As always, excellent explanations! I'm sort of new to your channel and now you're one of my favorites! I'm a 49 year old climber from Connecticut and was mostly old school, mainly, I had nobody to teach me SRT, climbing gear etc... I broke down a couple of years ago and now I'm climbing SRT, bought and use rigging rings, and all sorts of climbing gear. A new spark was ignited in me for this industry and I haven't looked back! I look forward to the daily challenges and different ways to climb and work in trees. This is an amazing life we get to have, loving our jobs no matter how awful some days can be lol! Thanks for all the time you out into your vids! I appreciate you!

Ive been using the same Singing Tree Quickie that I use for canopy anchors on a butterfly knot. But im glad to have seen this as I will now add that extra butterfly just above the anchor.

Option #4: stack up every mattress and couch cushion under the tree and hope for the best.

I usually use a minimalist set up for B.A, running bowline with a Yosemite finish. Putting a fisherman's knot in the tail is a great idea, 👍😁🌲🇮🇪

I’m with you there, simple is great ! I still find I typically use the method with the ring and carabiner it’s almost as easy but comes apart so nice and easy in an emergency too.

@@Stridertrees Indeed, I usually climb ddrt/mrs but I've done some srt/srs climbing. I'm in that transitional phase between the two. I have a R.W and find it very smooth and predictable. A B.A I find is nice for pruning decidious trees with spreading canopies. I have my eye on the Z.Z Plus, 👍😁🌲🇮🇪

@@Stridertrees Do you use a steel karabiner for your B.A anchor with the ring? Danger of cross loading and such, those quickie connectors seem to be nice.
@Stridertrees
@Stridertrees 4 жыл бұрын
TheToolnut no I don’t use steel it won’t side load as long as it’s put through the ring the correct way. good luck with the transition to SRS it certainly takes some time to get comfortable and the ZZplus and RW makes for a very smooth combo if you decide to go with that. Ddrt still has its place and I’m sure you’ll never stop using that as well.

Awesome! I go for the third option. It will save you time in case of that emergency.

Just a couple of observations... Your second example fails the whistle test. At any point in a rescue you MUST be able to let go of the rope without the climber falling to the ground. In the 3rd example with the TAZ you should tie a stopper knot immediately below the TAZ so there is no way the rope can pass thru the TAZ without untying the knot.

Would there not be any reason to connect to the butterfly on the second basal anchor and attach to your personal belay device to lower the individual in a very controlled manner? You could even pre weight it with your body weight and remove some line tension to disconnect the original carabiner away from the ring? Just thinking out loud!

Rescue with the wrap on the tree: you’d have to be careful in the rush to make sure the wrap you put at the base isn’t canceled out by an opposite wrap on the climbing line?
@Stridertrees
@Stridertrees 4 жыл бұрын
You’re exactly right and I probably should have made a bigger deal about that. With two wraps you’d be ok either way but that is a challenge

Quick question can you cross load a mallion for srt, alpine butterfly anchor, I am afraid if I use rope on rope that would be to much friction and the rope could snap. Cheers

As someone who also does rock climbing, petzl makes a grigri and on option 3 looks like you could also use a grigri.
@ButterBallTheOpossum
@ButterBallTheOpossum 3 жыл бұрын
The Grigri doesn't have the ANSI certification for an arborist to use. I think Petzl makes a super expensive GriGri on steroids that is for firefighters/search and Rescue/ Arborist that's ANSI certified but it's like $400

I like option 2, I'd like 3, but I don't own a rig. Just curious, what's wrong with a bowline ?

I use a running bowline for everything almost. Evidently that's not officially kosher? I'm curious as to why
@Stridertrees
@Stridertrees 4 жыл бұрын
2 main reasons. 1. It reduces the strength of the rope by roughly 25%(give or take depending on rope type, and what research you’re looking at) and 2. When repeatedly loaded and Unloaded it can work itself free fairly easily.

Not telling you to keep using one, however I’ve done so and just tie a figure 8 knot in case the tail on the bowline would loosen that figure 8 knot would jam it up. But maybe that’s still not a great idea, I felt confident with it and never had an issue myself

Strider Trees You can also add the Yosemite lock onto the bowline and if done properly it will stop the bowline from coming undone.

NIcely done. I set an alpine butterfly like that and I leave a rigging line beside the tree so a rescuer doesnt have to find gear, just tie in and lower me.

I’m not down with the whole jamming a caribiner through a smaller ring concept, it looks like over time it’s putting stress where the caribiner shouldn’t be loaded.

Carabiners aren't rated in that fashion. Have you ever seen a test of a Carabiner where it's loaded in ways it wasn't intended? They fail suprisingly easily. Seems like a steel quick link would be a much safer option if no part of it can pass through the ring
