Hi Glenn. That was a dramatic ending, worthy of a soap opera. Literally a cliffhanger. I hope that you are O.K. It was interesting to see the route done in the opposite way to usual. So many of the walks in the Lakes seem to have an “accepted” direction to follow. You get a totally different perspective by varying it. Helvellyn is such a majestic mountain and your footage showed it off brilliantly. I am really enjoying the series. Thank you.

As amusing as it is to see you take the occasional tumble 😏 try and keep it shiny side up on the pointy stuff🤭 looking forward to part 2. I enjoyed the forward facing camera on the tricky stuff. Another great instalment Glenn. Last year I went up Swirral Edge to the summit; the weather & visibility near the top were really poor so we collectively decided to avoid either of the edges going down and take the long route back to Glenridding via Grizedale Tarn. Anyway it was really misty coming down and it wasn’t until we were near the bottom before I could see water. Unfortunately I quickly realised the water was Thirlmere and not Grizedale Tarn. The resulting taxi drive back to Glenridding from Thirlmere cost £50. After that episode I quickly decided to invest in the OS app realising it could potentially one day be a life saver. Keep ‘em coming Glenn 👍🏻
@BlackCrag2 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much mate, really pleased you enjoyed it! 🙌 What a nightmare that is but you've given me an idea. If this doesn't work out I'm going to be a taxi driver and just hang around Thirlmere..... I bet that happens a lot! 😂
@jonm49892 жыл бұрын
@@BlackCrag funny enough whilst we were waiting for the taxi to arrive three students turned up who’d made exactly the same mistake as us. Luckily for them the taxi was a 6 seater and we gave them a free ride back to Glenridding. You could be onto something with that idea, lol.

We went up swirral edge last week and I was surpsired how exposed and tricky the last scramble was to say its supposed to be the easier route, although it's not difficult compared to what you can do of course but it was really fun.

Hi Glenn, I don't think the path from the summit of Catsye Cam actually meets the main path (yet), it just fizzles out further down. Until a few years ago the path fizzled out a lot higher up but greater use has extended it downwards. No doubt it will meet up with the main path in the near future and a small cairn might be built at the junction. Message over, now for part 2 🙂 - I just love, love, love Striding Edge, in either direction.

Be interesting to do it the opposite way round. That walk up to the hole in the wall from Glenridding isn't fun and by the time you get to striding edge your shattered 😅 I'd like to do it going over striding edge up to Helvellyn and then go the opposite way up to Fairfield and back down over St Sunday Crag. Oh Lord, the memories. Standing on top of Catstycam comparing notes with an elderly but robust walker on where we were heading next. I said I was 'collecting'. '2,000 footers?' he asked, eagerly, but when I said 'Wainwrights' his companion laughed and said 'Oh dear!' Immediately I suspected, but I had to wait two weeks, until his next Guardian Country Diary beforefinding out that, yes, I was talking to Harry Griffin. And I couldn't believe Helvellyn with no walkers on top at all.One time I got there through nearly 400 feet of cloud to find the wall-shelter almost full and in all the time I sat there, not once did thirty seconds pass without one or two more walkers looming up through the mist.
@BlackCrag2 жыл бұрын
Oh, that would have been a funny and slightly awkward moment 😂 Don't think he was a huge fan of 'Wainwrights' in the guidebook sense. He'd probably detest these videos 😂
@MBC19552 жыл бұрын
@@BlackCrag Oh, he certainly wasn't. He thought Wainwright's books guided people too much, keeping them from exploring and making their own routes. Actually, our paths had crossed three or four times over half an hour, and we'd been chatting in a friendly manner. It was only when I said the W word that he kind of snorted...
