To be honest, the way that Other Ocean treats the graveyard guardians is more interesting and tragic. The PS4 guardians are said to be the protectors and gate keepers of the graveyard, making sure that everything dead stays within the boundaries of the graveyard where as in the PS1 version, the guardians are described as evil. I feel that the PS4 version does the graveyard guardians justice by describing them as protectors rather then evil monsters. You really feel like you’re doing something bitter sweet by defeating them because even though you have to fight them to pass the gate into the open world of Gallowmere, this also opens Gallowmere up to be even further invaded by the dead. Sir Dan really does seem to have to make a lot of tough choices throughout the game and it’s definitely felt

It was one of my favourite games in the late 90s, mostly for that Tim Burtonish flavour and designs. And Gallowmer definitely felt like a place one could have further expanded and explored. I was not a fan of the earlier remake (the balance between humor and creepiness was lost in favour of the first), but the newer is something that seems to make justice to Dan and Gallowmere overall, although I think you were on spot regarding the cutscenes and designs of Zarok and the Glass Demon.

Legacy of Kain and Medievil are 2 of my favourite games, I especially love the design in medievil. The way the world is presented, as well as the cutscenes gives the game its unique thematic charm, but also makes it seem bigger than it actually is, like the dragon during the cutscene between "The Haunted Ruins" and "The Ghost Ship", or all the history we're presented with which makes Gallowmere seem like an actual world rather than the box the game takes place in. I agree that the remake lost a bit of it's charm due to some exaggerated animations and character traits. as well as some shortcuts. Half the ending seemed to be missing, Zarok trying out different creatures was cut down, and Imani Shingama was cut to bits. I thought Sir Dan getting scared by her flirtatious suggestions was hillarious. Also, Cemetery Hill is by far my favourite game soundtrack. The remake version was a bit of a letdown for me. In any case, keep up the excellent work mr. Fantasy, I absolutely love your content. Edit: might I add props to the developers for adding the original game as an unlockable, that was a pleasent surprise.

I feel like the remake didn't do the mausoleum justice in general, the original was very dark and torn, walls crumbling floors a mess, and all only lit by the orange of that surrounding torches. The remake looks a lot more colorful and well kept which dilutes the level, as well as the drawbacks from the demon you mentioned before. He was way more terrifying beforehand for sure and his grand entrance leaves much more of an impact, even if everything going black was probably just so they can hide the fact they were swapping the map. The ant caves were also done way worse, probably in response to people's complaints about the maze like structure and inability to see. Making it more colorful and changing the music completely really sucks out all of the dread from a level I personally find overhated. I also want to bring attention to Entrance Hall, another level people clown on because of how easy it is, but I feel like people miss the point. It's a breather before the final confrontation and after the platforming HELL that was the ghost ship, it's a place where you explore what your nemesis has been up to for the last century in the very first room you see in the entire game. It brings the entire game full circle before the battle and I adore it as a result.

You would think Zarok wandering into a graveyard with a wrought-iron underpass bearing the name "Fortesque' would be enough of a hint not to cast resurrection spells there. But, he had nothing to fear from Sir Dan the first time around. Maybe Zarok didn't care if he got resurrected or not. Still, a beautiful game that was my first experience on the PS1. I remember being so anxious to get back to this game on the weekends. These chilly, grey fall days still make me think of this game.

The biggest issue with the original wasn't the visual effects, but the controls. Being an early 3d platformer you often struggled against the controls and the camera more than the game itself. I will always remember a tricky ledge that took a near max jump distance, and the camera reversed directions mid jump. Pretty bad when movement controls were tied to camera directions.

I am so glad you mentioned the opening cutscene and the stained glass demon! I felt like I was the only one who felt like the original did those two parts in particular, much better. The rest of the game has a fantastic aesthetic and I don't really mind the other changes, but those two I thought were a downgrade. I thought Zarok's design in general in the remake was a little too cartoonish and I always preferred the more frail and sinister looking version. The stained glass demon I was very much looking forward to, I especially love in the original how he screams and falls down and then shatters into glass. The sound work, especially for a PS1 game was astounding, and the remake it fell pretty flat.
@glenngriffon80322 жыл бұрын
Remakes tend to fall flat because the original game is working with limitations. Creativity is a response to restrictions. Remakes have none of those restrictions and they're usually made by fans who want to add in details they think they remember from playing the game but weren't there, or details that they believe will enhance the scene. Thing is, and I will die on this hill, the now dated graphics of the PS1 era help add to the charm of the game. I'm not saying that no PS1 games will ever benefit from enhanced graphics but what I am saying is that the old textures and models and lighting are part of the flavor of the games. The original Spyro for example, there's a quaintness to the world that just isn't there in the remake. The remake has it's own, different flavor. AM2R is an example of a great remake that adds a lot to the original and while it's an excellent game its flavor very different. It's a difference between having buttered noodles, and fettuccine alfredo and spaghetti with meatballs. They're all good dishes but if you're in the mood for just some plain, simple, uncomplicated buttery noodles and you're given a plate of spaghetti and meatballs with an orchestra of overlapping different flavors coming at you you're not going to happy. You walked into this scenario unprepared and got hit in the back. And that is how many remakes fall flat. They're a five star chef of high cuisine trying to make some simple, down home, mama's cooking but they layer on flavor after flavor after flavor because that's what they know. That's what they like. That's what they do well. It's not really a bad game, it just doesn't match up to that nice original flavor because the same restrictions aren't there.

Do you know something I like about the world of MediEvil? Everything seems to be legends, the truth about the History of Gallowmere is potentially whatever you believe it could have been. Some said that Sir Daniel had a genie stuck in his head (referencing the PSP remake), but that might as well be one of the many tales of a far greater hero than Fortesque actually was. Then there's that hidden bit of lore from the 2019 remake claiming that Zarok got into necromancy because he dreamed of resurrecting his lost puppy, but that might also be just a rumor. It must have been fun to be a citizen in London during the Victorian Age and discuss the events surrounding the adventures of Sir Daniel Fortesque (until Zarok's spells are cast again, in which case it sucks to be in England)

I really think it would be good if the VideoGames set of (MEDIEVIL) could be made into a computer-animated show series. I can imagine a scenario, in which the beginning of the show, a voice-over says in an unknown dimension, magic exists everywhere, and one day on a planet a war breaks out, amongst the group of soldiers, and wizards fighting against the evil army. There is a man named (Dave) who is trying his best at fighting against the enemy, but he ends up being the third person who dies before a few others dies in the battle. And yet the story about certain details about (Dave) get changed do to either putty, or do to a misunderstanding, but despite that DVAE is given a genuine respectable funeral. But then eight years later the evil Wizard, who was leader of the evil army, he is mysteriously still alive, even though everyone thought he had died in the war, and he is making his plan for both revenge, and for another try at conquering the entire world.
