Before you get too carried away, check the propshaft Universal joints, the rear drive flanges in the axle (if it is a 110), and the front axle CV joints You can check the transfer case by removing the round rear cover on the back and see if there is any wear on the gear/output shaft spline

The input gear rarely wears out on later vehicles. The clunk is almost always worn splines on the front or rear output stub shafts, or bad backlash in the diff, or worn gears in the diff.

Hi, I’ve been watching you show for a few months now. Really enjoying and learning quite a few bits. I am getting my Defender 200tdi back on the road. I swapped the LT77 for an Ashcroft R380+stumpy. And ran into a bit of a challenge. All went well, transfer case & gear box went in fine and all gear selections & transfer selections worked well. While checking the brakes etc by rocking back and forth the transfer case locks up when in gear even when the gear box is in neutral. When the transfer case is in neutral all works fine. In neutral it is free. When adding new oil to the transfer case I accidentally mistook a bolt on the side of the case as the filler plug realising the mistake I did it back up. It didn’t seem to connect anything but I am thinking that perhaps it did. In your video when you have the case on the bench you can see the bolt I am referring to. It’s on the input side of the case an has about a 20mm head. I can’t find and reference to it’s purpose or function in any of the manual I have. Could this be my problem? At the moment I am confused and frustrated. You help would be greatly appreciated. I can send you a screenshot of the bolt if that would help. Cheers Dallas.
@BritannicaRestorations2 жыл бұрын
The bolt is for a temperature sensor - mainly fitted to automatics When you say locked up, are you sure the diff lock is not engaged?
@dallasnichol50242 жыл бұрын
@@BritannicaRestorations thanks. That was a quick response. I got to the bottom of the issue. 2 of the bolts connecting the transfer case to the gearbox case actually penetrate into the transfer box near some of the gears. It had accidentally used the longer bolts at those points. They were only 5mm longer but that is enough for them to restrict the movement of the gears. So glad I tested the transmission line by rocking the car by hand rather the off the engine. I could have been rather catastrophic error rather than a frustration and a bit of rework. I do really enjoy your show. Cheers Dallas

Interesting video. I have done rather too many gearbox and transfer box changes and I find it easier from the top. I put a piece of 2 x 4 across the two bulkheads and use a ratchet strap to support the weight. A jack can be used to adjust the alignment. You still have a bit of a fight but it is easier.

It doesn't! When in LOCK, the planetary pinion gears cannot rotate, effectively negating the action of the third diff - in others words it is the same as any other makers 4x4 when 4x4 is selected. Front and rear drivelines locked together.

Cheers Mike, We are working on a 1993 NAS Defender 110 with the V-8. It came to me with a howl from the rear diff. Classic presentation were it howled with light throttle but not under hard acceleration or de-cell. After replacing the ring and pinion, the howl remains and appears to be coming from the T-Case! Are we looking at bad bearings? This poor thing only indicates 70,000+ miles... George in Nevada

excellent video mike,whats your thoughts of overfilling the transferbox oil all the way to halfway mark of the plate on earlier transfercases so that the output shaft of the gearbox gets lubricated ? i know its not recommended but would like to hear your thoughts on it.
@BritannicaRestorations2 жыл бұрын
Too much oil can be as much of a problem as too little! With the cross drilled input gear or the oil feed plate, I think the issue has now been solved - but it took many years and many expensive gearbox rebuilds to solve the problem! I am quite surprised LR didn't put a small drilling in the gear itself, so oil would be pushed into the spline like they did on the series boxes

Hi Mike, thought I’d change the gearbox oil on my 94 defender 300TDi, (R380) there was red ATF in it (looked like it anyway). Well, I looked up the forums and read that MTF94 was being recommended, so used it, I would definitely say she’s not as smooth going into 2nd (first thing, but after a few minutes, when everything warm, she’s fine). Should I change back to the ATF? WWMD - What would Mike do? :)

@BritannicaRestorations2 жыл бұрын
If you mean the Roverdrive, the input gear comes with the overdrive and the unit uses the LT230 lubrication for overdrive and LT320- highly recommended to fit the high capacity sump with cooling fins as they get very hot!

@@BritannicaRestorations No I am thinking of the PTO for a winch or other stationary machinery.
