The Strong Arm Merkin is a fly originally tied by Dave Skok and features some interesting tweaks to the classic merkin fly. In this video I try my best not to do a variation of this fly but to stick to the script..kinda..ENJOY!

I tie similar merkins for rockfish, here in Cali. I mixed the deer hair crab and OG merkin, never heard of this variation. I tied it with 2 arms though, and chenille legs. More of a fleeing crab.

On the Dave Skok design, he uses some type of resin (UV, probably) on the claw itself to stiffen the chenille, and hold the claw in an open position. I think the idea is not so much the look of the fly but rather the keeling effect of the chenille arm on the fly.

Yep. Glue or uv resin both work fine.

Nice work. FYI, don't want to pick nits, but I'm pretty sure the arm needs a shot of that UV goo to keep it straight and acting like a keel

Just saw this. We have some species out here in southern California that eat crabs. (We even have bone fish) I don't think many guys fish crab patterns tho. This could be effective in our local bays.

I would really love to know what exact chenille that is, I can't find any shops by me that have any and I've order 3 different ones online and can't seem to find one that's stiff and rope-like like the one used in the video. They are all very thin in the actual core and most of the thickness is like a brushy synthetic that flakes off and is pretty flashy. Please help lol
