We have metal doors and these on on them as well. Also the hinges have these little lips that stick out to keep the door from being kicked off the hinges as well. Upgraded all the screws to 4 inch screws as well. The front door I installed 2 of these things on the top that you can flip down when you are home to also help with kicking in. I've not put it to the test but I am certain nobody could kick in my doors and would need a battering ram or smash into it with a vehicle. That along with security film on all my windows and cameras and motion sensors and door and window sensors my place is locked down like fort Knox. Last line of defense if someone did make it in successful they would not be walking out alive.

It never hurts to reinforce the doorframe, I made one of these out of some angle iron but it doesn't look as nice as yours..lol. I also spent a few dollars on a video security system, they're not that expensive anymore and it allows you to check on your place when your not home or get a warning to your smartphone if the system detects any problems. Thanks for your efforts making videos to help people do things themselves, and ignore the buttholes that have nothing better to do than spread their negativity around. I've noticed that just about every video has the haters commenting. Thanks again and have an awesome day.

I would highly recommend using those door reinforcement plates on the bolts. Just as a visible deterrent it will save you a lot of grief. Thieves would try kicking the door leaving dents and shoe prints if they think there are no backing plates. I have a door with glass windows, so the first thing thieves see is a glass break alarm next to the bolt, the next thing they see is the metal plate screw mounted over the deadbolts, the third thing they see is the tint on the window so they can't see into the house. The more layers they see, the more hurdles they have to get around.

Europe is ages ahead U.S.A. in this kind of things, maybe because we can't rely on firearms to protect ourselves inside our homes, take a look at the kind of front doors we use to have in our common houses, I mean, not in jewelries, banks and so on. Nobody wants a wood frame and wood door over here and locks are also very advanced too. Greetings from Spain. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqO6h2yan6-dhMk and kzbin.info/www/bejne/goGXmn2PetKkq6c

25 cent steel? That would be an option, but the kit he used has 3 sections designed to overlap and with cut-outs for the dead bolt and latch, and it comes with the required screws--no looking for them. I dunno what the kit costs, but there's some value to having what you need all together.

One thing you can do instead of installing the plate ( and do it differently, mind you ) is back out the small 1" screws and replace ALL of them with 4" screws, on the latch side as well as the hinge side. If you have a solid door and frame it's gonna be VERY HARD for anyone to kick in your door, with those 4" screws, makes all the difference !

I would remove the one piece of casing and install shims between the stud and jam at each new screw location so when you tighten the screws it doesn't open door jam reval and have a big gap. just my opinion
@roningram58776 жыл бұрын
didn't hand tightening the screws (after drilling proper pilot holes) keep that from happening?
@RJ-kg5jh5 жыл бұрын
As long as he doesnt throttle the screws in with a heavy duty impact there is no risk of deforming the door opening. The foam that is in between the door jamb and stud is high density and heavy enough to prevent even moderate deformation of the door jamb. The biggest mistake he made was in thinking that the drill bit length makes any difference whatsoever. Even the best custom build door jambs are only 3/4" thick wood and piloting the length of the screw even if we assume he is trying to reach well beyond the stud is not necessary. He could save time by just using one bit. Lol at people complaining about using ceramic tile as a backing during the drilling process - even a cobalt bit isnt putting a hole in tile without serious intent.
@bonchidude3 жыл бұрын
Three locks works well and as well as two locks with the lock strike plate. But to be honest this option of 3 locks cost more. 2 deadbolt and one of the is a medeco deadbolt. That should do it too. I got deeper screws with the medeco deadbolt.

To all viewers out there...my door got kicked in by a burglar or something who was just angry at me for not being home. I just went the store in the evening when I got home my door was ajar. So I tried to look around at ACE hardware store for something like this. My door jamb was damaged. So what i did was use a metal-stud strap plate I installed it and made a 3/4 inch hole and put it on the backside of the door jamb. I'm confident the next time the perpetrator won't be able to kick in my door. But I like to purchase this plate in this video. 👍 But like I said folks I used a 6 inch wide flatstrap the metal-stud framers use and I used some self tapping screws metal-stud screws which have a lot of holding strength. I'm a metal-stud framer.

Let’s be honest; any modifications that require deeper and/or additional holes for screws into the wood on your door and/or door frame only weakens the wood. For such a small amount of wood on your door and door frame, less mass equals much less strength. Instead of drilling away the wood on your door frame, get a Nightlock door barricade, which is mounted into the solid concrete floor, or get something similar to the Security Door Bar (by Securadoor). You should also have a good outside motion detection system to alert you of intruders around the perimeter of your home. I found Guardline to be the best. You can easily add relays to the system, such as an alarm and strobe light. Lastly and personally, I also keep a cellphone and handgun on me at all times while at home.

The second door plate that wraps is at least as important as the frame plate, if your door is wood. Many tactics will still override these reinforcements, as the frame can be pryed open unless it has been beefed up between the frame and nearest studs.

Why not use 3 inch screws for every hole on the strike Plate?
@S.E.Locksmith6 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question! Because not all the holes are closed to the inside door stud location. the inside stud is usually located close to the line of the door weather stripping and goes farther in - about 2 inch. that’s way other holes will not hit the stud. Check out my video on the 11 inch security door Strike Plate - it’s much easier to install, cheaper to buy and give you a great security as well if not the same as the Ultimate Door Strike Plate (this Video): kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaq8k42wqq2habM

I think the longer screws that go through the first piece of wood and into the actual door frame is really all the security you need in the strike plate area and replacing two screws in each hinge. The fire department would have to come through the door itself than the frame around it. No foot or shoulder is gonna break it down.
@jimk53076 жыл бұрын
mama2one1 that’s better than most default installs but not enough to resist like you suggest. This solution distributes the force across more area. There are stronger options but they require more effort and trim repair.

I would only recommend one change from what you said in the video. If your house is newer your front and other exterior doors all have double studs ( two 2x4's) which equals 4" of stud depth. Your door frame has 1" depth. So in total there is 5" of depth that you can screw into at the hinges. Use 4" deck screws instead of 3". With 4" deck screws they will go completely through the door frame, thru the first stud, and halfway into the second stud! 3" screws won't reach into the second stud at all. Those could be used on the hinge that connects to the door, but use 4" for the hinge that attaches to the door frame. Nice video otherwise.
@russellhobbs12607 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip.
@apex0077 жыл бұрын
2x4 does not mean 2 inches.. 1.5 at best.. thats why you get 3 inch screws
@stipcrane7 жыл бұрын
In what country is a 2x4 two inches thick?! Even if they were three inches thick, who says you need to go though two studs? Biting into 2" of studs is plenty, because the shaft of the screw will certainly snap before the thread will withdraw from 2" of wood. Try it with a crowbar sometime. Also I have doubts that a 4" screw will have a head small enough to fit the countersink of the hinge.
@jeffm.21196 жыл бұрын
2x4s are actually 1 1/2” x 3 1/2”. So (2) 2x4s and a 1” framing piece (actually 3/4”) would only be about 3 3/4” total.
@jimk53076 жыл бұрын

Maybe it makes sense if the door opens by swinging out, but if the opens swing in, then it makes zero sense to install this product unless you have lots of chump change to spare. The whole idea is to prevent break-ins and won't stop you from going out of your home.

It makes sense to install it in both scenarios. You see what holding the door is really the frame and it doesn’t really matter if it’s a swinging in or out type of door, good reinforcement is highly recommended for any door

@@S.E.Locksmith Does this type of reinforcement work for double door or you have to use a different type of strike plates?
@S.E.Locksmith5 жыл бұрын
HonYin Kok No This Strike Plate it’s not for a double door. For a double door I would recommend you to check my other video: Nightlock Door Barricade - Double Door Reinforcement Tip kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4DbaWiuarqLkKM

I like the idea but I find the description hilarious. "Burglars in recent years have become more sophisticated... They can gain access to your house simply by forcefully kicking your door!"

What if I have a wood door?

Guaranteed if someone tried to kick in the door, it will give at the weakest point which is the locks. The door will split so all the strength of the frame is useless unless you strengthen the door and locks.

Thanks for this vid. Just recently someone has (tried) to kick my door in, and this looks fairly easy to do, so I'm definitely putting this new plate in. The only thing is, around the door knob bolt on the door is badly cracked, and I really would like to know how to reinforce it.
@S.E.Locksmith8 жыл бұрын
hi etm, thank you for the nice comment. for the cracked around the doorknob I would help you but I need to see a pic of the door and the lock to determine what will work best. Please send me a private massage here on KZbin with your email and I'll replay to you.

If the crack is on the door, use a round plate of steel where the knob is mounted. If it's on the frame, the door frame armor should help that. But I would look for an armor kit that uses one solid strip of steel
