what do you prefer ...Battlestar or Lucky Craft?
@mikestacklebox4 ай бұрын
Currently a battlestar in the right conditions. With my particular waters it requires to dig a lot deeper yet suspend the lure at times.

Let’s gooooo 💯. I’m just getting into surf fishing and watching the heck out you KZbinrs. I’d be fishing from Monterey to bodega bay because that’s the closest. May I ask what your rod reel line set up? Thanks for what you do.
@mikestacklebox4 ай бұрын
Thank you first of all.. Monterey to bodega that’s a stretch. My set up is a Phenix trifecta 1003” 1/4-3/4lure rating. Van stall vr50 power pro super slick v8 main line.
@hvega81994 ай бұрын
Awesome thanks. Yeah pretty much Monterey to bodega and everything in between. Hopefully twice a month I can get out there. I went semi budget on my rig just to see how much I’d like it. Went 2 weeks ago to half moon bay and got skunked but man it was fun. Totally different from my little UL trout world 🤣. My set up is 10’ Okuma rockaway medium Penn pursuit 4000 Reaction 20lb braid Reaction 20lb pink fluro. I used a few to-zuri LC baits. I need to check out battle star. 🤙🏾

@@hvega8199 sounds like a good set up on a much heavier/windy day using metals like cast masters or mickey’s for example. Mainly the fish have been much smaller baits and profiles like 115-130mm jerkbaits. Look into a setup as well that is lighter that will accommodate 10’ 1oz lure rating if the energy and wind is down. Makes it that much enjoyable to throw as well as keep the stamina up.
@hvega81994 ай бұрын
@@mikestackleboxdefinitely. Hopefully getting my next set up for lighter stuff here soon. If any recommendations on a budget under $160.00 👍🏾.

@@hvega8199 definitely a rod in the okuma line up like rockaway is good start around the $120.00 range.

Dang you are absolutely slaying the striper! Since I caught my last striper it’s been a solid 50 hours of casting with only big smelt and perch. I’m throwing mekeni swimbaits, jerk baits and kastmasters with no striper success. Do you have any ideas why I am so bad at catching striper? 😅
@mikestacklebox4 ай бұрын
Talk to me about your setup and we can also discuss about wind, conditions and wave energy for example.
@Ducky2o4 ай бұрын
@@mikestacklebox I use a 9 foot medium rod with a 5000 reel running 25lb braid to a 25lb clear leader. I always try to fish right before and after high tide. The wind is usually 5-10 mph and wave power 400 - 1000. The only reason I can think of for my lack of striper success is the beach I fish on, Manresa State Beach, not having enough striper but every outing I see at least 1 being caught. 🤷♂️
@mikestacklebox4 ай бұрын
@@Ducky2o I understand that.. have you considered softshelled sand crabs which is always automatic. Unless you have a personal goal to catch them on a lure. If that is the case having a few selections like a 7/8oz Sp minnow chrome, bone , or even a battlestar. Just have to ask yourself what is you end result. Finding particular holes that will hold semi deep water but an area that isn’t constantly crashing. Generally speaking water that is presentable for you lure not quite the other way around and not having to chase it down if that makes sense.
@Ducky2o4 ай бұрын
@@mikestacklebox I appreciate the advice. My goal is to use artificial so I’ll try throwing different colors next time. My worst fear is just that there is simply not enough decently sized striper near Manresa for me to be consistently catching them. Tight lines 👍🐟

I haven’t fished Stripers outside the Gate since the early/mid 70s…I did the party boat trips where the boat would back into the breakers, and we’d fly line live anchovies…needless to say, it would aggravate the hell out of the surf casters…but the fish were BIG…20#-30# Stripers were common….

@@mikestacklebox I did it 3-4 times…it wasn’t always a madhouse…but when the Stripers were there (mussel rock, Linda Mar, Pacifica) and feeding, it was unbelievable..multiple fish on at a time, deckhands and the skipper scrambling….i think they were looking to see who had the bigger fish,mand went for the smaller fish early…the strikes were savage…
