Strength training is very good for grappling-power for striking. So, to be a complete fighter, you need to combine grappling and striking when lighting is optimal to combine power and pure strength training styles.

Jose Urtain heavyweight champ of Europe in the late sixties and early seventies was a champion stone lifter in his native Spain before becoming a boxer. He was a good puncher but was easily outclassed by Henry Cooper and others. Maybe with an American trainer and better sparring he could have gone further. In physique he greatly resembled Rocky Marciano but not in the ring.

There was a story of how Muhammad Ali was looking for a European opponent and went to Spain to watch Urtain fight, Urtain scored a knockout and Ali went into the ring and started being Ali, making a racket, challenging Urtain to a fight, etc. Urtain supposedly grabbed Ali and military pressed him over his head. The fight never happened.
