Auto detailer checking in, and also one of the folks that recommended Ozone. Yes, it can degrade plastics - but really only with prolonged exposure with high concentrations. Ozone shocking is commonly used in detailing for exactly what Jeff is suffering from, and cars far worse than Jeff trying to recover from amounts of mould that would write off the vehicle. Full blast blowers with recirculation on, and leaving the generator in (nothing too wiley, I use a 6000mg one) for about an hour and giving it about the same amount of time to air out will set him straight.

On the topic of ozone. Yes, it will damage plastics, but only with prolonged exposure. Leaving it to sit around in a car for a day or two is very unlikely to cause any damage. I have an American ford from the same era that most likely has very similar material formulations, and it has been perfectly fine with the few hours worth of ozone it was exposed to. Like Jeff, my vehicle was extremely stinky, and now (while not perfect) is more than tolerable.

Check fault codes if you can, messed up o2 sensors and knock sensors can do insane harm to fuel economy. Might even be worth testing or just replacing them anyway, couple hundred bucks that you will probably save after a few tanks of fuel. I think my NL fairlane got 12-15L/100km highway driving only.

More advanced, worth checking injector spray pattern, new injectors can do wonders to 80's/90's EFI, not just economy but starting/driving/power gains all around its insane.

@@Mitchd03 what id do with any old nugget: Shock treatment with injector cleaner. A full tank with 2x or 3x the recommended dosage will make any fuel system work like it just rolled of the factory floor. Works absolute wonders on Diesels. I recently did that to a 2007 Volvo Diesel and fuck me its so quiet when idling and driving with low throttle you barely even know its an old diesel. Zero diesel knock and it starts up amazingly well for a diesel that only activates the glow plugs if its below freezing and has 250.000 Kilometers with bad maintenance and bad oil on it. The fucking idiots at Volvo want you to run 0w30 and change every 30.000 Kilometers which is insane for this engine. Its got 0w40 in it now for the winter and it will get 5w40 or 10w40 next spring as the summer oil. I change every 6 months or 10.000km at the latest. With some of the new downsized turbocharged direct injected petrol engines you cant go further than 5000 Kilometers on the same oil and they still recommend like 15.000 or 20.000 Km intervalls.

@@alouisschafer7212 depends. If it sat for a long time with bad fuel it could do a lot. I tried that on two vehicles, diesel and petrol, and it didn't do anything. There were other issues like a worn out fuel pump or engine. Also check fuel pressure, change filter, check OBD codes, fuel trims, clean the throttle body and IAC, clean any idle air nozzles, replace deteriorated or cracked intake or breather hoses, check for vacuum leaks, check or replace spark plugs.

They really seem to gum up a lot here in our cold climate and with lots of short trips and people only ever buying the cheapest diesel they can find that has no additives in it. Premium diesel has cleaner in it but 1. its very diluted and 2. people rarely pay the extra money.

Hope you'll see this I highly recommend closet charcoal deodorizers get like two of those puppies and toss one in the back and one in the front and let it sit overtime and usually they neutralize most smells, got a car secondary that was cleaned but still had remnant cigarette smell and as a non smoker I went on a mission to rid it so I deep cleaned and it was still slight so I tossed the deodorizers in for a few weeks and cycled them once and no more smell.

2:27 you can take the seat cover off and swap it with the passenger. They're generally not directional (except for some of the more high end, luxury ones). It's also super easy if you have a basic set of tools, which you do. Oh... i'd get the panel clip pliers and a set of of those clips, but that may not be necessary. Most modern cars use rods to secure the seat covers, for easy installation at the factory. At least most of the cars i've done this to, always did.

First off love the channel keep doing what you’re doing. Secondly bought a 20 year old car. Did everything you did and more to a car. Still had this strange smell. Ended up pulling up the carpet to sand down any surface rust on the floor pan with a rust preventative primer. Anyways the insulation fabric attached to the bottom of the carpet was soaked even though the carpet side when you’re in the car was dry. Ripped it out, put sound insulation down and the smell hasn’t come back in the humid summers. 10/10 would recommend as a further step if anyone’s in the same boat.

I think you should do a thourough cleaning of the ac/vent system or check if the car has any water leaks inside. My mate’s prelude was leasing through the bootlid seal (pretty common issue on those) and it had a simillar old man smell.

Being an 90s V8 Ford, I would check that the Cats aren't blocked and the O2 sensors are working proper good, plus clean the throttle body. My brother has an ED Fairmont wagon with the 5L and had bad fuel consumption because of these things. For reference he gets 10-12L/100km on the open road, and about 13-15 if he has to drive around in town.

The Bathurst cars in the 70s had monster 200L drop tanks. They basically filled the boot space, plus hung down low enough to obscure any view of the differential. For the smell, try your best to spray Lysol as far as you can into the HVAC intake duct. Removing the blower motor and spraying it there is what most mechanics do. As for the seats: remove the upholstery and put them through the washing machine. They will shrink slightly, getting rid of the stretch and sag! I did it to my 93 Jeep, and the covers look and fit like brand new.

A little pro tip for interior cleaning I use super clean degreaser spray on the car seats and scrub for awhile then I leave it to soak while I’m doing the other seat and cold water in the carpet cleaner and I go over it until there’s barely any soap on the seats. At the end they turn out so nice. Test a small spot before using the degreaser

Could be the cabin air filter. I know ford cheaped out at one point and just straight up didn't include them with the car, but had a spot for them. I know that's the case with my 04 ford escape (maverick). They make filters with febreeze on the filter itself

It's not a whole lot of work to pull the carpets out. Pull the seats and some plastic trim. I did that, then washed the carpets with laundry detergent by hand, then flushed it with a pressure washer. Cleaned the floor with windex as there was some spilled liquid residue. Wiped down all the hard surfaces with alcohol to get the nicotine tar off. Took off a door card and washed it with a pressure washer as it had liquid residue inside the pocket. Had the seats deep cleaned just like you did. After that the smell was gone. If it smells like ammonia (piss) it's likely drug or vomit residue. Of course replace the cabin air filter just as a precaution. If that doesn't work, you can ozone bomb it like others already said. If there's stuff inside the air vents you could disassemble the dash and take the air vents out for cleaning but that's a whole load more work.

this reminds me of when in middleschool (ages 11-13) I used to get picked up by an after school program, and one day one of the elementary kids accidentally left a half empty milk carton in the van over either a weekend or holiday break. Regardless, it fucking made it REEK. As far as I know it hadn't even spilt in the van, but somehow that was enough to leave a suffocating, embedded rotten milk smell in it for the next year, and five days a week everyone had to endure the horrors.
