This was actually pretty common in cartoons. Any time metal "culture" was involved in cartoons, there was never any actual metal music played, mainly because there was still the stupid stigma that metal was evil, and listening to it would turn you evil (because metal is awesome). Like there was a villain in GI Joe (was it Zartan?) who was apparently a heavy metal singer/enthusiast, and one of the episodes revolved around him and his heavy metal band going to corrupt youths or some garbage, but when they played it was VERY clearly some sort of synth wave music, and not even close to metal.
