String alignment is extremely important to both recurve and barebow archery. I give my thoughts on the best place to put your string blur for both recurve archers and barebow archers.

Thanks so much for this video. I was shooting with the string too far to the left. I’m a lefty, and the arrows were landing far right. Now, instead of holding at the left edge of the 40 cm target to hit center, I can hold at target center. :)

One thing with barebow, I use the light curvature of the string to verify the exact center of the string when setting up my string alignment. If you stare at the target and slowly move the string to the center of your eye, you will see the target jump from the left side of the string to the right side of the string (for right handed shooter) as the light warps around the string. This takes out the string blur part of the shot which can change based on lighting conditions.

In barebow, as you crawl the string, your aperture will vary. So will the arrow stiffness, which means impacts left and right for distances other than the one your bow was tunned. From what I understand, bb shooters will have different stringblur pictures for different distances. Either that or adjust the plunger

My string is so far on the left of the pin as a RH shooter I feel bad. Right eye dominant. But it sure explain why my horizontal grouping still lack consistency. Will try in my next session to move it towards the riser. I think it comes down to not have a solid consistent anchor which gives with “tension & direction” the wrong direction.

Hi, I am recurve-shooter, right handed🤚 shooting now for 9 years. P-Record 563/600 indoor. I figured out, after 2 years at beginning, that for me specific, I am more precise when the string is on the left side of the pin📍between the pin and the inner circle after sight. String on nose tip 👃 and chin slightly right. Explanation: My Focus is confused when the string is on the right side, because I don’t recognise the string when it’s closer to the riser.😅 …it disappears. I figured out that this depends on the turn of head position. When the nose blocks the right dominant eye 👁️ by focusing target (wrong head turn), the left eye becomes dominant on target while right still focus string. So it helps me controlling head position turn, when I set string slightly on left side of pin 📍 , focus with both eye 👁️ but to keep right eye dominant. Kind of closed “view system” feeling. I right all sight settings depends on sun in my app 📃 ☀️⛅️☁️➡️⬅️⬆️⬇️

Hi Jake, if you line the string up with the centre of the bow when setting it up, but then you line up the string with the riser when aiming does that not then make the bow throw the arrows to the left? My partner's arrows are now landing more and more left the further back she goes. Does she have to move her centre shot or button tension to straighten them up again?

Hi Jake, Thank you for all the information you share. I bought a second-hand recurve bow mid-October, and now I have a group following your videos. However, I like to tilt the biw so I be able to shoot from a horse or while I am behind the ground behind seated or kneeling. It is bare bow shooting of shelves, nothings on it. OLD Hoyt Game Master 2. I am lefty. Tilting to leave my group moves to left. Do I need new anchor point, or I tried different alignments on the bow and weekend the arrow spine by adding heavier pointers? Any advice? If I hold bow straight everything works. Thanks again.

Hi there. I shoot right handed and I noticed it when I tried to line the string up to the left side of the riser my arrows tended to land left. I wound up with a site picture in which I had to look at the arrow tip through the blur of the string. In other words the string blur directly overlapped the arrow shaft and tip. At this point I was able to get the arrow to land where desired. Does this suggest a setup problem? My bow is a Samick Sage take down 35# without sights.

Thanks for this. I find that I am looking through my bow, which always made sense to me as a right-eye dominant shooter putting the string down the middle of my face (nose, lips, chin). What is the proper movement to change my string alignment? Does this mean I am turning my head too far towards the target?
@WestCoastChainmail

I can change my anchor, but...even so, it would seem that this points to some larger problem with my form, either my bow hand/arm are not swung out wide enough or my head angle needs to change to get my eye outside the string. In any case, a lot to think about...

thanks for the video, a lot of good tips. i'm shooting barebow after a couple of years of recurve, and i still don't understand how can you align the string with the arrow while anchoring in the side of your face, and not under the jaw. i've seen some barebow shooters tilting their faces over their knuckles, but also a lot that don't, and my instructor and every instructor in the web say that you shouldn't do it. any tip?

@@CristiNeagu thanks for the tip, but actually i am string walking, and the anchoring to the side of my face is always fixed in the same position, as i've seen all barebow shooters do. obviously i'm doing something wrong but i can't find what. i'm getting some good shots (for my level), but by the string position i have to aim completely out of the yellow circle, far to the left. feels weird.

When I'm at anchor, the string is so far to the right, it's almost completely out of my sight picture. I don't understand having the string in line with the riser and my right eye. Similar issue here - I shoot trad field archery (UK NFAS Trad BowHunter class, gap-shooting, stringwalking not allowed), and anchor middle finger to corner of mouth to keep my gaps reasonable. Even tilting my head as far as I can, I can't get the string blur anywhere near the riser (and the string rubs on my glasses when I try!). It remains pretty far off to the right, almost in peripheral vision.@@JakeKaminskiArchery

I'm a left handed barebow shooter and I look through the bow, meaning the string is on the right side of my arrow point. If I look pass the bow (string is on the left side of the arrow point) as you suggest then I'm not able to hit the centre of the target but my arrows hit slightly right. I already played around with my button position (centre shoot) and button tension a lot but I can not figure it out. When I look pass the bow while aiming I always hit right. Which part of the bow setup do I have to change to get that right?

I went to the shooting range an shot my button from far out to as far in as possible before my vanes got contact with my riser. I am a lefty also. My string blur is on the left roughly just past the riser. I was consistently hitting to the right so would try to get the string blur more cantered . But by doing so it threw my head and form out of alignment. I dropped down to a softer spring in my plunger and it took care of the problem.

I'm still so confused by the physics of string-alignment. Can someone please explain to me what prevents the arrow landing left, if you don't have the string exactly behind the arrow, but slightly to the right of it? Is it related to centre shot? if so how? does centre shot and string alignment picture need to match?

The difference in a string alignment dead center to off center is less then 1” impact at 30m in my experience. It appears far off, but the real world results due to the affects of parallax it’s only 1” at most at 30m
