I actually have one of those old school 1st-gen Vics, though it's the facelift '89 LX. That one ex-cop (or perhaps regular with cop speedo swapped, since there's no spotlight) Crown Victoria single handedly whopped those '80s Caprices down like the Bluesmoble, though it too unfortunately went down eventually. Ford Tough. I miss when police cars were police cars, and being body on frame with big V8s.

I was a deputy sheriff in the late 80's to mid 90's. The Caprice unmarked we had and the Caprices of the NCSHP would out run a Crown Vic in a heartbeat. (No pun intended.) My original patrol vehicle was an 87' Crown Vic. It was governed to 105mph. The same year Caprices were governed to 120mph. My next Crown Vic was a brand new 93' model. I can attest and would do so under oath, those Crown Vics we had in the sheriff department, to include mine, were governed to 147mph from the factory. I personally know this for a fact. I also know that the 5.0 LX Pursuit Mustangs with the 302 and the Caprices with the LT1 engines were governed to 154mph. This was in NC. Your mileage may vary. I don't recommend running at those speeds without a rollcage and the proper onboard safety equipment, but it came with the job sometimes. I grew up in a law enforcement family with the 440/375hp Mopars, the cough, cough, 396/350hp Chevys, the 427/425hp Chevys and the 390/325hp Ford Interceptors along with a few odd 428 powered Fords. I still wish I owned my 70' ex-NJSP Fury III. I loved that car, but life moves on. I almost cried watching the amount of Mopars wrecked in the Blues Brothers movie. Same with that stupid TV show Dukes of Hazard.

You realize they would go through multiple cars filming this stuff, right? IDK about this movie (some of those jumps didn't look too good for the suspension/frame) but Bullitt took 2 Chargers and 3 Mustangs. Things like roof strength and side impact bars are way better than the cars of old. I do kinda agree with you on the bumpers though, technically modern cars still have metal bumpers, but they are hidden behind those awful plastic bits that break super easily. They need to bring back bumper standards, crumple zones are important at higher speeds, but at like 5-10 MPH, the goal should be minimal damage to the car.

I will be the guy to comment this so don't be like it's just a movie. I know it is. I'm just throwing in my 2 cents. The one thing that bothers me about Hollywood and police chase movie scenes is even in the 80s the Police had standard procedures. One thing is that Adam 12, CHIPS got right on those procedures and they're 70s police tv shows. Cops just don't ram into the sides of the suspect's car, all your doing is hurting your car in the process and I'm sure taxpayers alone wouldn't be happy to see that. Let alone a police chief or commissioner. Cops even back then used the pit maneuver. Things that are still to date today. I know a true story, My Dad was a cop in York County, Pennsylvania, though in this pursuit he never made contact with the suspects using his vehicle, it still highlights procedures. He was in York Township Police Department. This one story, He was in pursuit of a robbery suspect who he chased out of his jurisdiction all the way on to I-83 southbound to the Maryland Line. He was told to stick with them. His patrol car was an 81 Chevy Caprice. He had that pedal to the floor (literally). The suspects (I think) had some jeep or whatever. I swear, he was still slightly being outrun by them. Whilst he chased the suspects down I-83 he was notified that York was notifying Maryland State Police of a pursuit and that they would set up a roadblock on the Maryland line. Once Maryland State Police were set up, he was told to break off pursuit. The suspects met Maryland State troopers with a wall of lead if they didn't stop. I don't know what happened but, common sense tells me that they did stop and give up. He never had to be aggressive as far as ramming his patrol car into the suspect's car. Oh and as far as flipping an 80s Police vehicle only for a crash and michael bay effects. Wouldn't of happened. Actually, it would just be more damage done. Most cops of the 80s would just wait till the suspect crashed into something. Which was always bound to happen. Even in a time when cars were easy to repair. Cops of that time always avoided collisions. It was seen as undesirable. It wasn't repair costs but rather paperwork. Something that haunts cops to this day.

The stunt in 1.40 was filmed Twice - once with the pickup truck and another time - according to B roll footage - with an estate car. I'm assuming the right side of the pickup truck hit the car and turned it and therefore the car couldn't carry on in a straight line. When we see the car from the front view that is when it hit the estate car which being lighter than a truck - did not turn the car as much. One of the Best car chases of the 1990s!
@joshuaecht3 жыл бұрын
Estate car? (Or are you referring to a station wagon)? We had an '82 LTD Country Squire wagon; those were awesome!
@budekins542 Жыл бұрын
@@joshuaecht Yes it was a station wagon with a kind of curved back end. Not like the straight edged station wagon in 'Vacation'.

A few criticisms here about the film. 1 Sarah Jessica Parker is way too pretty to pass as a state trooper. 2 they jumped all over the damn city. From mount Washington to the Liberty tubes, to the 10th street and 16th street bridges, to downtown, to Carson street . And none of those locations are remotely close to one another. Next what kind of idiot tries to shoot a front tire of a car out on the side facing him? It’s obvious the car will go spearing off into you, you shoot the rear tire out so it spears away from you. Then there’s hitting it at speed with a gutter sight .38 snub revolver while not aiming. He’s never shown reloading it after the attempted roadblock. Final flaw was at that time the Pittsburgh police had one of the most eclectic police fleets in history. Up until the front wheel drive 02/03 impala the cops here could never settle on one particular car. They had Ramcharger SUVs mixed with Oldsmobile delta 88s mixed with Buicks and Chevy luminas and Pontiac Bonnevilles thrown in even some full sized vans for good measure. And that’s only the marked police units. State police at that time operated 9C1 caprices ( bubble body cars) almost exclusively but they were beginning to phase in crown Victorias as the 9C1 was nearing the end of production. In many cases PSP units did have a few marked Jeep Cherokees on hand for bad weather days

You should check out 1994's SPEED and watch as Sandra Bullock's character puts that GM bus to its paces in order not to go below 50mph because there's a bomb on board and if she does then it'll explode plus that epic jump scene is amazingly done and i did saw the behind the scenes of and how they did it.

None of these cars look old to me. They look like normal cars. This movie is from 30 years ago. I guess that means I must be old now. Notice - almost all American cars. Hardly any foreign cars at all in this clip.

3:31 Escort probably an 85- 90 if I recall right In 85 didnt they make both (sealed beam early in the year and the composite headlamp shown here mid to late year)
How many Crown Vic P72s did they use? That bad boy auto healed it's self like 4-5 times. Kind of a shame, 351w Police Package detective trim Crown Vics like that are unobtanium now. So are the 9C1 Caprice detective packages like the silver one they are driving with an L05 or LM1 350. I'd take one of each and mod them up to around 400-500hp with a stroker kit, aluminum heads, big roller cam, high rise single plane, 4bbl or sniper EFI, headers, still with a quiet enough exhaust that classic induction moan rules the day.

This stunt answers the age old question, which is better, Chevy or Ford. And we got the answer. The Ford took out an entire fleet of chevys. Even before rolling over to die, it took along with it, the head honchos aka bruce Willis's Chevy
@BilllieverMinistryАй бұрын
Let's give some major respect to the LTD Crown Victoria in this chase. Not only did it wipe out an entire fleet of Chevy police cars on its own, it took out a full-size pickup and kept going. Then, at the end, even in it's death, it managed to take out one more Chevy police car. All of this while stylishly losing hubcaps, regaining them, and regenerating itself. That's one tough Ford.
