Dave I am 73 years old and have only a few heroes and you are one of them. Not for any single thing you do, but ALL of the things you do. Like that LONG horse ride you took, and the way you study the Bible, your character and demeanor. You are just a wonderful man that quietly represents his Creator. God bless you David Engels you are a true inspiration to all of us. Art, Melissa & Joshua from Ohio

Dave, your breadth and depth of skills are always fascinating to watch. What struck me the most in this video is that they would put this level of decoration on something as mundane as a manure spreader. I have found a similar theme in many of the older woodwrking tools I've collected and use. The past generations thought a lot about the things in their lives and the tools they used to make them. We live in a sadly different world today.

Never thought I'd see the day but here it is. There's the farmer looking at his manure spreader while scratching his head in wonder. His wife asks him what's the matter and he says, " Honey I don't believe it. They've gone & pimped my ride!" Sorry, couldn't resist. That is an incredibly job from start to finish. Thank-you for bringing us along.

Well Dave not only are you a master wheelwright and wagon maker but an artist as well. Amazing, love these videos! I met the guy who airbrushed/painted all of Karl Malone’s tractor trailer rigs when he was dabbling in trucking for a while. The artistry is inspiring. I never had the ‘art’ gene!

I forget sometimes that Mr. Engels is a really good sign painter. Natural talent most don't have. Holding that clean line is not as easy as he makes it look! Need good eyes (or glasses) and most important, a steady hand. This job came out lovely. Really makes the wagon pop. That little attention to details adds a lot. On a long day of manuer slinging, nice to know my rig looks totally awesome. Kinda surprised they painted them such bright colors, considering the job they're made for. haha!

You are right on not being as steady as you were years back. I build models of railroad cars and buildings. I'm definitely not as steady at 70 than I was 40 years ago.drilling a #80 drill is way too easy to break than it was back then haha

Have watched along since the days of the Borax wagons (or even before). The manure spreader has particularly fascinated me with the way they tackled rates of spreading, etc. You, sir, are a Master Craftsman and I look forward to many more fascinating revive/restore/build from scratch stories.

A couple of years ago I sold our old JD spreader. Ya know you get in a clean up things mode and it always comes back to haunt you. Would be a good project now. As long as you had a manure spreader around you had a place to get rid of your used motor oil. Wasn’t very “green” but it would keep the floor from rotten out. (and nothing growing under it) Love the restoration.

I really miss the days where I used to hand letter signs with a good ole striping brush and some One Shot. Nowadays, people want their signs yesterday and it's just not cost effective anymore. Don't get me wrong, I do really love vinyl it's alot of fun and I still love to make signs after 35+ years. But I miss the old days when I could sit down and just paint for hours and get in a zone just really enjoying myself. Beautiful job Dave

Hi Dave and Diane ☺, your doing a swell job striping the wagon, your hands steadier than my 75yr old hands, lol. Calling you a craftsman doesn't do you justice my friend, you are a master of your work that's for sure. Many years ago I rebuilt a motorcycle and my father striped it using brushes he made from my cousin Julie's hair, worked just fine, that made the bike one of a kind . Thanks for another interesting video mate, stay safe, best wishe's to you and Diane. Stuart and Megan UK.

It's amazing the detail incorporated into old pieces. Especially something like a manure spreader which would not remain long due to their use. I wish we still paid that same attention to detail now. Thanks, and really nice detailing.

My uncle was an old-school sign painter here in Boston in the 40's-60's. He used to say hand lettering had "swing". He was never keen on cut vinyl signage - said the sharpness of the letter hurts the eye to read it. Love your work, good sir.

I have certainly enjoyed watching your videos. You are a terrific craftsman with multiple skills. I am a retired sign man and have done a lot of pinstriping in the last 50 years and you impressed me. I hope there is someone who will be willing to learn the skills you have. There are so many of the "old skills" that will be lost forever unless some young guy makes the effort to learn them. I appreciate and admire all your many skills. Bless you!

Hi Roger, It's not just the signwriting is it ? It's all the other things that he can do as well. Then, when you take into account all the time that it has taken to get that Manure Spreader to this stage, it must be costing someone an awful lot of money. You need them too.

Marvelous, just marvelous! Couldn't make heads nor tails out of the pile of broken and rotting wood and rusty iron at the start, but you have restored not just the mechanical function, but the artistic perfection of an item of farm equipment that ordinarily doesn't get much respect - until it breaks down, that is! That is gorgeous manure spreader! My family and l enjoy and respect your work. Keep the videos coming, thank you!

I think this work is an incredible restoration and most beautiful completely worthy of praise, And extraordinary. By that I mean I find it historically extraordinary that a manure spreader would have had this kind of detail for what it actually does (and generally gets covered with). Farmers had pride back then as well. Most amazing after growing up on a dairy farm in the 1950's.
