Melodious strings, lightly stummed: soft breezes brushing the tall palms; gentle waves toughing Hawaii's sandy shores---these are the ingredients of "Hawaii Style".
Throughout the years, the sting instruments have played the principal part in the music that is so much part of Hawaii. The instruments and the style of playing have changed, just as things change everywhere as time passes on, yet memories of this Paradise will be awakened forever when one hears the strains of a Hawaiian song transmitted into the air from a string instrument. The purpose of this L.P. is to present solos of all the sting instruments used to produce Hawaii's Music.
INSTRUMENTS:
UKULELE: Before the ukulele, the first and only string instrument was the primitive Bow "Ukeke" (pronounced u-k'e-k'e), which used three strings made of sinnet or horse hair. In 1879 three Portuguese musical instrument makers immigrated to the island, who introduced a six-gut stringed guitar. They later produced the UKULELE which employed four gut strings and which immediately began it's undying popularity because of it's versatility and convenient size that made it easy to carry around.
STEEL GUITAR: Joseph Kekuku of Laie, Oahu, accidently dropped his comb on the strings of the guitar he was playing and produce the first melodious sound we of today associate with the Steel Guitar. This "accident" (of approximately 1894) led to his further experimentation and final development of the Steel Guitar we now know and the technique for playing it.
AUTO-HARP: An instrument like the zither on which one strikes the cords and damps all other strings. This instrument was very popular in the islands during the nineteenth century.
GUITAR STYLES DEVELOPED BY THE HAWAIIANS
SPANISH STYLE: Spanish cowboys (Paniolos) immigrated from Mexico and Central America bringing with them the metal stringed guitar and a style of playing which the Hawaiians adapted to their songs.
SLACK KEY STYLE: The adaptation the Hawaiian cowboys developed from the Spanish Style. It was achieved by special timing with an odd style of strumming and chord changing.
TUAMOTO STYLE: Spanish Whalers who stopped on the islands of the Tuamotus near Tahiti taught their style of playing the Spanish Guitar to the natives who brought it with them to Hawaii.
The Ukulele and Guitars should be considered modern day instruments as for as Hawaii is concerned. The original instruments prior to these were the Musical Bow or Ukeke, Nose Flute or Ohe, and the percussion instruments such as the Pahu kettle type drums, the Conch Shell or Pu, the hardwood sticks or Kalaau, river bed stones or Iliili, the large gourd or Ipu, the small gourd with rattles and feathers or Uliuli, and the bamboo sticks called the Puili.
Most of these instruments are presented in solo with the addition of the Auto-harp.
