I am one of those grateful people who watches the entire walk along the edge because I know it is the ONLY way I will ever experience it as I have an extremely healthy terror of heights and sheer drops. I love fell walking, I love the exhilaration of getting to the top and being rewarded with views for days. But only on nice paths that don’t offer instant death on either side.

For anyone planning a first trip along the edges that should be essential viewing. The loose rock bit reminded me (as if I could forget) of grabbing a rock on Sharp Edge which promptly came away in my hand. At least Birkhouse Moor has a good view. I suspect we won't hear the 'gorgeous' word when you get to Mungrisdale Common! Seriously though your work is not just instructional it is elevated to brilliant by your engaging and friendly disposition.

Hello Glenn. I've been enjoying a couple of your videos. You've done a fantastic job. The video quality is excellent, audio too. I'm assuming that's the GoPro 10 and Rode mic? I just got the 11 and I'm thinking about the media mod. May I offer a bit of advice? I've a hairstyle like your own! :D Always, always, ALWAYS wear a cap, even when it's overcast. I loved your comment about the 3rd arm, lol. I live in Western South Dakota, USA, which is cowboy country. I'm a pretty self sufficient woman and was installing new wiper blades on my van on a snowy day, when a cowboy came up to me, shoved me out of the way and installed the blades for me. Later, I was telling my sister about "the stupid cowboy" and then commented about why we don't have 4 arms and she said "its so we learn to accept help from stupid cowboys". Lol. What a burn.

My partner an I (59F, 62M) 'ummed and ahhed' about whether we should attempt Striding Edge and/or Swirral, but decided instead to assend Helvelyn via Dolly Wagon Pike and descend via White Side and Glenridding Common (we were staying in Patterfdale) - that is a 14mile route but a lot safer! Too old for risk now!

You get to do the awesome scramble that is tryfan north ridge and down the south side and then up glyder fawr via Sinister and Dexter Gully. Ridiculous exposure, a grade 3 scramble with no escape routes but not too difficult. Look it up brilliant scramble routes. I've been up and and it's amazing. Isn't the summit of Birkhouse Moor halfway along the ridge by the wall at 718m? The cairn you showed at the end of the ridge, known as the North Top, is only 700m, hence why it's seldom visited.

Wainwright picked Birkhouse moor as one of his 214 due to the view of helvellyn from there, most of ones he picked was for the views from them, that’s why there is a few strange ones in it. Brilliant video love the edge 👌

Great footage of the ridge itself. Excellent. As an aside, I'm not sure that cairn there is the true summit of Birkhouse Moor. I think it's some distance before in the direction you'd come from. As you say though, a great view, and be why Wainwright included it.

For some reason I couldn't get this to open when it first posted, hence the late comment. Superb section on the Edge itself, I lacked that final bit of courage to do that instead of the path. I'm not going to challenge your opinion on Birkhouse Moor but it was on its summit, and then all the way to Catstycam that I chatted to this elderly walker. something he said on Catstycam made me wonder and I got confirmation from his next Guardian Country Diary, that I'd been talking to Harry Griffin. Miss his Country Diary so much.

Great, really enjoying this Wainwright series and this was the best film I've seen of what is involved in tackling The Edges. Also very much enjoyed seeing the still at the end, great pics. One thought. I suspect many people watching this Wainright's series, like me know about the Wainright's, but don't necessarily know all 214, so a quick tick off at the start or the end of what you've done would help viewers keep track as you progress, either on that particular walk or as a running total.

Really helpful to see the whole route across both edges - something I've not seen on a video before, so thanks for including that. I've not yet plucked up courage to do either, although I've been fellwalking for 30 years. I think the climb down the chimney at the end of Striding Edge would defeat me but might be able to manage 'up', so it was especially good to see you film it that way round. Great channel and superb idea to do the Wainwrights. I've still got about 20 to go.

Another fantastic episode and doing it in two parts definitely did both ridges justice. I did the edges for the first time at Christmas on a crisp winters day it was to date the best days hike I’ve been on. It took me so long to get across Striding edge due to the amount of photos I ended up taking 😃 absolutely loved it. I’m going to show this to my eldest because you capture it perfectly and I think it would convince her to come across with me. Also the floopy feet I can relate too, I had them last week coming down Ben Nevis, I got almost down to the bottom and went over on my ankle on the smallest of steps, just goes to show what fatigue can do to you. Looking forward to the next instalment. 👌🏼
