Glad you found the video informative! Unfortunately the misinformation about poly is already so cemented now that people are going to continue promoting it and selling highly priced poly compounds

Yeah it's full of them! But it's incredibly hard to find solid information to debunk most of it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Gunny Juice (which is Poly) but for those of you who say it’s the best…we’ll just watch this video. THE SCIENTIFIC DATA DOES NOT LIE!!! Data, data, data, you can never go wrong with it when presenting an argument or comparison. So few folks understand that and just believe in opinions or baseless statements.

Picked up Gunny Juice in 3 and 6 micron at Blade Show 2022 (June 4) Had great results on nano cloth and bass wood. Diamond stropping should reduce my need to sharpen by 75% or so. This will be a big time and money saver... Thanks for the video.

Yeah diamond compounds can be very fast, great for a quick refresh of an edge

Mr Gunny told me that the reason poly is superior in this application is because of poly particles being rounder so they roll around more and better aligns themselves with the scratch pattern and microserratations in the edge, as well as cutting better due to poly particles having more facets. Been trying to find a source to confirm this but havent managed to so far. My experience so far has been that good quality compound with high concentration of diamonds in it is far superior to cheap ones where theres nowhere near as much diamond nor consistancy in particle size, but I havent found poly to perform better than mono. Interesting topic though, I genuinly wonder if there is anything to it when the fracturing element is taken out of the equation

Legendary Video. Clear, concise, and well reasoned conclusions 🙏 A questionable comment, and a question: 🟡Comment: As you explained, it is unlikely there is a massive difference in terms of particle size / fracturing between poly & mono diamonds at these sizes and application (stropping with small particle sizes) --- *However*; there could potentially be an advantage to poly diamonds at these sizes in-so-far as, for a given size, they will have more abrasive points/corners than their mono counterparts... That is just my understanding, however, perhaps when at sub 4 micron particle sizes, the amount of "abrasive points" on the particle evens out between the two? 🟠Question: At significantly coarser & larger micron sizes (lets say 45), *when fused to a metal plate or in a bonded bench-stone*: would the difference between mono and poly be more severe? One can imagine that with poly, there is a potential for the diamonds to quickly splinter to an effectively smaller grit size - causing the diamond plate or stone in question to act much finer than its stated grit... (however, that is only IF sufficient pressures to do so are reached via hand grinding. Grinding a microbevel would significantly lower the contact point, and subsequently greatly increase the PSI load on the diamond particles.... so it seems possible) ----- On the other hand, one could imagine a scenario where the same plates or stones with mono diamonds would wear smooth over time, as at those coarser particle sizes, they do in fact have fewer "abrasive points" than their poly counterparts. Based on your understanding of these topics, Any thoughts on which type of diamond particle would be best to use on coarser diamond plate / stone that has a hard backing? (By "best" I mean, cutting steel quickly & efficiently, while remaining useable for a long time at the expected grit rating without excessive wear) Either way, awesome video and thanks for adding this to the (short) stack of reasonable and useful sharpening knowledge out in the public sphere

I am going to try vegetable/food safe mineral oil and Lapidary mono crystalline powder. Much cheaper. I am going to give it the ole college try. Can’t hurt for less than 5 bucks.

@@judgetoogood1033 it will work fine, but you'll have a strop covered in greasy oil which will go rancid. So the abrasion will happen, but it will be a very unenjoyable experience.

Love your videos and I’m not bored or a sharpening nerd…just a jackass who owns some pocket knives 😅 Quick question, what do you recommend from your site? I have a Wicked Edge sharpening system but, I don’t always take it out to just strop (lazy, I know) I would use it for my wife’s kitchen knives and also my humble collection. Thanks in advance 🙏 Forgot to mention that I have a buffalo skin strip and haven’t used any compound on it and haven’t really noticed a notable difference after using it, could you recommend a compound for it as well?

Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it and it encourages me to make more videos. I'm glad you enjoyed this one. First off, bare leather is almost completely non abrasive due to the low amount of natural silicates and doesn't really do much to the apex when stropping on unloaded leather. Todd over at Science of Sharp has lots of great information on this, he performed HUNDREDS of laps on bare leather on a straight razor (super thin) and took images, it achieved almost nothing. scienceofsharp.com/2014/08/13/what-does-stropping-do/ In my opinion it's not worth stropping on bare leather, it's a waste of time unless someone has a specific process they're following and it works for them for whatever reason. If you were to get something from me, I'd suggest the 0.5um compound. It's a great for all round use depending on how you use it and perfect for someone new to diamond compounds. It's slower than the 1um (obviously) so you're less likely to "over strop". I do really like my strops too (bias) but I make them all myself in small batches and they get snapped up fast and I don't have a lot of time to make them. If you're in the US you can order my compounds from Gritomatic and if you're in the EU you can get them from a couple other places more locally too. There is a link on my website under "where to buy?" Let me know if you have anymore questions and good luck!
