Many years ago my buddy's air cooled YZ125 blew the head gasket when we were camped way out in the SoCal desert. Made a gasket from a beer can. Worked great for about an hour. We made several more and took off for a long ride. When one would blow, we'd toss it and put on another. Beats having to waist our day to go all the way back to town to find a new gasket.

I just use a straight edge or metal ruler to set the height of the needle rocker arm assembly &:I set it until it's just touching the metal ruler. Aldo be careful which diaphragm you use because some of the pins on the middle of the diaphragm are longer or shorter than what came out of the carburettor !
@VintageEngineRepairs
@VintageEngineRepairs Сағат бұрын
That works, but only for specific carburetors :) yes the diaphragms have different length nipples!

Carburetor? Internal combustion engines are history. We are changing to electric motors, much simpler and cheaper device. Lithium titanate batteries now can be recharged 30,000 times, this is the death sentence to combustion engines. Correct channel name, combustion engines are vintage , if not now, soon.

Electric cars are great - you have an oversized BBQ at any minute :) Not to mention they give you lots of time to write comments like yours while sitting in line at a charging station :)

@@VintageEngineRepairs this is history now, lithium titanate is like supercapacitor, it can charge and discharge fully in 6 minutes. Don't underestimate the progress of nanotechnology.
@VintageEngineRepairs

@absolute___zero Lithum titanate has very poor energy density (1/3 that of li-ion), is very expensive and is the reason they’re not used in vehicles. You’d add 3x the mass for the same energy storage. Electric vehicles are already heavy and get poor mileage as it is. But anyway, you’ve come to the wrong channel if your are passionate about electric cars and machines.

@@VintageEngineRepairs I know I am on a wrong channel, but I came to see a video on how to sharpen drill bits, not interested in investing my time in an old technology like internal combustion engines. You will understand this in about 20 years when you won't be able to buy a car with internal combustion engine anymore

Lot of knowledge,, I'm probably going to be a parts replacer,, and replace the whole carb,, course i bought a new one that is not working,, which is problem with being a parts replacer,, instead of a trouble shooter,, you buy a new set of problems,,, !?
@VintageEngineRepairs
@VintageEngineRepairs 14 сағат бұрын
There is a time and place for both :) I must admit, the last 2 after market carburetors I used, one was flawless the other idles poorly, but actually runs well at full throttle! They’re improving :)

Yes i ordered a brand new carb with a short block,, for weed trimmer,, does not run right,, I'm going to try carn on original engine,, I can't remember the name of the weed eater, when i went to trade school, the teacher taught us the circuits of the carb,, i think 7 circuits,, idle, off idle, cruise, full throttle,, accelerator curcuit , float bowl,, choke circuit, i could fix any carb after that,, i did jot get to set in on his automatic transmission class,, so i just started tearing transmissions down snd putting them back togather with new clutches snd seals,, cleaned up, best i could, they worked,, i did not really know how they work,, they did,, !!? I remember the older guys in one shop,, i heard them saying, "they gotta be clean" that's the most important thing,,! So when i worked on forklifts, i did the automatic transmissions,, they had reverse and forward,, were super strong,, the dealer i worked at had book showed trans fluid circuitry,, bosses bought a big flat bed truck, so i drove to other side of town brought a large 6cylinder forklift back to shop,, rebuilt trans, put it back on flat bed truck, drove it back across town,, everyone was happy,, no one asked me if i had a license to drive truck,, was easy to drive,, cab tilt back could see engine v-8 ford,, was fun to drive,, i was getting goid at rebuilding forklift transmissions,,!!? Oh well, we're talking about weed trimmers,, these little carbs,, i have not broken the code on these things yet,, ??!!

Back in the 1970s we used to use Tide laundry powder boxes to make nice heavy duty gaskets, there are a lot of other heavy duty boxes like it still around like Rid-X 5 dose treatment one, you can also get Fel-Pro or other sheet gasket material at Advance auto and other auto parts outlets too I used that a couple years ago after the gaskets on my Harbor Freight Central Pneumatic 21 gallon air compressor failed and they were not available.

You don't need to have the throttle wide open. You want to disable fuel when doing a compression test. Throttle plate restriction won't affect your readings.

This WON'T HARDEN steel unless it is immediately QUENCHED after the heating. I've go one of these, and it'll make the bolt SOFTER so that the bolt HEAD more likely snaps OFF.

Used to be fun in the 1960s to turn the starting pawl around in Lister powered Dumper, operator would try to turn engine in correct direction, pawl would not engage but would in reverse and start backwards, this confused operator as dumper would move forwards in reverse gear only and blew black smoke out of air cleaner, Evil sods us motor mechanics

I’ve been doing this for a long time now. I started refilling them in my workshop when I ran out and the nearest shop that sells them is half an hour drive away and would have been shut that time of night, then I started using them to light my workshop wood fireplace which ended with me getting another torch and bottle with the workshop torch and bottle ending up inside my house to light the inside fireplace. I have never bothered with venting any unused gas before I refill the bottle, what the logic behind this? Also what is the little valve off to the side used for? I always thought it was for bleeding the tank while filling it but it doesn’t move
@VintageEngineRepairs

Glad it works for you too :) just refilled mine yesterday. I’ll refill a few times before disposing and getting a new can just in case! That is an over pressure valve. A safety feature that is designed to release if too much internal pressure occurs to stop the can failing.

So do you actually burn of the plastic coating or just discolouration it and leave it on when assembling.. I've used beer cans in the past although not for gaskets ,only spacers .. I burned the plastic completely off and then polished it up with fine wet and dry .
@VintageEngineRepairs
@VintageEngineRepairs 2 күн бұрын
Na don’t get it so hot it burns away completely, you’ll likely destroy the gasket in the process.

Brake cleaner aerosol is the best thing for cleaning out ports and tiny feed holes. Watch out for internal particle sieves which often get gunged up with a waxy deposit from the petrol. A good clean often sorts things out.

I don’t know anything about that craftsman lathe, ht I have used and made incredibly accurate parts to the micron with this Vevor mini lathe. It takes a few mods as shown in this video and you can create precision parts. It’s quiet, consistent and a great little machine for the price.
