What I love about stringing my own rackets is that it's an endless discussion machine for me and my friends to talk about. I can string my racket right before a huge match, I can watch KZbin videos while I string my racket to just the way I want it. I can try different techniques/tensions/strings/knots etc..it's almost like an art form!

I been stringing racquets since I was a kid for over 30 years and first learned on a archaic Tremont Research. I used several models from table top/stand alone, drop weight, cranks, and electronic pulls. Stringing knowledge comes with experience and I believe the stringing machine has only about 30% of the outcome. 70% comes from the skills/experience from the person stringing the racquet itself.

I'm always intrigued at the bad rap drop-weight stringing machines get. I believe the negative press drop-weight machines get can be attributed to at least three reasons: 1. Folks don't understand the physics of a drop-weight machine 2. The conviction that floating clamps can't maintain consistent tension across the full bed 3. The notion that if something is cheap (EG. The Klippermate) and very mechanical (as opposed to electric, digital, with bells and whistles) it can't be too good. I have used the Klippermate for 15 years or so for my own racquets and for a number of tennis friends. I have never had any complaints. Would a more expensive machine allow me to do some things more efficiently? Probably. If I were doing this professionally I would probably upgrade but not because I don't get accurate results with the Klippermate

Bought my Klippermate in '89 and still use it. I bet I've saved thousands. I switched to 17 gauge string 'cause I was no longer worried about durability and the expense of restringing. I think I paid maybe $135. I built a wooden box to store it and all the stuff in. I actually wore out the first set of vice grips and they replaced them for free. I have used their string too but now use Gosen OG Sheep 17. It's a great company and I recommend this machine to anyone who wants to string their own rackets.

I bought a Klippermate used with a matching yellow carrying case 4-5 years ago. I paid $150, had to sweat through learning, but KZbin helped me. I agree it saved me a bunch, but I only learned because most tennis shops closed in my area.

Drop weight with good clamps & technique. If u want consistancy, quality @low price. Skip all the lock out machines unless ur doing for business & volume...If u have money, go all the way and get constant pull electric. The reason I strated to string my own racquets using drop weight was because I couldn't stand anymore the inconsistent stringing from the shops. Mainly due to machine, and stringing technique inconsistencies.

Thanks Harry. I learned on and still use a Klippermate. I only string my own racquets. I bought one used because after a 10 year layoff from tennis due to shoulder problems, I found that all the tennis shops in NJ had closed. I didn't want to go to the big chain stores to string my racquets.

You are off a bit on the Gamma X-ELS machine loosing tension. You loose no tension with the spin tensioner as oppose to the pull tensioner.

The Gamma 6004 is a great machine to put a Wise on. It's a crank machine but it has features which the more expensive Gamma electric machine does not have: mainly the better clamps and mounting system.

i own an alpha drop weight w/6 point and fixed clamps. its true the crank and electric are faster but isnt drop weight more accurate as its a constant pull vs crank or even fixed pull electric? Also drop weight never needs recalibration. I guess the downside is its slower to tension....

To me: Go with simple machine if you string only for yourself + close friends. Go with advanced machine if you string as a business. Simple machines will do the job, and for your own rackets, you will get to "know" your machine well enough to compensate for it's shortcomings.

question on "10-15%" tension loss on entry level machine: that means, say you aim for 50lbs, it ends up only 45? that's significant! so you'd compensate that and target at 55lbs for an end result of 50lbs?

Why on earth should the dial electronic machine on the Gamma loose 5-10 % ? That machine is set and calibrated for the use and stops when it gets to the desired tension. The pull straight back machine also uses a wheely construction inside to pull the tensioner/diablo back. whether it pulls this straight back og downwords...this or that way... the engineers calculate for that.

Ugh i used to have the gamma one and it definitely got the job done but i definitely would love to have the babolat one. Constant pull automatic is much more accurate and easier to use :(

One thing I'll say is that when you own a stringing machine you don't necessarily save as much as you might think. The reason being is you're way more likely to string very frequently, whether you need to or not e.g. you fancy trying new strings/setup/tension etc. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, it's all part of the fun. You are also more likely to pay attention to your strings more often, because you know you can just go home and string the racquet. I don't find stringing fun, but I do the opportunity to try out new strings etc whenever I fancy without any hassle. I've really only been stringing for about 18 years, a number of them in a pro shop with the Wilson machine. Yup, that was great for the shop and basically essential for running challenger events, but for home/personal use totally unnecessary. The key to any machine is getting to know it and making sure your stringing is consistent. Cheers. 🎾🎾🎾

I own a drop weight machine, I´ve been stringing for 13 years. Considering in a shop they charge you 18$-25$ (local pros) for a string job, I´ve saved thousand of dollars, because I´m a chronic string breaker.

I had a cheap klipper mate machine in highschool and I snapped and cracked a couple racquets. Back then, it was traumatizing because I could not afford to buy new sticks.

I'm unclear why fixed clamps wouldn't also suffer from string slippage if they are poorly adjusted. I use floating clamps but I check for slippage and I adjust the clamping force depending on gauge and material. I find synthetic gut needs more clamping force than poly (at the same gauge) for example.

My first machine was the Ektalon that was owned by the shop I worked in. My first home machine was called a Serrano No-Awl. It was a beast, drop weight, and It lasted me about 15 years. Fast forward to about 4 years ago and I bought an Eagnas. It's an OK machine. Clamps can be a bit wonky but some fine tuning gets you a pretty good job. I haven't had to replace anything since I've owned it. I decided not to get a table top just for the speed and ease of standing like I did with past machines.

Great Video Harry - i always enjoy ur tips and tricks .. I had the Klippermate since 1989 - high school tennis -made up the money within 2 months.. and used it till 2005 then finally was getting way more volume so decided with the Gamma CrankShaft and then later upgraded the CrankSHaft with WISE and still using the same machine with same clamp etc... the machine is totally unbreakable.

@@herbv3449 I just bought 2 double clamps and it worked fine. The klippermate clamps are not as wide so it put a lot of pressure on the strings. But the technifibre strings were the only ones that were affected. I still use the klippermate clamps from time to time, because the stringway clamps don't open wide enough for really open string patterns. Maybe the triple would solve that issue?

I have a mistringer, bought it used from another guy. I strung about 8 racquets so far and so far no complaints for me. Tried the cross weaving tool and didn't like it, so I just use a nose pliers and my hand to string the crosses, it's pretty easy to do. Had to get used to the clamps too and figure out where to put it and make sure it doesn't clamp the strings too tight. When you first start off, you have to make the clamps a bit tighter so when you first pull down tension, the strings don't slip, but then if you clamp too tight, you'll see the strings will have a small indent from the clamps so something to point out. Just starting off and going to string locally around my area for friends and other ppl and then potentially save up for a gamma electric one. So far no one has complained to me yet haha so I like it so far! And it's super portable too

I agree with more money equalling less time and more efficiency, but I don't necessarily think it's more accurate. Maybe more precise, but not more accurate. I know that if I set my drop weight at 55, it will show me 55 on my luggage scale every time. But if I want to set it to 55.25 or some other fractional tension, it will require a more precise calibrator/luggage scale.

Hi Harry, great video on the old cheap Klippermate drop weight stringing machine. I had one of those in high school over 1/4 century ago as I would break strings often and stringers are not easily accessible. May I know how much you charge to string a tennis racket? I know you get lots of stringing jobs so your Return On Investment- ROI can be had in a year. But if you don't have many, how can one survive? Kindly advise. Thanks.

I have been using a Klippermate for many years. I can understand why someone might get the impression that the floating clamps are not as accurate. When I release the tension, the clamp rocks away about 1/8in from the frame. When I run the next row and apply tension, that clamp rocks back toward the frame. As a result, there is no loss in tension. The one area that is a weakness is the last row before a knot. There is no opportunity to take up the 1/8in of slack created by the floating clamp. I put extra tension on it and use more effort to pull the knot tight. Having seen the string move between rows of string, wouldn't the tension even out across the mains and across the crosses as the racquet is used in play?

I just started stringing using an older Gamma Progression ELS and it takes me 45 minutes now. When I started it took an hour or more per frame. I’m only stringing my own frames and I watch TV and need to double-check my crosses frequently to be sure I don’t screw them up.

The Wilson Baiardo machine is the best, I have one and been using it for over 8 years now. Great on your back and body when you need to string 10 racquets in a row.

I have 4 Baiardos. They have great features, but their quality is like everything else Wilson makes....... total crap. Every machine has had something break - I've had to replace the main control panel, numerous clamps, broken wires that I've had to solder. We use them a ton, but I had Star 3's and Ektelon/Prince Neos that were used just as much and never had problems. Once you get to about 30K string jobs (which is almost exactly the 5 years warranty for us), be ready to learn to work on them yourself, or spend thousands replacing them.

@P L...you've just answered your own question. 😂 My thoughts are...the Wise is long established and seem to last very well. They are an excellent way to 'upgrade' a crank or drop weight machine. However, for peeps on a tight budget it's not needed, but can be something that can be added down the track; perhaps due to stringing for friends at a Club etc. Overall they do make stringing a bit quicker than either of the above and you can add an accurate pre stretch if you want also. As you're happy with it, you'll never need anything more, unless you string professionally. 👌

@@pl4851 Used a Wilson for a number of years in the pro shop (where I worked and coached), it was awesome, but not something to aspire to unless you string in volume and for the pros. We ran challengers at the club, so strunging needed to be precise and fast during those events. Ummm...you can pre stretch polys also, not that I do, it's largely about how a player wants their strings to feel directly after stringing. You often hear players saying it took their strings 'x' amount of hours before their racquet really felt good. I suspect in many of those cases the strings were simply too tight and perhaps a pre stretch would alleviate that. Of course stringing a few lbs lower may have been a better option in the first place. I've not had much experience using a drop weight machine (cranks yes). I don't have any issues that they do a good job, just slow. I assume now you've got the Wise attached you'd never want to go back stringing with a drop weight. It's all round a more pleasurable experience (imo), has the memory function that is great for adding, let's say, an extra 10% for final mains (if you like doing that). The only thing I think that lets it down is the string gripping device -the way you need to use your fingers to hold the string in the gripper just prior to it being tensioned. I think wise could upgrade that quite easily, but you'd not want the price to rise. So, I guess they've kept it as is. Cheers. 🎾🎾🎾

I've played with certain strings that needs a day or so to become comfortable, yes you're right, as they start off little tighter. I usually go with lowering the tension a bit. Been using the WISE for good few months and don't want/wish to go back to drop weight :) especially the pain and time during pulling the tension. You're right about holding the string with fingers during the pull on WISE, just got used to it...but still a pain when using poly string as they don't want to sit in place... I set mine up with a decent 6 point head with 2 base clamp setup for the racquet with the WISE...had to put them together but I was happy to set up... cheers for your notes...

@@pl4851 Thanks for the reply...you'll get used to it and sounds like you've got a semi pro rig now. I think when you find a few strings you really like, start buying by the reel and look for special deals. That's when you get to really saving. Don't be afraid to try new set ups etc. The worst that can happen is you cut your strings out early and wasted a bit of time and money. I think that's one of the main benefits to having your home stringer is the ease in which you can try things out. Enjoy!! 🎾🎾🎾

I've strung racquets for two other people on my Klippermate. I only charged them $15 for labor, saving them trips to the medium sized city. I've noticed that some strings aren't pre-stretched, so I let the drop weight sit for 6-10 seconds, adjusting as needed. Also, I add 10-15# to the last string on the mains because flying clamps hold the tensioned string to the string before and the distance between the last two strings on each side is long, leading to more loss of tension after knot-tying. The only patterns I've strung are 16x18 and 16x19 for 100 and 98 sq.in. rackets.

@@aaronkim8158 Great question. Drop weight machines are extremely accurate. But stick with the same machine for each racquet (in case you have more than one machine--lucky you?) so if you change tension on the next job, you'll know what you're getting. If you're a racquet stringing newbie, the main strings are strung from the middle out. Increasing the tension 10-15# on the last main on each side really does help reduce the loss of tension in that string and probably in the rest as they equalize slowly over time with or without playing. It won't matter much in the first hour or three of playing, but ultimately, low tension in that last main will reduce the tension in the other mains You could buy a tension measuring tool, which I use to check right after stringing and periodically after that. Once you have your own machine, you might not care to measure tensions if you want to try different tensions and set ups every week or three.

@@aaronkim8158 No. Its not. There is a chart somewhere where it says for x weight you need to add y extra. For example to get 52 you might need to set it at 57. And it varies according to the string. If you string the same string with the same tension you will get better. As soon as you change the string then its again back to guessing

I know the question is from a year ago, but I started with a TR stringer...though after I was out of college. Still use the flying clamps (best I've seen) with the Ektelon H that I have been using for my sons, self, and some friends since about 1990, when I bought it used from a Sporting Goods store that was closing. I think I paid about $300 back then. Still going strong with just a few tweaks. But back to the TR Stringer. While the screw crank was tedious, it did do the job. I think I still have the base in a box somewhere...

@@delkeeney2471 heck yes Mr Keeney, I use those clamps and fly through a string job. I use the ektelon clamps on the last tie off string, and use those clamps for pulling the tie off knot. I still have the TR as a backup, albeit heavy repaired/modified after the 20+ years of using it. Mother bought it when I would break strings every week in high school. Saved close to a zillion dollars so far😂. Happy tennis-ing bro!!!!

@@agradina I´m a string breaker. I break strings every 6-8 hours or so. That´s almost every week. 52 rackets each year x 14 years x 4 dollars = 2912 dollars in string jobs. My machine costed me $200 dollars.

Klippermate clamps can be actually tighten if you want (not the easiest to adjust). It needs to be tight enough to leave teeth marks to properly hold tension.

Why do you believe what he says about klippermate floating clamps losing tension. I admire his videos on stringing rackets. However he does not provide any evidence for the lost tension with klippermate. Why should we just believe him!!!!!!

@@laurencecorray It's not just the Klippermate clamps, but floating clamps in general - as one string is the anchor for the tensioned string. When the anchor string stretches the tension in the other string is reduced.

@@rishijai Don't worry. It's the same phenom you see when fixed clamps give way when you release tension. Once you put tension back on, you're back to normal when either using fixed or floating clamps. The only issue is with the tie-off string that perhaps with a floating clamp, you may need to add a bit more tension than you would with fixed.

I am shocked and outraged by what you say about drop weight machines. You provide no evidence that stringing in a drop weight machine like klippermate results in loss of 10%-15% tension! Totally irresponsible of you as a professional stringer!

Maybe he´s right. I own a drop weight machine with floating clamps. A floating clamp always twist a bit (as it´s attached to an already tensioned string but the other string is loose). I think you lose tension there. But, if you keep your clamps (and gripping mechanism) clean and adjusted to string´s diameter, and you find the correct tension for you, there´s no problem, because drop weight machines are very consistent, they don´t get decalibrated.

@@miguelbarahona6636 sorry, "maybe" is not good enough for me nor should it be for any others who uses a drop weight. This stringer should provide evidence of loss of tension when using a drop weight machine. I shall however string a racket using drop weight machine and get a reading of the racket's tension after the stringing.

There is tension loss because of the floating clamps, not the drop weight.

I have a drop weight machine and I use floating clamps. I don't think that his comments were about drop weight machines, but more about floating clamps. He claims a 10-15% loss with floating clamps and, although I don't think that it's that much, I do think that fixed clamps do a better job at maintaining tension.

@@miguelbarahona6636 The clamp twists when you release tension and then twists back when you put tension back on .... Unless there's slippage inside the clamp, there's no loss in tension ..... Floating clamps are no less accurate than fixed clamps, except that they're a little more difficult to use. That's all. Manufacturers want to mislead you so you buy the expensive stuff that you don't really need.

Tension is not that critical if you string for yourself - what really matter is repeatability / consistency - and drop weight machine are good enough for this I was surprised by the fact that flying clamps are not so good - I have both systems and I prefer fstringway flying clamps to basic fixed one

Had a 2 point drop weight for over 20 yrs, always had to compenstate +/- 2-3lbs and has never truely accurate because you had to level by eye the weight. Let not mention the string movement of the floating clamos. Finally upgraded to a Gamma Prog II FC with a Wise8086 ... best thing ever. Reduced the time by half and it was accurate.

No need to use eyesight on a drop weight machine. Just place a spirit level on the lever and mark two points with a marker on the ratchet or cam when it's level!

I did have the 'marker' lines, but it was time to move on from it. It's a nice beginner machine, but just lacking overall after time.

String movement on floating clamps usually occurs: 1) the clamp is not clean (alcohol and a wype do the job). 2) the clamp is not adjusted for string´s diameter. Both things can be easily solved.
