would send me on entirely unsuitable roads, as would google maps. Co-pilot allows you to put in vehicle details and caravan dimensions which then adjusts the routing accordingly. Loving this series, lots of places I'd love to visit. Take care, x

Buy yourself a roadmap from a petrol station and then you can plan better with the satellite navigation system. Also drive early hours in the morning. Like set off a two or three in the morning when hardly anyone's around. Less stress that way.

Well done with those roads. Can be a bit intimidating if you're not used to them even without a large caravan behind.Just hope you're not thinking of heading to Devon or Cornwall this time of year, some very serpentine and tiny roads with 10X the traffic once you're off the main drag. Hope the rest of your stay is less stressful, Happy Holiday!

@d0rraj What's moronic about Shane Youngs comment? It's fact - the roads around there were never built for the traffic they handle today and i've heard quite a few people complaining about them. What's your non-moronic solution? drive a dual carriageway through the area or ban tourists?
@TicketyBoo.
@TicketyBoo. 5 жыл бұрын
@d0rraj Can't disagree with that. As K mentioned, there was routing advice in the site brochure that would have avoided these narrow roads but she hadn't read it. I have a satnav that lets me enter my car and caravan dimensions in advance, i'm keen to test it out and see if it would have taken me a better route. Ah - the joys of motoring.

Hate caravans. Why not hire a holiday home for a week? If you're going to tow something around all week then you should buy a lorry atlas or satnav a d stop clogging up the roads you're not supposed to be anywhere near. I am considerate to truckers and farmers on narrow country roads; they are working. Caravaners are arrogant people who want half the contents of their house with them everywhere they go. They don't respect other people's rights to roadspace so I don't respect them.

That was such an entertaining video Karen. I have mentioned before getting a map, I'm almost tempted to go out and buy you one myself, :-) you also, to be on the safe side need a map when your walking the fells in the lake district, less chance of getting lost. Having said that, not having a map certainly adds to the entertainment value. You deserve a lot of praise though, I've been to the lakes lots of times, not sure I would want to drive around there towing a caravan though, despite the stress, well done you for doing it.

Understand your reaction. You were on the west side of the lake, which many UK caravanners know has "quaint" narrow roads that are not differentiated by GPS, even those that claim to restrict your route to roads with sifficient width. But the Caravan Club book, if you are a member you should have one, explains how to reach sites that are afflicted by narrow roads or busy locations. We've all made your mistake. Don't lose heart.

A bit of friendly .. but serious advice ... NEVER go on the Fells (hills) by yourself if you are inexperienced ..... always let someone know where you are going and when to expect you to be back ..... take a map and a compass and know how to use them ... what you did going alone .. and not knowing where you were going and the route to take was foolhardy and rather stupid - and never wear trainers on the fells ... you need stout shoes or proper walking boots ! Mountain rescue teams must be sick and tired of rescuing ill prepared walkers on the Fells ... who have no idea of the dangers or what they are doing ! ... Other than that ... nice video !
@TravellingK

@@TravellingK The weather can turn quite quickly on the hills and I have seen idiots in tee shirts , shorts and sandals - and no extra warm clothing whatsoever and I used to be in a mountain rescue team and many times we were called out to people who had put themselves in a dangerous position because they wandered from the path - because they had no map or compass - if possible always go with someone or join another group of people - so if something terrible happens - someone can go for help ! ... just be careful ... I would hate to hear you had become another fell casualty and just another statistic - the hills are beautiful in fine weather ... but can turn treacherous if a mist comes down and you get lost ! ... Please NEVER attempt to walk Striding Edge on Helvellyn .. that can be lethal to the inexperienced !

@@ripghyll said "if possible always go with someone". You know, for some of us much of the point of a lone walk is to for peace, quiet and our own company. I'll take the risk of being a "casualty" in exchange for what to some of us an essential part of life. I agree about maps, but I walked up many mountains in gym shoes as a teen; my parents could not afford special boots.

I was getting stressed just watching that - you're much braver than I am! You made it (big pat on the back from you to you!), there's no harm done and some good learnings too. I just wonder if your Sat Nav is set to "shortest" and not "fastest"? Also, a road map book (cheap as chips from any garage/petrol station) is an essential purchase here, as is an understanding of the road classification system (not difficult). Finally, even if you're already on top of those items (as you may well be, so apologies in advance for the egg-sucking lessons!), it's just a fact that the smaller roads in the countryside were there before the car and were not designed for anything wider than a cart. I'm thoroughly enjoying following your progress and hope this little episode hasn't coloured things for you. Fair winds.

My late wife and I stayed at a tiny self-contained apartment in Windermere, and a little 8-seater bus took us through "All Creatures Great and Small" country. Fortunately, I decided NOT to rent a car and was spared the nightmare of those crazy roads with hedges so high you can't see who's coming. I love your vlog and admire your courage in doing what you're doing. These are memories you will carry throughout your life. Well done. John, Ontario, Canada.

I live just west of the Lake District National Park and even in an ordinary car with no caravan, I avoid most of the Lake District like the plague in July and August. We have a medium sized camper too and would not try taking that in there until this time of year. You were so brave ! Pete

The majority off the old towns and villages in the UK are 100s of years old. The roads are the same roads as when they were using horse and carts they have just been paved its just something you have to get used to in a country that is so old.

GPS is a driving nightmare, K. Anyone driving something bigger than a Golf should be very wary. I have been a professional driver for over 40 years in Australia, so we are almost neighbours. My advice is to ALWAYS obtain decent maps for where you are going and research your route PRIOR to setting out. Even the dedicated GPS mapping services, like Sygic, TomTom or Garmin will get it wrong, and often do. Google and Apple maps are rubbish unless you are in NYC or California. They will improve I guess. I say this because I have seen SO many people in trouble using GPS. I drove a 26 metre long, 4.6 metre high B-Double truck. If I trusted my GPS I would have been in a world of hurt and fines. The way to avoid the stress you have been through here is to do your homework and above all, DO NOT TRUST TECHNOLOGY. Trust your eyes instead, learn to read paper maps, learn which maps to trust, and the shortest way ( GPS ) isn't always the best. AND, don't be afraid to drop your van and go and look if you aren't sure. The only REAL use for GPS mapping for ordinary people is to find out where you ARE, not to tell you how to get somewhere else. Sorry, I rant a bit about navigation. I was taught in the Army, I lived in my professional life, and I have been seriously inconvenienced by people who can't be bothered. It is so simple to learn.

I give the place a wide berth during the school holidays! Better to visit just before or just after, I'm going early September, you wouldn't believe the difference. I've been going all my life since the early 70's and it's got really silly in the last 20 years since the rest of the world has discovered it.

@@TravellingK It's a real shame, we're a small island and everybody who has kids has to go on holiday at the same time, it makes for very crowded holiday resorts. Throw in coach loads of American, Chinese and Japanese and the place is no longer idilic like it was when i was a kid

Good report and such good weather. foreign lorry drivers often use a sat nav/GPS with settings for a car, so they end up completely wedged and trapped against a building, I'm very surprised nobody advised you about using proper, detailed ordnance survey maps, these are important for hiking/cycling/walking, the Lake District is beautiful, but can be dangerous too, 13 deaths since 2016, people take a fall, but don't know where they are, it makes getting help more difficult.

Hi “Travelling K”, looks like some challenging roads. I especially liked the part when you passed the bus and swore, then bleeped it out. Myself and my wife Karen will being doing our 7th trip across the ditch to NZ, in September. We will be driving an EV camper (electric vehicle camper) down around Rotorua. This could be a good idea for a video in the future, only problem is you would have to pickup/hire the EV camper from Auckland. We are hiring our EV camper through “Your Drive” (Jucy car rentals). And no will are not affiliated with Jucy or Your Drive. Cheers Shane and Kaz

This is exactly why I have a Trucker GPS. You can enter your vehicle type and dimensions and it will only choose routes where you fit. This is critical when your class A is 42'10" (plus the car trailer) x 8'6" x 12'.

You did well. Followed my sat nav today going to Black Horse Farm near Dover. Mistake of my life went through 4 miles of single track lanes no option to turn around or abort, was towing an 8’ wide caravan lost a towing mirror and got some minor scratches on van which should polish out. I’ll never trust a sat nav again😬
