😅 I was a new player caught in between- introduced on the promise of the old setting by a friend and his Dad’s old codices, and found myself in the new setting of Primaris marines and innovation and rather lacking artwork- only to discover, through buying old second-hand models and 90’s artwork and books, and through meeting gracious old players who had been playing since before I was born, the depth of what I had missed out on and what had changed. Thankfully, caught between eras and with much of the art, stories of old players and tales of the good old days, I have learned much and will carry the old soul of the setting in my heart, no matter what GW does or changes going forward- but I have seen the despair and quiet sadness in the old players, though they try to hide it for the sake of us new players who don’t know any better, holding our Primaris marines and Cawl-pattern bolt rifles. Now, with the rise of 3D printing bringing back to life- and scale- the beloved designs of old, I will hope to keep the flame and soul of what was alive, no matter what GW does going forward. But I think I now have an inkling of the old player’s anger and grief, at what beautiful storytelling has been destroyed :( So much has been lost, never to be relearned...

In the first weeks of my introduction (this was the age of Primaris, and were all I could see on the web store), I was puzzled by the Astartes animation creator’s statement ‘this is a story set before the modern lore- it is not because I hate the Primaris marines, but just because I wanted to tell a story from before them’ I did not understand why, back then.
