Arnold's 2023. Tom stoltman (my #1 favorite strongman by miles) only won the atlas stones in the wsm 2022, still won the show by a near record margin.... Everyone knows that what has made Mitchell such a phenom, is his consistency/lack of weakness. This isn't controversial.
@AmandaMolly2 ай бұрын
100% agree , but in the same breath I think everyone forgets that all these men who competed in the strongest man on earth have different height's compared to others. Yes each of them are tall in their own right. I agree with many others to have set up the squat machine with the barrels on top when they got set up before the event just so Brian could have re-configured it and saw that it wasn't doable but also these guys have lots so much of there energy in events prior. I wish Brian Shaw would space out the events, like say do two in the morning, then let them rest and then do two in the afternoon so the boys can save energy and eat. Then in between those events do the shaw classic events somehow or have 3 days just for the shaw classic then add the two day event split up the 4 events each day for strongest man on earth so Brian and his team can not be so busy setting up events so they can only focus on one event set up at a time. This was my first time watching both events and I felt bad for the guys for getting too tired to not complete some of the events.

Mitch, consistency is key and you are the most consistent athlete out there, it doesn’t matter one bit if you come second on every event , as long as it’s not the same person coming first of course!! its’s an accumulation of points and whoever has the most wins, its a simple concept, so I struggle to see the issue. If you get the down call it’s a clean lift that’s on the referees not you. Reading the rules and using them correctly is what I’ve always said about you is you have the brains to match the strength. Tom Stoltman did it at WSM, he was top 3 in every event, bar the conans wheel but he knew what he had to do to keep ahead of you. You placed 6th in the first event, no matter how hard you tried you were reliant on Tom having a poor event, most likely the conans wheel and he didn’t and won the show. You don’t make the podium 18 times in a row for nothing. You are a top athlete and one of the best strongmen in the world. Tom and Thor being the other 2. You were a class above everyone else at the Shaw classic, yes Thor won 5 events but the other 3 he came between 6th & 8th. That’s why he didn’t win. You won 2 events but finished in the top 3 in every other event bar the dumbbell press and Thor didn’t do any better. Keep doing what you’re doing. I’m a Stoltman fan before anyone suggests otherwise but credit where credit is due and you deserve every title you have won
@princelewd30192 ай бұрын
Aside reading the rules, your job is to focus on the head judge and ask questions during the rules meeting. As an amateur strongman, I've had my fair share of dodgy calls. For 1 event, i didn't lock out, BUT had control, and my head ref gave me the down command, so I put my log down. Others fought it in my weight bracket, but due to head judge giving me the down, I got the final rep.

100% agreed on the scoring „controversy“. There‘s nothing wrong with the scoring mechanism in Strongman. Strongman has always been about finding the strongest man OVERALL. If you finish second in every event, but win the show that means that you’ve beat the guys that may have won one event in other events by a bigger margin. Therefore, you’re the strongest. I thought the Football/Basketball example was on point. You don’t get extra points for winning a half or quarter. Only the final score matters

I just think there are a lot of people who are newer to the sport that just don't know about or remember some of the questionable calls in earlier competitions. The Douglas Edmund days of WSM, especially on overhead pressing events were always pretty hit or miss. See Jamie Reeves, Garrett Badenhorst and Flemming Rasmussen. The squat... Machines are always a little janky depending on the size of the athletes, it could favor one or like in this case, technique can vary without necessarily breaking any rules. Others might get totally screwed. I remember seeing squat racks that shifted for some athletes and totally screwed them in their performance. False Starts... I mean, they are going to see it and they are going to adjust for it if they don't outright discount it. All and all, I don't really consider any of these to be a controversy, but granted things are getting a lot more strict and audiences are a lot more critical these days than they have been in times past.

The only controversy is your opponents have to get better to beat you , the only gripe I've ever had is event wins should be scored differently. There will always be arguments over dodgy refing in every sport.

No one seems to talk about how IMO the most controversial parts of the SMOE squat, was that 10 of 16 athletes zeroed the event. It looks very wierd to see 10 guys with 0 points on an event.

not weird, considering that Thor did more reps with more weight in a free bar and he could only do 3 reps because he just didn't set his feet correctly and coulndn't approach it like Mitch did. If because of that Thor only managed 3 reps I'm not surprised that the other guys who didn't get their feet position right zeroed

It really was weird , there are side by side comparisons of Mitch to some of the other guys....the other guys were at 90 degrees, hitting depth. Mitch was only at 45 degrees maybe a hair lower. But not even close to the same depth. And don't bring up that the machine wouldn't go lower, the bar wasn't even as low in the side by sides. He cheated plain and simple.

@@eladrio2311 Regardless of anything you say, 10 guys getting 0 points on an event looks wierd on the results. events should at least look liftable by around half the athletes competing.

@@EdFluke-cd5xxI agree for the most part but I wouldn’t say Mitch cheated (and I’m not a huge Mitch fan, I don’t dislike him either, just not a fan) but to your point he intentionally approached it as a non squat event and only planned to move the bar from squat to finish (which I understand the thought process) but it’s not in the spirit of lifting that we all love. He knows it was meant to be a squat event but he read between the lines for an advantage. Not cheating but in my opinion not the best mindset either.
