LYRICS (FR)
[Couplet 1]
Mais oui on se connait bien
T'as même voulu t'faire ma mère hein
T'as commencé par ses seins
Et puis du poumon à mon père
Tu t'en souviens ?
[Refrain]
Cancer, cancer, dis-moi quand c'est ?
Cancer, cancer, qui est le prochain ?
Cancer, cancer, oh dis-moi quand c'est ?
Cancer, cancer, qui est le prochain ?
[Couplet 2]
Et tu aimes les petits enfants
Décidément, rien ne t'arrête toi
Et arrête de faire ton innocent
Sur les paquets de cigarettes
"Fumer tue", tu m'étonnes
Mais tu m'aides
[Refrain bis]
Cancer, cancer, dis-moi quand c'est ?
Cancer, cancer, qui est le prochain ?
Cancer, cancer, oh dis-moi quand c'est ?
Cancer, cancer, oh cancer
[Pont]
Quand c'est, quand c'est
Que tu cesses tes avances ?
Quand c'est, quand c'est
Que tu pars en vacances ?
Quand c'est, quand c'est
Quand est-ce que tu y penses ?
Quand c'est, quand c'est ?
Ça nous fera des vacances
[Refrain]
[Outro]

Didn’t know about the translation until today. But holy hell, does it hit deep! My husband is a cancer survivor and he completed his chemotherapy around this time last year. This song perfectly translates the pain into words about how damaging cancer is and the distressing impact it can have on everyone around them. Lyricism/visuals such as these are one of the main reasons why Stromae has been one of my top artists this year and I’m so happy that he’s making music again!

This is my favorite Stromae song. I used to listen to it on repeat and dance to it in middle school. It reminded me of my brother who after birth lived in the hospital for ten months before coming home for three months and passing away. This song encapsulates what I imagine as his life. I can’t understand the lyrics but I can feel the meaning. My brother couldn’t make a single noise, never crawled or walked he was ironically a happy soul tho rarely cried (you could only tell by his facial expressions because there was a tube cutting through his vocal cords). He was tiny and this cage of a body was his reality. There was horror in his disease but he knew of no other reality and wasn’t burdened only held back by it, both enslaved but free. This song represents this conflicting life for me, I can’t understand the lyrics but this experience I can feel. I am taken back and can feel the horror in this song. A horror neither bad nor good, neither regretted but rather wishful that my precious brother wasn’t trapped by the tragedy of death and disease even tho his spirit while he lived was an especially joyous and memorable one even from my 10 year old eyes.

The depiction of cancer as something creeping and insidious, with his movements appearing distorted and in parts inhuman, and the creeping, destructive limbs is really powerful. Cancer is something that grows and destroys with its growth. It takes root. This is so amazing, and the song itself is delightfully, terrifyingly haunting. This entire composition, from the effects to the choreography to the music, is beautiful and so incredibly *viscerally* painful.

Currently battling TMJ (aka the suicide disease) I’m in the middle of another flair up and I came to listen because this song eases my mind and brings me peace momentarily. Nerve pain all over my head and even in other parts of me body. Constant fatigue strained eyes nerve shocks all over my head aching clicking jaws, sore throat and earache all happening at the same time. Idk how I’ve been surviving this long. (Outside of Oxys snd Ectasy pills) But the visuals in this video demonstrate what I feel this terrible disease would look like personified. Thanks stromae for creating this masterpiece. To anyone reading who’s battling any chronic illness. I wish you much peace and strength in your fight.

Stromae's videos still continue to bring me to an awe. Perhaps as an American I am too used to the egotistical lyrics pumped out by my culture. So Stromae's videos are a comfort that at least somewhere, someone can make music and videos that remind us what it means to be human. Our equally shared struggles and fears.

I remember when I first came across stromaes music years ago. His music is all amazing, but this song in particular really stuck with me, along with the video. I felt he really portrayed my worst fear; being unable to protect my loved ones. I’ve always been scared of cancer, not for me, but for my family, it’s terrifying knowing that I am completely helpless to something like that….. My sister got recently diagnosed with cancer. And it brought me back to this song, im choosing to see the best in her situation and I truly believe she will make it out okay, but this has reminded & revived that original thought of mine. And I now live in a constant state of fear that asks “who’s next?”

I used to be obsessed with this song for awhile but didn't really get it until now. My mom was diagnose with bile duct cancer last year. They said she only had 6 months left. The cancer doesn't disappear but my mom is still here with me. Now this song really speaks to me in another perspective. I wish my mom wouldn't become a white shadow.

Merci Stroma!
