Korgalzhyn Highway is the southwest highway of the capital, leading towards the Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve. This reserve is one of the two Kazakhstani reserves listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites within the Saryarka - Steppe and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan. The Korgalzhyn Reserve, situated 130 km southwest of Nur-Sultan, was established in 1968 to preserve the unique wetlands, which serve as habitats for flamingos, curly pelicans, and other birds.
At the 36th kilometer of the highway lies the village of Akmol, where in the mid-20th century was located the Akmolinsky Camp for Wives of Traitors to the Motherland (ALZHIR), the largest Soviet women's camp, one of the many "islands" of the "Gulag Archipelago." In 1938, the camp housed around 8,000 female prisoners.
