One word of advice if you do go Admech: You are going to want a pair of fine reverse tweezers. Not to build your model, but to re-attach the fragile bits that break off. Necrons are their Xenos counterpart; Fragile as hell and more glue than plastic after a certain point.

You can go iron hands. They are a space marine faction with similiar beliefs to the mechanicus but have more of a cyberpunk warrior vibe than steampunk. Other factions with similiar vibes would be the votann who worship technology but have a much higher tech vibe to them. They are humans who never joined the imperium and instead embraced genetic engineering and AI making them one of the more high tech factions in 40k with lasers and robots.

I can feel the monkey's paw curling when I think about a Dark Eldar refresh. They're already one of the most expensive armies to collect - they're basically saved by their combat patrol and the fact that some of their (still available) kits are at or around the $50 mark -, so I shudder to think how bad they'll be if they get an update with modern GW prices to match. $60+ for a single new grotesque? $70+ for five new hellions? $150+ for new Vect - with no slave girls, I might add?

If you wanna start a Death Guard army don't buy the combat patrol, buy the BOARDING patrol. You get death shroud terminators, a full unit of plague marines, and a supporting character. Shame GW doesn't seem to admit they exist anymore, but they are a massive value in one box.

Newcomers in the US, let’s make it easy: 1. Skip chaos knights - you will never ever see a war dog mini and you need like 6 of them (3 kits) minimum for a 2k army. This is where my army is stuck missing out on them when they come in once a year and sell out in seconds. This isn’t “can’t build optimally” this is “good luck having 2k”. My 6 war dog build includes two big knights 2. Skip GSC - extremely expensive army and very hard to play well. This could be a cool second army, or maybe if you’re super patient and committed to the idea of the common man/alien rising up. 3. Pick what excites you most that remains available.

@@rellikskuppin7417 after painting my 10 knights (2 questoris, a lancer, a dominus and 6 armigers) I can confirm twas all true. I'm now building custodes, and I got the part I hate out of the way (glueing) I've just painted 5 wardens and a single sword and board guard and I'm like fuck sake..I got 37 more models to paint...and whilst I love the painting, I know it's going to be a long time before I actually get to use my custodes. They just got a lovely buff in the dataslate, but by the time I've finished painting them they will probably be nerfed again 🤣. Knights are still abit of a meh army ATM I think. They will be better if they got their bondsman abilities. I'll post a video at some point of my knight collection because I reckon it's a pretty impressive attempt at a first army. House taranis colours with all the transfers.. took me the 2 months it's been since this comment to paint them all but it was so worth it. I fucking love this hobby.

The main problem with Drukhari at the moment seems to be what people’s collections look like rather than if Drukhari can win games. If your cupboard has a lot of Incubi and Wyches, but you’re short on Talos and Mandrakes, you’re probably having a hard time of it with them. But, we’ve seen a few lists evolve that are competitive - they just depend on limited availability models (or just plain unavailable models for new players or people needing to expand).

necrons and tyranids are rewarding to play and only require a small range of standard core units. afterwards you can choose what you like while enjoying pretty newly updated plastic kits of melee/range/horde/elite/vehicle/monster based armies. theyre easier to paint too. or just take any type of knights. uncomplicated as it gets.

Great Knights are probably the most convenient to build full army for as low amount of money as possible, but being one of the trickiest armies to pilot or in some cases an army that just doesn't have answers. 3x Combat Patrol + 1x Boarding Patrol + Bits in scope of Psycannons for Paladins and Strike Team. 3x Nemesis Dreadknights is the max you ever board. - 1x10 Purifiers and 3x5 Purgators or 2x10 and 1x5 other Strike Team combinations is what you max deploy, so 25xStrike Team models. - 3x Librarians - 3x5 Terminators or 10x Paladins + 10x Terminators, so 20x Terminator models max. - 1x Crowe All you probably want after that is Voldus and Stern, then you have a full diversity of lists to build.

I just want a slow moving, tanky, elite infantry army that's good at shooting. The aesthetic of powerful battle lines moving across the field is just right up my alley. But what to choose? Dark Angels? Votann? Death Guard? Iron Warriors/ Iron Hands? ( I don't like fielding vehicles though) I started collecting Sisters of Battle right at the end of 9th, and then they kind of changed flavor in 10th, so idk if that's what I want to play now. There are simply too many cool factions in 40k for me... Wolves, Dark Angels, Salamanders, Imperial Guard (mostly Krieg), Sororitas, World Eaters, Papi Nurgle, Necrons, Orks and Nids... It would require from me to preform a ritual to summon Cthulhu, and ask him to make me immortal, because life is too short (plus I aint got no space) to collect all that.. Though I intend to collect all that or die trying.

Since the Votann come from Terra, they are by definition abhumans. However, they left Terra long before the coming of the Emperor (at least the DAoT if not before), and have no connection to Imperial culture. Current Imperial records can't quite if they are xenos or abhuman squats, but the Votann have no interest in being seen as abhuman since that would give the Imperium a claim to subjugate them (or more realistically, once the Imperials hear about all the xenos trading and AI cores, exterminate them).

Don’t panic! If they are cool and interesting models, you have won. I lived through the meta only a few short years ago where every other player was AdMech or Drukari because they were kings of the world. If you love the models, and enjoy the playstyle, you’ll be happy playing casual games and enjoy the power boosts when they come.

I love everything about thousand suns and harlequins but I'm new to the game and am intimidated by both their painting and gameplay complexity.

Hello, thousand sons player here. Don’t panic too hard about the painting complexity. I got a super slick technique that while it does take some time is far faster and less frustrating than a traditional method. Prime the power armor (rubric, scarab, characters) in the metal trim color you want, something like citadel runelord brass or retributor armor. Then “fill in” the armor using contrast paints. It comes off as a cool colored metal. My recipe is runelord brass spray, Kroxigar scales contrast for the blue armor, and blood angels red for the helmet and Bolters (sometimes I mix it up and do volpous pink on warpflamer). The principle holds up with small details like contrast on a part of the staff you want colored. Just remember to buy a pot of a plain grey or white for covering up the tabard before applying the contrast because you don’t want the cloth to look metallic.

As for Thousand Sons playstyle, it’s worth pointing out we can technically take forgefiend, helbrute, and the usual suspects (rhino/land raider/predator/vindicator). If you are playing casually with friends it’s not the worst thing in the world to take one or two of these vehicles to help you with punching up at tougher targets. So don’t feel like you have to be all infantry with tricks just because the high level players do it.

I play Thousand Sons. Their paint scheme is definitely challenging. There's no ignoring that. But man, is it satisfying to have them fully painted. Their rules in 10th have also been significantly streamlined, so playing them shouldn't require you to figure out 45-minute psychic phases anymore. I'd say this is probably the best time to start playing them because their rules are the simplest they've been while maintaining a lot of fun flavor.

more elite grey knights are not handicapped yes , fast yes. but they lost most of thier rules, for combat, so are generally a profound OK C tier at best still .

Play Custodes or Grey Knights. Custodes are hyper elite, cheap to buy, and easy to paint. You can easily secure a 500 dollar 2k+ point army at Games Workshop MSRP and still have enough money left over for a Rhino. Do not pay MSRP for a Rhino, Rhinos are free, it's just Games Workshop doesn't want you to know this. Ask any player at your LGS if they have a spare Rhino and you will probably have them throwing them at you because you need one Rhino and after that, the Rhino stops being useful unless you wanna paint ten of them for each faction you own that can use them. Custodes are rather new kits, the Rhino is not. Grey Knights you can literally just buy the Combat Patrol three times over and with very little redundancy, you have your army. Very easy 2k points, they just kinda suck to paint. Other options include: Space Marines (You get tons of value boxes and options), Knights (You play a vastly different game than everyone else, even in a 1k point list, very Timmy), or the God-Aligned Legions (You have a rather limited model range, but who cares when you have a Daemon Primarch?)

The answer is whichever one you find cool. Try hards will always look to abuse rules and gw will always nerf and buff based on what they want to sell. If you chase this you will never have fun and will sink a ton of money into a "pile of shame". We have all been there lol. Pick the army that speaks to you the most and have fun.
