regardless, george is playing a barbara walters game here. he's trying to push emotional buttons for an emotional reaction. giamatti is interesting enough without having to go down that road. he's one of the finest actors in the biz! when i want to see an emotional reaction from giamatti i'll watch his films ... not dig into his personal life.

highly unlikely with this case. paul clearly did not want to talk about his father. look closely, his demeanor completely changed from relaxed, to passive aggressive. and what's up with that question "who do you want to say sorry to?" what is george a therapist now? stupid question with no relevance to anything. george blew this interview. mr. giamatti displayed both tolerance and class.

Why can't more hosts do real interviews like George? He's the best. Usually the deepest interview question is "What was it like on the set?" George is amazing, but more interviewers would be amazing too, if they actually got to know their subjects. I don't understand why we (as the audience) don't demand more of our hosts.

I didn't get the impression that he didn't want to talk about his dad or that he seemed overly put out by the line of questioning. Certainly he was emotional, but that doesn't mean he was unhappy with it. But I do agree that the question, "who do you want to say sorry to" is odd. I think George has interviewed him before, and I don't know if that was a hangover from a previous interview.

being an experienced interviewer, George knew that this "surprise" clip of his father would cause an emotional reaction from Mr. Giamatti. George completely crossed the line by doing that. He sucker punched him. If i was Mr. Giamatti, I would've walked off the set. You can easily tell that he wanted to, but showed some tolerance and class instead. Yes, interviewers need to ask important questions, but there is a better way to go about it.

How is that being manipulative? It was something meaningful to Giamatti and he seemed to be moved by it. I'm glad Strombo asks meaningful, deep questions, rather than just falling all over himself praising the people he interviews and praising them endlessly.

He is one of my favourite actors and is very underrated. Fantastic in Win Win and Sideways and should have got an Oscar nomination for that. He has an onscreen charisma that is unlike what most performers can pull off.

It's quite possible that George checked it with him before he showed it. I remember an interview years ago where a clip of a performer's dead father was shown in an interview with him, and some people felt it was inappropriate, but it turned out the performer had asked the interviewer to show the clip because he wanted to talk about what his father meant to him.
