Thank you. You took the time & effort to share your knowledge with us, even though, clearly this machine was maybe not your first choice. Dropweight machines are the routine point of entry for most stringers, people like you help the people coming behind you. We all stand on the shoulders of people before us, please be nice to those who share...

Good vid…def covered the basics of the techniques. I’ve read all the comments and beings I’ve never strung a racquet, this certainly covered the basics well. I’m wanting to purchase a drop-weight stringing machine but don’t know which machine is better for relatively the same price…Gamma Progression II 602FC or the Gamma X-6FC model? Or any other model machine even if different mfg’r, near the same price point as the two I mentioned. I’m getting back into tennis after quite a hiatus and would like to string my own racquets as well as friends racquets. Kill some time after work anyhow and I’ve always wanted to learn how to string.

although cutting one string at a time may be best if you have one or two rackets, using strong scissors or garden shears may provide an alternative that results in less movements and wear on your muscles... just a thought.

Hey I really like this video, I think it's better than some of the drop weight tutorials out there. Quick question though, if I'm using flying clamps, would I need to pull tension for the first starting mains?
@doremi9
@doremi9 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you should tension all the strings. I like to use a starting clamp down at the throat on my 16 mains racket, protecting the frame with a piece of leather around the string on the outside of the frame. I pull two strings through and then clamp with my flying clamp down by the throat. I do two more stings one at a time on that side (right side) of the racket. Then I come back and deal with the starting clamp. I grab the string with the gripper and pull some tension on it, then remove the starting clamp and flying clamp, and continue ratcheting up till It's level or as close as I can get, then re-clamp with the flying clamp, and then continue on that side (left side) of the racket. Once I've got three strings tensioned and clamped on each side, then I alternate till I'm done, and then do my knots.

When the bar is above horizontal (14:18), the tension is LESS than desired. (Consider what the tension is when nearly vertical if this is confusing.)
@paulwal222

Agreed. I believe it is less when the bar is either above or below horizontal. I think he meant it'd be over-tensioned if you were to force the bar down to horizontal.

I know its an old video, but anyone run into the problem when doing the crosses the levers that locks the base of the clamps run into each other. This happens when you’re about 2/3 of the way thru with the crosses. Its when you can no longer swivel the base of the clamps away from each other because it starts hitting the vertical column that connects the base of the machine to the top mounts. Unless I’m doing something wrong, it makes you wonder why couldn’t they make the lever shorter.

Wrong way, You should place the first clamp on the center of the string. problem solved. I think this is a decent machine. just needs more labor but its pretty accurate. crank one is spring tension need to keep on eye on. electric one is always less tension but very convenient.

@brianbollmantennis

Honestly the tensioning system should be rock solid forever. Just be sure to watch for rust that's probably the number one killer. I dust my machine at the end of every day (mainly because I dont want dust/dirt) damaging the string) and then once a week I'll rub it down with a little bit of rubbing alcohol... clamps and tension head. The fact that your getting it second hand means you probably don't need any grease or lube (WD-40) like you sometimes need at the star.

Tennis rackets need at least about 20 kilos to function, some people even go up to 27 kilos or more. 16 kilos are definitely not enough, you'd have to increase the weight. Does a tennis racket even fit in there? EDIT: I just found out that some pros play with a string tension of 13 kilos or lower, so my comment was propably bullshit. But I don't know anyone personally that plays with 21 kilos or less.

@@SomeoneYouKnow2671 You are right. A tennis racket should be stringed with at least 18-20 kilos. But most play with 22 - 25 kilos. But no pro player play with 13 kilos.

@SomeoneYouKnow2671 4 жыл бұрын
@@juliusrokkjr1871 It's pretty rare, but some seemingly do. Or did. In 2009, Filipo Volandri played the French Open with a string tension of about 10 kg. In 2011, Leonardo Azarro played the Australian Open with a string tension of 13.6 kg. These players are by no means the very best of the best, but it seems that a racket with incredibly low string tension can be good enough for a spot in the rankings.
