Strip varnish from wood veneer furniture to restore to original condition salvage project, using a proprietry paint stripper on varnish on a vintage hmv record cabinet in preparation for sanding staining and re varnishing.
SEE THIS CABINET BEING RESTORED RIGHT HERE • wood veneer antique re... for the varnishing video here
Stripping varnish from veneered wood furniture
1950s vintage H.M.V record cabinet, a typical piece of this period this veneered cabinet has been stripped and stencilled by its previous owner so i remove the recent varnish to restore the cabinet to its former glory using supadec all purpose paint and varnish stripper a non caustic biodegradeable product
one generous coat of stripper was all that was required to remove the polyurethane coating
i used a medium grade wire wool to remove the final specks of varnish from the delicate veneer
always remember to neutralize the stripper before trying to re varnish or paint the wood,use water this should be enough. depending on which kind of paint stripper you have used!
when everything is dry use a very fine wire wool or sandpaper and make sure you follow the grain to prevent scratching the veneer
it also a good idea not to oversoak wood veneer as this could lift the very thin surface.
warning please make sure you cover your skin and protect your eyes when stripping as paint stripper is caustic.
to dipose of the waste you may produce spread the used stripper onto newspaper fold up and throw away in your trash.

Thank you! I’m looking at DIY refurbishing a 50’s dining table with a veneer and found this. Super clear, I appreciate the tips on getting the stripper residue off and the close ups. Bet the finished product will look great

I just bought, at auction, a walnut veneer table thinking it was solid wood and was devastated to find out it was veneer thinking there was no hope for refinishing it. Watched this and the follow up video and am so thankful for your time an effort producing this. I feel confident I can make it shine again!

@Instone09ine How exciting!! I am a beginner at all of this. Repurposing my late grandmother’s 1954 TV cabinet into a bar. Lucky for me only the top really needs to be redone. I love the finished cabinet & the Victrola is fantastic! Thank you from Florida!

@Instone09ine

Hi Deanna this particular stripper was water neutralised, some other strippers could be white spirit neutralised although i dont use these as they can be very caustic which can cause nasty vapours and skin burns!😊

Great detail work, especially the removing of the spotty remnants of the stripper/varnish. It’s with it to be patient and thorough, with woodworking especially it’s hardly worth doing if you’re not going to be meticulous about doing it right. Is there any benefit to using furniture oil, water or some kind of lubricant when using the steel wool?
@Instone09ine

Thank you i will try the wire wool trick, it does make perfect sense and might stop it clogging up so quickly😊

Nice job but I just watched a video by another English guy whose a trained furniture restorer and french polisher and he suggest you need to apply the lacquer remover three times once remove with a scrapper and then apply again and removed with fine wire wool and he said he didn’t know why three but he was trained apply it three times. So not saying your technique is bad but just different but lovely job although I did like the small birds

Hi there, is it not possible to sand off the varnish? I have a 40's /50's bureau with veneer, if i sand it with a power sander, would i be able to remove enough varnish off it so that i could paint it? Or would i have to strip it first?

Great video! Would this work on wood veneer that has been stained rather than varnished? We aren’t sure whether it is stain or varnish... Thanks, in advance for your help!
@Instone09ine
@Instone09ine 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Gemma thanks for the message you could try sanding a small out of sight area and see if its easy to remove the varnish from the veneer, if it is just coloured with a stain or wax you might not need to use chemical stripper, you can uy a furniture cleaner like ESP to remove a bit of the colour 😊

After seeing how beautiful your veneer is again, i don't know if i can up cycle and paint over my veneer. Is yours a flame mahogany?
@Instone09ine
@Instone09ine 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Stuart it is a mahogany veneer. i would recommend sanding for a paint job but no need to be too rough as you just need to create a key for the paint, its also important to remove any built up polish/dirt which is important for the first coat to grip the surface. good luck with the project :)

I have a question, if I may. My Stanley MCM wood desk has a formica top and several layers of paint. Will the stripper damage the formica? Should I use something else, perhaps, to remove the paint. Thanking you in advance
@Instone09ine
@Instone09ine 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Raquel formica is incredibly tough! you should have no problem with it being stripped. I would do a little test area just to see how quickly the paint bubbles as you might only have a couple of thin layers to remove😊
