Stripping an Ambulance in 30 Minutes

Hey Dan & Ham, I used to build cop cars, both undercover and standard marked cars, but have also had a hand in an ambulance build. The relay box that you showed at the end of the video is a stand alone system that should have its own high powered amp circuit breaker from the battery compartment. The center console controls all have wires running to that relay center. Tampering/ removing or cutting any of those wires will NOT affect the ability to drive the vehicle nor will it affect any of the standard headlights/tail lights. There should also be a stop light triggering device, to change it green if its red, in the center of the windshield that is activated by the exterior lighting controls. IF you wish to keep that, probably don't show it in video as its not exactly legal to have since its considered "tampering with traffic lights". Best of luck on the rest of the tear down/build!

Id recommend getting rid of the MIRT if they have one. Where I'm at it takes a picture when we use it and if its not an ambulance going code 3 or a cop car its punishable by something, not sure what though.

@12:57 Those are affectionately called the "antlers" The stretcher locks into that device. When I was an EMT, we cleaned the floor fairly often. At least once a day. An old partner of mine is going to take an old ambulance and turn it into an RV.

As an EMT, I would not be touching the floor of any ambulance without gloves haha. Especially the antler clamps. Glad you put them on. By the way, just the release rod, fastener and the antlers cost about $800 new.

At work on an ambulance rn and can confirm that the floor is cleaned fairly often (maybe once a week), but the grip on the flooring absorbs dirt and crap like nothing I've ever seen.

Dan in case youre reading this dont be concerned by a bunch of extra wires, I converted a shuttle bus and it was the same way bc whoever made the ambulance basically makes one harness to fit all vehicles and options that they make. when i tore mine apart I just started the interior/ rear lights wiring from scratch to clean it up. Probably took out like 10 pounds of un needed wiring

If I had to make a guess based in the light fixtures and the ford speakers that is known as a remount. The box was probably originally on a ford E series van, then removed placed on a newer chevy and updated. It saves EMS services money to do it that way. Not sure if you'll see this, but now that you've stripped an ambulance down. Do you think it's a good platform for a motorcycle hauler/camper, or do you think I would be better off with a short bus that only has seats to remove? My plan is to make a ramp with a front wheel lock like a lift on a slider mechanism and use a small winch to load and unload the bike and then do a fold down bed, a small cook area, and storage for clothes and supplies.
