No matter how many times I think I have ‘completed’ pentatonics, someone comes along with a totally fresh take. 11/10 for ST reference too.

I know, What about the Pentatonic Minor Chromatic Blues scale. It is a regular minor blues scale but you add the major third too. And you can use what is left over for passing tones. lol That should cover them all!

@@beachbarlouie Excellent point! I’ve learned so much from channels like this one, and the respective comments section too. Truly a golden age of sharing ideas. Rob, of the QJamTracks KZbin channel blew my ears wide open with his ‘Exotic Pentatonics’ upload. Between Dave and Rob’s channels, I feel like I’m going through a musical renaissance. 🤯

Seen and heard Holdsworth take advantage of the unison Pentatonic notes many times. Thanks for breaking these concepts down.

Takes a lot of work to get the pinky stretch. Best to take it slow at first and gradually build up speed. It can sound a bit mechanical unless mixed with more melodic phrases. Michael Schenker does this better than anyone else in my humble opinion. Thanks for another great lesson and application of the pentatonic scale! 🤩

Fantastic lesson again. The stretch ideas are very akin to Frank Gambale's Pentatonic shapes he uses by combining adjacent boxes for sweeping. After this lesson trifecta David, one thing that struck me was leaning the new box is made difficult as guitarists have trouble visualizing intervals. Is identifying and visualizing intervals a basis for a future lesson?

Hey and don't forget you can move this stuff higher (to make it easier to grab) and once you get a hang of it and your hand gets used to it, then you can move them down and stretch further. Move higher on the neck, go slow, and eventually you'll get them. Good luck!

This may blow your mind if you haven't heard of it; you can use the R, 3, #4, 5 & 7 of Lydian (Lydian Pentatonic). You can do the same with Locrian ( R, b3, 4, b5, b7)....and Ionian (R, 3, 4, 5, 7). #stretchcitybaby

Admission/Disclaimer: I've been noodling for quite a while and have never put any serious practice into this. But, I've got big hands (I think). 10.25 inches from thumbtip to pinkytip when opened wide. Yet, when I try that combo Dm-two-position scale, I can't believe your pinky just sits up there all natural like!!! My pinky suddenly looks like it belongs to a small hand!!! :)

A large percentage of players will find it uncomfortable to the point of uselessness to deal with stretch pentatonics where the root is at the 6th or lower fret 6th/1st string.
@LateNightLessons5 ай бұрын
That's a good point, and once you've reached the limit of your frethand stretching ability - don't forget about tapping. Eddie Van Halen admitted several times that when he couldn't quite stretch to hit some of the sounds he heard Holdsworth playing, he started tapping those higher notes to grab those wider intervallic sounds. So if you can't stretch it - tap it! Good luck and ROCK ON!
@janezimmerman79875 ай бұрын
@@LateNightLessons EVH might not have had Holdsworth's large stretch but he still had decent span. Of course, his most famous stretchy was the 12 to 19 stretch in Beat It, Ice Cream Man, and a few others. I might be mistaken but I think that width (equivalent to 5 to ~10) was about the extent of what he used on stage. But he could absolutely nail it. He wasn't a very big guy at all. In my humble book, he's the king despite there being more technically advanced players. He was a pure and true musician. But I digressed. Yes, go for what you can however you can. It's all good snd should be fun.
