Since everyone's asking how to get started in touhou, here's an easily digestible rundown I wrote at 4am. Its hyper condensed but I'm sure some lore folks would be happy to correct some errors I have on top of providing more lore in the replies. >world starts industrializing >science and technology progress >this causes humans to stop believing in superstitions >this causes youkais to start dying off because they need human's belief in them to not poof out of existence >in order to prevent youkai extinction, a bunch of powerful youkai formed a council >they selected/created/whichever this remote land in japan called 'gensokyo' as their final domain >using their powerful magic, they spirit gensokyo away from the material world and into a pocket dimension >youkai from all over the world bailed the material world (also called as the 'outside world' by the denizens of gensokyo) because they can't survive there anymore >they all move into gensokyo >there's also a human village in gensokyo. It's all down to individual interpretation. Other characters might view her as random but lucky, while she might view it herself as intuition and gut-feeling. Gensokyo is a strange place populated by even stranger people, and the only character we never really see things from the perspective of is Reimu herself.

@@TheNextDecade244 Oh yeah, no that one's an interesting theory. I wasn't trying to say they're all wrong, more that Touhou is a very ambiguous setting, not much is actually well-defined. The only things that can be considered absolute fact are the few things ZUN writes meta-wise, like the "Who's Who of Humans and Youkai", and most of that wouldn't really be common knowledge to the average rando in Gensokyo, while more educated or curious characters like Akyuu or Aya have their own biases to how they portray people in The Chronicle of Gensokyo and Bunbunmaru respectively. All that said (sorry about the length, I tend to ramble) it would totally fit Reimu to be so caught up in her own desire to ignore her worldly problems that she just blindly stumbles into and disrupts whatever plots happen to be going on that day.

Yeah... It only gets more fun/crazy from here. The next in the series is based on a ghost who wants to make a tree bloom, so she steals all the spring from the land, hoping to break the seal on the tree, and resurrect the body underneath it... Not realizing that the body under the tree is her own body. Oh, also? The tree is evil, and the "no blooming" seal is there to stop it blooming because it makes people die, hence why Yuyuko's (the ghost) body is being used to seal it. Then the next game's plot is basically that one of four groups has a youkai go "Someone screwed with the moon, so we must fix it!", with their human companion (Who can't sense the issue with the moon, with exception of the Netherworld team, since Youmu is half-ghost, and thus, being half-youkai, can sense the issue with the moon) following along. You then fight a bug, a bird, a human teacher, and one of the other teams for the first four stages. Then for the last two stages, you finally get to the actual culprits, who are criminals (though their "crimes" are only criminal because the moon people are assholes) from the moon who ran away from the moon people (who, as i mentioned, are assholes), and have been hiding in a bamboo forest in the area for thousands of years (before Gensokyo was separated from the rest of the world), who severed the moon from the earth to hide from the moon people, who they believe to be coming for them- not realizing that Gensokyo, the place they currently are- is cut off from the outside world, and thus safe from the moon people that they're trying to hide from. ... There's a reason why people joke about ZUN being drunk while making the Touhou games. The plots tend to be kinda crazy in all the right ways. Oh, and most of the villains tend to wind up being chill and many even hang out at Reimu's shrine after getting beat up (except for the unnamed fortune teller from one of the manga. That dude got straight-up dead). The mangas can be just as crazy. In Silent Sinner in Blue, the SDM (Scarlet Devil Mansion) crew (which consists of the villains from the song here) create a rocket to invade the moon. (The moon people deserve it. They're assholes. I _cannot_ emphasize that fact enough.)

Fair warning, it may not be the hardest Bullet Hell out there, but it's still a Bullet Hell. In other words, it's pretty damn tough. The song here is about Touhou 6, which was the first Windows-era game. Sooner or later I'll actually look into touhou. All i know about it currently is that it was popular enough in 2010 for SC2 to have a touhou style minigame and that there exists music for it, now including this excellent piece.

I'd love to see more touhou covers come out of this; the choice in pacing, choir feeling, the bells and whatnot combined arent very common in touhou rock/metal; regardless, good original! Some of the choices reminded me of the epicness of songs like "It Has to be This Way"

It can be kinda hard to begin due to the amount of content. You can start with the games or the official mangas, but I suggest browsing a bit on the wikis first to understand the timeline and the character-relations. - Touhou is a highly character-focused setting, where the actions they do in one game often transfers over to the next and interacts dynamically. - You can also think of a set of characters belonging to one or more "Factions", which can aid how quickly you get a general overview of the plot (the opponents in this music-video belongs to the Scarlet Devil Mansion-faction, the next game's character features the denizens of the Underworld and so on)
