It's a song about the forgotten, those who collect the glasses when others clink glasses, those who keep the locker room or clean the toilets while others have fun. The title could be translated as "Cheers!, your (good) heath!". It's a song about contempt for social classes, the crowds of people and the little country folk, the little ones. It's a very intelligent song. He sings: "I want to raise a glass to those who don't have one."

What is amazing is what this song is actually about. It's about celebrating the cleaners, bar tenders, coat checks etc who facilitate all our nights out and who never get the chance to celebrate, and the key workers like nurses, teachers, cab drivers, hospital porters who work through all the fun times. Wonderful point of view, and it's an absolutely fabulous song. and I haven't heard anyone roll the R's so beautifully since George Brassins! He's just epic in every way!
@casus47812 жыл бұрын
We will "celebrate" (whatever that means) nurses, teachers and cleaners but they will live and die in poverty while Hollywood producers will be filling their bathtubs with champagne and caviar. But we will celebrate the cleaners and nurses allright (and that celebration will cut a nice profit to the producers too).
@jazz6242 жыл бұрын
@@casus4781 Which is why all these workers need fair and equal pay that can support both their lives and their passions.
@casus47812 жыл бұрын
@@jazz624 Nah, to achieve that, fair sharing of the profits will be required and the producers and Hollywood royalty will struggle to fill their bathtubs with champagne and diamonds. So no can do, sorry. More than happy to "celebrate" the workers though (for a nice royalty to me). Parasitizing on the vulnerable is hugely profitable. Won't pay them, but will gladly "celebrate" them.

@@casus4781 true. I’m all for socialism but I think we have a long way to go because the insanely rich just want to keep getting richer. It’s never enough for them. But yea, sharing wealth is needed for sure.
@casus47812 жыл бұрын
@@jazz624 My brain just refuses to accept that we still think that it is cool (and not shameful) for all those useless ultra-rich to brag on camera about their ridiculous wealth, 10,000 pair diamond incrusted shoe collections, etc. People who ensure that the most essential things in our lives work struggle their whole lives working every single day on minimal wages. "Reality TV stars" and daughters of Hollywood producers who haven't done a day of honest work in their lives are glorified on TV 24/7 bragging about their shoe collections. This world is insane and terminally ill.

Celebrating cultural differences and meshing them is something that Stromae has done for years now. Im going to go obvious but his track Papaoutai is about his Dad that was killed during the genocides in Rwanda but was not present during his life much even before this. Its filled with duality, the child's searching for his father is both tragic and prophetic, the child wonders where his Dad is and without a father figure he worries will he be able to become a father. Even the title has double meaning, with the title also passing for the phrase to trick someone and Daddy where are you. All this while blending European house music with African rhythms and strings and the Rwandan tradition of story telling. Im glad he is expanding his musical pallet and turning his musical expertise on new sounds and traditions.

I first heard Stromae from Alors En Dance when I was teaching English in Morocco. It was huge. As far as I'm concerned, he's reinvented French Chanson, and while my French is terrible, Stromae's songs have probably made me cry more than anyone else--his backstory reflects the tragedy, sadness, and wistfulness of anyone who feels a stranger in their own land. The sadness transcends language. He's a huge talent, and I'm SO glad to see him performing again.
