We have these engines here as the TU26. Had one to repair yesterday. Symptoms could be misleading. Fairly new but stalling as if the ignition was cutting off. Replacec the original Torch plug with cc a NGK BPMR 7A. No stalling like before but prolonged idle it stalled. Cured that with the high speed adjustment screw . But it was not smooth, and needed a high idle. I then did what i should have done first, adjust the low speed, which on these carbs needs the needle to be turned out. But there was no slot for a screw driver on the top of the needle. So i had to lift the top off and use a nose pliers to turn the needle out . Started up at 2nd pull and ran like a champ. So i tried the Torch plug and it worked fine. This carb needle being too lean has been an issue on several of these TU 26 engines that i had repaired. If the needle is also adjusted in relation to the h screw the engine gives a far smoother idle and minimum four stroking in low to medium but the bare presence in full throttle, and minimum exhaust smoke

It would help if symptoms were shown before tear down. I have an Echo SRM 225 sometimes it will try to start but will not run. I replaced the carb fuel lines and Spark plug same results. Checked cylinder presurre and it was 90 psi. Seemed tolow but I can't find specs.
@VintageEngineRepairs
@VintageEngineRepairs 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback :) Is the srm225 a 2 stroke? If so, you’ll ideally aiming for 150 psi. There is an issue somewhere it seems - quite possibly your compression tester not being suitable for small engines - here you go :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2fIiYJso52bnsksi=F2E4H3z2R__psEUf

Thanks John! They call it an EasyLoad. First time I have ever seen it. I will do some more cutting today and change the lines a few times before I make up my mind if I like it or not! Nice having such little mass at the end though, the engine spools up very fast because of it! Very zippy setup!
@Big_Johns
@Big_Johns 2 жыл бұрын
I bet it is very light weight, I’m curious to see how much line it can hold. 👍🏼
@VintageEngineRepairs
@VintageEngineRepairs 2 жыл бұрын
It holds a total of one length of cutting line LOL. You literally unscrew it slightly, slip in the line, tighten the screw and cut it to length. It’s not a good design in that respect
@Big_Johns
@Big_Johns 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm, lots of reloading then.
@VintageEngineRepairs
@VintageEngineRepairs 2 жыл бұрын
@@Big_Johns yes, it’s certainly not my first choice in design mate. If you have lengths already cut up, it’s pretty simple and quick - unscrew the head 1/4 of a turn, slip new line in, tighten up 1/4 of a turn. However abump line is quicker haha.

I have done small engine repair for over 41 years now.....Having said that, I must say that I've learned a lot from you and your excellent videos. Tell me what your method is for cleaning a very nasty fuel tank. I mean it is covered with a thick glue-like substance from fuel mix sitting in it for approximately 25 years or longer. I have cleaned my share of messy tanks....but, this is the worst. Please tell me your thoughts on this.
@VintageEngineRepairs
@VintageEngineRepairs 4 ай бұрын
Hey, there is only one product I ever use for tank cleaning - methylated spirits. It’s the only thing I have found that actually does a fantastic job. It will need some time to soak and occasional agitation. Nuts and bolts shaken around speeds up the process a lot, but may damage tanks with a liner. Let me know how you go :)

Again, I love your videos by far. You are the best at what you do I do have 1 questions you used some sort of punch set to make holes in the gasket material. Could you please tell me what they are called and where I could pick up a set I appreciate any advice thank you.
@VintageEngineRepairs
@VintageEngineRepairs Жыл бұрын
This punch set was from my local hardware store, but there is nothing special about it :) it’s overpriced if i’m honest. I’d suggest going onto Amazon and search for “0.5-10cm hole punch set” hope it helps!
@chrisrageNJ
@chrisrageNJ Жыл бұрын
If you're in America, Harbor Freight sells punch sets. Quite often I don't find the size I need so I grind my own out of a piece of pipe or tubing. Sand the end of the tube flat and chase the center with a burr or a drill bit if there's any sort of seam, then grind a cutting edge on the tube on a bench grinder. The striations should go from the cutting edge down, parallel to the tube. If you twist it sideways on the grinder you can see it easier but it'll cut like shit. If you don't find the exact size you need I've had luck with a flaring tool for brake lines to make the proper diameter, then sharpen the cutting edge. It can be soft metal, too- I've used aluminum and copper in a pinch, they'll dull out quicker but they'll do the job. You can also sharpen steel banding strap and cut it with aviation snips/ bend and form it to cut odd shapes. An exacto using a piece of Masonite or hard rubber works well too, just avoid plain wood bc the grain can lead the exacto to spots you don't want to cut

Is there a recommended figure when doing the pressure and vacuum tests? I did hear you mention 15 at one point but was that for both?
@VintageEngineRepairs
@VintageEngineRepairs Жыл бұрын
Yes :) I go to 7 psi. The reason you saw 15 was because the mityvac reads in inches of mercury on vacuum and there are roughly 2 inches of mercury per 1 PSI. :) hope this helps!

I'm not a mechanic, but why didn't you use a tachometer to adjust the engine ? And how accurate this compression readings are ? Is there any specific compression tester for small engines ? Another test is to check if there is a spark under pressure, why didn't you do this, just asking, I'm learning. )) Thank you. Great content.
@VintageEngineRepairs
@VintageEngineRepairs Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the kind words, lots of great questions! A tachometer is an essential tool to ensure you don’t over speed the engine. You can get very close without, just by ear, but I do both, by ear and a tach. The compression tester accuracy is dependant on the quality. Yes they make specific small engine testers :) I often test spark under compression too. Thanks for watching!

Nice ! Just one thing was useless in your procedures. You looked for a carb gasket to make a new one. You don't need old gasket to make a new one. Just put a little oil on the flange and stamp it on gasket paper. Thus you make a precise copy of your flange.
