You're not supposed to tie it either, you're supposed to untwist the end of the string and just place it around the bearing. Since offstring yoyos are built the same otherwise then by putting the string on it it should work like a "regular" yoyo. I actually take the string off one of my yoyos to try offstring every once in a while

How did I never know veritasium made this video? I'm a yoyoer (Ben Conde is one of my favorites) and I love veritasium. That's awesome! Edit: I remember when Ben Conde did his 2011 routine, he only got 4th place at worlds but his tricks were so difficult and risky, it's still one of the greatest offstring performances in yoyoing.

It's a yoyo because there is a ball bearing and response pads inside which allow the yoyo to spin for ages with a single throw and go back to the hand when you "bind" it. This yoyo style is called 4A or "Offstring".

This isn't all of yoyoing. There are 5 styles of yoyoing: 1A: String Tricks These are tricks that involve the yoyo landing on string segments. The yoyo is attached to a string, and that string is connected to your finger. 2A: Dual-handed Looping This is a style of yoyoing that involves loops, flips, stalls, Around the Worlds, and wraps, but with both hands. One of the more difficult styles, but one of the most thrilling to behold 3A: Dual-handed String Tricks The most difficult of the 5 main styles. This is the same as 1A, but you have two yoyos instead of one. It is considered the most complicated because a lot of the tricks involve twisting the strings together in some way. 4A: Offstring One of the easier styles. Commonly mixed up with the Diabolo. THIS IS NOT A DIABOLO. The string is not connected to the yoyo, allowing you to manipulate the yoyo in mid-air. 5A: Freehand/Counterweight The string is connected to the yoyo, but the string is not connected to your hand. a counterweight is used. This allows you to perform some very impressive tricks, but one of the most dangerous styles. If you are a non-yoyoer, instead of arguing with one, please do some research on the modern yoyo. Look at some competitions. Look at some yoyo trick tutorials. I had a toy back in the late 80s called a "yo-go" that was kind of like this. It had two silicone cones, a little like a butterfly yo-yo but significantly bigger, and I think it had a ratcheting bearing in the center. It was sort of a cross between a yo-yo and a diabolo. It was a lot of fun, though it took some practice. They never really caught on, though. I'm glad to see a related toy/skill set catching on.

am i the only one that alredy knew that there are styles of yoyo? 1A: normal tricks 2A: looping, 3A double normal yoyos (this one is for pros only ;) ), 4A Off-string (aka this video) and 5A i forgot because i don't do that one XD (btw if you know them differently don't say that i am wrong. we had an off-scool learning with one guy who has 1st place on EU championship 3 times :D he thaught us that it is 1A, 2A etc... i am used to call them like this, K? Thx 4 understanding :) )

It's an offstring (or 4A) style Yo Yo. It might's been inspired my the diabolo (Don't know about Yo Yo history) or something, but it is classified differently. That and only one side of the string is attached too something, whereas diabolo has a stick on both sides.

+ahah ihih no. The Diabolo was inspired form Chinese yoyos which were inspired by early yoyos . From that point, before the Diablo was created, the offstring yoyo was created first. So, no, it's isn't a capitalization on diabolos
