Visualization of how a stereonet (Schmidt, equal-area net) relates to the corresponding lower hemisphere, how a plane relates to its pole, and how planes and poles are represented in a stereonet, using a physical model (clear acrylic hemisphere).
This video employs what I refer to as the “American right-arm rule” for strike and dip of planes; looking to the strike direction, the plane dips in the direction of the observer’s right arm. This is very different from the traditional “British right-hand rule”.
This video was produced during the fall of 2020, at the heart of COVID, as part of my effort to teach structural geology online.

Are you asking about the origin of stereonets? As I understand it, Schmidt (1925) initially used the Schmidt net for analysis of rock fabric. The Schmidt net is used to produce Lambert's equal-area projections (Lambert, 1772). The Wulff net, commonly used in crystallography, is an equal-angle net and gets its name from a Russian crystallographer.
