Big chunky knives are fun, but they're also useful for outdoor stuff. My SR-1 Tanto is basically a hatchet. I use it to split logs and chop branches off, and it never complains.

i edc, a spyderco assist with rust proof h1 steel. great knife for emergency’s, and i edc in the other pocket an old school discontinued coldsteel scimitar serrated 4 inch blade with the titanium liners and vg1 steel. made in japan. 😁

I carry my 4max elite everyday in my waist band and it’s my most used knife along with my stretch or Endela in the left front, just ordered the 5 max but damn didn’t realize how much wider it is. Love the AD10 and 4Max Scout and I carry them all the time. Looking forward to adding a 5Max to the collection but I'll probably wait for an AUS10 version due to the price. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable

I love my AD10 too. It is the most comfortable knife handle out of all my folders. I have a question for you if you don’t mind. I have never held the 4Max, but I am interested in it. I think it would work well in my ready pack. I would normally just use a fixed blade. In all honesty my AD10 is probably enough. But it stays in my pocket. I think the 4Max would be a good choice for my pack. Because it is a bigger knife, and it is foldable which makes it easier to pack in a outside zipper pocket. Lastly the Triad lock is exceptional. Since you have both. Does the 4Max handle have the same level of contouring and comfort as the AD10? Would you recommend having both the AD10 and the 4Max? Since it is for a ready bag. Would you recommend the Scout version? I don’t know if it has the same handle or not either.

​@@ĶČXXĻ-ĀxÐfor myself I'd carry one or the other as they fit the same usage. For guys with really large hands the 4Max is the better option. The scout version has flat scales where the original has scales that are contoured like the AD10. As far as the steel goes I'm happy with the performance of the AUS10 in regards to toughness and ease of sharpening and maintaining, but the S35VN will give you much better edge retention although you may want to use diamonds when sharpening the S35VN. I Use a worksharp guided field sharpener when I'm in the outdoors so it'll handle any steel type I throw at it. The 4Max is definatly the better chopper though if you plan to use it as such given the extra handle lenght gives you the better leverage. Both are great cutting tools but for serious outdoor stuff I still carry a large fixed blade that will get more work done. As for a bug out bag hard to go wrong with the 4Max Scout when it goes on sale for $50 on occasion it's a ton of hardcore knife for the money and allows you to throw a sharpener in with it without breaking the bank and it is a better chopper than the AD10 like I said before but both will hold up to alot of abuse. @@ĶČXXĻ-ĀxÐ Yes, get a 4Max, you won't regret it. Yes, get the Scout version, you won't regret it. Yes, get more than one Scout - one for the go bag, one for EDC. The Scout is very affordable nowadays, lower price than ever. As for comfort, the AD-10 handle wins in some ways, but there is something special about the comfort of the 4Max though. They are each "more comfortable" in a different way. The 4Max BEGS you to choke up, and it feels especially good when you do it. I have the Scout version (multiple ones). The FRN texture isn't as magical as G10, but the AUS-10A is great, and for 20% of the price of a "full" 4Max, the Scout is a great value and you can buy 4 of them (in various colors) and still be cheaper.

Cold Steel all day long. I own; Ti-lite 6 in AUS-8. Talwar XL serrated in CTX, Talwar 4" serrated in CTX. XL Vaquero serrated in AUS-10. And an XL Talwar serrated in SV35. Would like to pick up the Mayhem and the SR1 drop point at some point.

I love my Ultimate Hunter, especially since I did a choil mod on it. My AD10 is pretty damn awesome as well. I don't have a 4max, but thinking of getting a scout. I'd love to get a 5max and the Mayhem, but not sure I want to spend that much money for a knife I wouldn't carry. They do look like fun knives though! I bet they're a blast to fool around with out in the woods. Chopping shit up!!

Id buy a 5 max scout just for the fun of it, have an sr1 lite which is the best folder cold steel makes in terms of durability and price. Havent had the need to buy another folder since i purchased it.

Yeah, I really hope the Megalodon makes it into production at some point, but as far as I know, there are only 3 in existence at the moment and they are all customs.

This is a very good comparison. They are essentially the same (or very similar) all drop point knives. I’ll go for the 5 MAX. I wish they include a “metal butt” in the handles similar to the AK-47 which I own.

I have Coldsteel in both s35vn and aus10a and I think the aus10a is the idea steel for ease of sharpening. I dont see a big difference between the two steels as far as edge retention. After using my knives I always touchup the edge with ceramic cross sticks. I like the 5max but I'm waiting for the 5max scout in aus10a. I'm confident there's going to be a 6max in the future. You don't know you have enough knife until you have too much. I think that's going to be the driving force for a 6max. I see they left out the hole in the handle so the blade can't be pinned as on the 4max and the AD10. The AD10 in drop point is my favorite, however I always carry a Swiss army also in case I need a utility blade like a screwdriver or bottle opener.

Love the idea of the 5max. I personally would have loved it more if they made it beefier. Thicker blade stock and bigger stop pins and hardware. I decided to give the Mayhem a try instead

I love the 5 Max, I just wish that they would have made the handle a little thicker because I brought it out in the woods to do some testing and the skinnier scales weren’t too comfortable and they didn’t handle shock that well either but it does make it easier to carry the knife. Also if they would have went with Cpm- 3v steel that would have just made it even more of a beast 👍🍻🍻

Obviously the 5MAX is OTT and I'm fine with that, I own and occasionally use an Italian made 4MAX but it was abit of a disappointment as the fit and finish is quite poor and what annoyed me most was that before it I owned two US made ones and the first was just bad, it had all the problems that any Cold Steel collector will already have heard about, so I gave it to my brother and he tinkered with it and made it halfway to decent, and then I bought another, they refer to them as different " Generations " and there was a fair old time between the purchases and it was slightly better but it still had fit and finish issues and so I sold that one on and eventually ended up getting the Italian made one I previously mentioned and I would say even with its poor fit and finish it seems to be the best out of the three I've had, BUT what really got me was that I bought a pre GSM S35VN 4MAX and it was incredibly well made, the quality of it is so much better that the others and I was blown away by that but also disappointed as it's not made here in the states, and it would've been fantastic if it was but I have absolutely nothing against Taiwan, I know that the Taichung knife makers make exceptionally well made knives, well at least when the knives are made in the best factories just as the Taichung made Spyderco models are extremely well made, so anyways I use the Taichung 4MAX regularly because it's basically an insanely overbuilt knife but one that is still actually very usable and pleasant to handle. What really gets me about the 5MAX, and I'm sure this will have crossed your mind, is WHY did GSM CS choose to use a smaller stop pin of a much larger knife?! It makes absolutely no sense AT ALL, and if anything you would think that it would be bigger than the 4MAX just to keep it to scale, and the pivot screw I believe is slightly smaller in diameter than the 4MAX pivot screw, although it may only be the head that is smaller, but still you would expect that to have been possibly made a bit thicker too? I haven't bought a 5MAX because of these aspects and your video is very well made and it displays these oddities/inconsistencies between the different designs very well too. I like the 5MAX but engineering wise it makes no sense to have the reduced the stop pin in size and having a bigger pivot bolt would've made a good deal of sense too. Honestly I'm not even sure what Cold Steel was thinking. I'ts waaaay too big for me, if I use something that big it'd be a fixed blade. Even the 4Max is really too big for me but it's such a good deal I put an Aus10 version in one of my bug-out roll kits. Although if for some reason I decide I have to have this (cause you know, it's a knife....), I'll have to wait for the Aus10 version. That much V35 steel puts the knife well out of my price range. Or at least out of my price range for a knife I can't carry.

I have the 4Maxx with CPM20CV, great knife ! Now I must get the 5 Maxx and Mayhem. Something about high quality massive folders makes me happy. BTW, my most used knife is an old Case Hawk Bill, it opens packages like a dream. Well, I am 60 years of age and will be leaving a crazy collection of knives to my wife and daughters, but they already know I am slightly nuts. I would donate them to boy Scouts, but not now that they are "woke". Oh well.
