R380 = rated for 380Nm input (280 pound feet force) LT77 = British Leyland 77mm shaft spacing (distance between lay shaft and main shaft) Type A gearbox prefixes: - 50A; 51A; 56A; 58A; 60A; 61A; 66A; 68A; 70A; 74A (Long Stick - Defender R380) Type B gearbox prefixes: - 53A; 55A; 63A; 67A; 69A; 73A (short Stick - Discovery R380) Type C gearbox prefix: - 18A Type D gearbox prefixes: - 64A; 65A The letter at the end of the serial number is the series type. Most R380s are J series but there are some K and L out there. Advice: once you can read your gear box serial number WRITE IT DOWN and save it.

Hi again, I’ve come to a stop with it... I can’t get the nut off of 5th with my breaker bar and 32mm socket and haven’t got an impact gun. Basically when I put the rag though it either ends up going through the gears or twisting the whole gear box 😩

Hi, your videos encuraged me to open my old R380 of my dicovery 2 to renew it. I found that the syncro body up and the sellector ring of the 5th/reverse with the with five notches is facing the reverse syncro and gear wheel, i've tried to find free movement setting when the five notches facing the 5th gear wheel and it didn't match. It works good only when the notches towards the reverse. 1st and 3rd notches are okay. What's your opinion please? Thanks for responding

I have seen this before - the hubs bed in and do not like being swapped over - but the inner hub needs to be in the right direction - if it was working OK in the past - then leave it be

Hi Frind, great video; it helped me. But I have a quick question: The main shaft on my Land Rover 300TDI is worn out like yours, and the gear that goes into their inner splines is damaged. My question is, if I replace the gear with a new or second-hand one, will it match, or will it make noise? Should I go for new gear? Please advise.

Another great video as always Mike. Can I pick your brains for a moment? I heard a grinding/loose metal sound yesterday coming from the clutch/gearbox area. I've been poking round today and it seems to only happens when under load, so I'm thinking of ruling out the clutch. Although it drives fine, I'm understandably concerned. After watching your video I'm pretty sure I don't fancy trying to rebuild a gearbox. Any suggestions to check before I take it to the local mechanics (who I don't have any faith in sadly) and consider buying a refurbished box.
@BritannicaRestorations4 жыл бұрын
It could be a clutch bearing on the way out Nick. Hard to tell without seeing it

@@BritannicaRestorations thanks Mike, I'll keep investigating. The clutch was replaced last year so it shouldn't be an issue unless I didn't install it correctly (not ruling anything out)

@@BritannicaRestorations Okay thanks Mike. I’ve had all sorts of theories like oil wearing the inside of the casing to there being internal pilot bores that are routed in such a way to indicate a leaky seal. Your diagnoses makes much more sense because it happened very suddenly, no signs of weeping to suddenly a fairly major leak. Thanks for your help.

That 3 bolt mounting is for the adaptor for a gearbox lift - so you can balance the gearbox and transfer case when taking it out

hi and thanks for the video again!! In your opinion is it possible to change to Prime Motion shaft bearing during an engine out clutch change (as have some noise in neutral with clutch not engaged) without removing the R380??? Thanks if you get tiume to reply
@BritannicaRestorations5 жыл бұрын
I had to think about this! Technically maybe, practically no. I have difficulty getting the bearing off the shaft in the vice, so in the box would require some advanced skill Also when fitting new bearings the box would need reshimming It is common for the R380 to chatter - it seems to be the clutch plate springs that are the culprit Mike

Ha!
